Support i8k packages -- gkrellm-i8k and i8kutils

Software submitted by cps42 05/07/07

The drivers and monitoring for Inspiron and Lattitude laptops provided by the i8k packages have been a default install for me for several years. The additional benefits (like being able to turn off the fans when I really need it quiet) is fantastic. Additional features, like reading the support asset tag from the Bios makes calling support much easier.

A huge thanks to the developers and maintainers that keep the i8k packages alive!

Description: utilities for Dell Inspiron and Latitude laptops
This is a collection of utilities to control Dell Inspiron and Latitude
laptops. It includes programs to turn the fan on and off, to read fan
status, CPU temperature, BIOS version and to handle the volume buttons
and Fn-keys.
.
The package includes also a small Tk applet, designed to be swallowed in the gnome panel, which monitors the CPU temperature and controls automatically the fans accordingly to user defined thresholds.
.
The programs require the kernel module i8k.o which can be compiled from
the package sources or found in Linux kernel 2.4.14 and later versions.
The kernel module has been tested only on Inspiron 8000 laptops but it
should work on any Inspiron and Latitude laptops.

Release the Axim hardware specifications

Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support submitted by jtzapp 05/09/07 **REVIEWED**

Now that Dell has gotten out of the handheld market, why not release the specifications for the chips et al, for the Axims? I would love to be able to run linux on my Axim X50v, and I'm sure I'm not the only one -- but that's not really going to happen unless developers can tailor the kernel to the hardware. Michael Dell and the rest of the company have recently made a public promise to further linux on Dell hardware, and this would go a long way towards engendering brand loyalty. I don't see how this can harm Dell in any way, and as I said, would certainly help to assure me that Dell doesn't want to leave its customers out in the cold even if they no longer sell the product. We're not asking for any sort of support whatsoever, just the ability to exercise our freedoms with respect to the products we purchase.

Actually promote Desktop Linux

Advertising and Marketing, Desktops, Linux submitted by mrvertigo 05/10/07

Dell offered desktop Linux once but seemingly did not market it as much as it could have, the company did not make money on a Linux desktop and decided to stop offering it, this is one reason that dell needs to effectively market its newest offertings
as a desktop alternative!!!

Without a REAL attempt to market this it will die like attempts by so many others, Dell has the resources to market this!

Lets get desktop lnux out there guys! 4 Comments »

can dell become as a new "apple" with linux

Linux submitted by davidene 05/10/07

it will be interesting an accord of dell with novel redhat or ubuntu to develope a linux OS only for dell pc... I like very much idea of dell to implement linux on its devices, but it is a little difficult to use linux for novice users... overall to install new software... it is not easy to find the right software for your specific distribution... it will be a good idea also that dell give this software on its site...or as i told to produce a linux for dell pc that uses an apart installation packet as rpm or exe or... i don't know...it will semplificates the consumers life...

always new and user friendly software is power

Help us get rid of MS

Operating Systems submitted by velegno 05/10/07

.

Dell should make a survey asking to the young people if they want to get rid Windows of their PC.

I'm sure the most of us hates this OS. But for exaple I SHOULD use it because there are many software that only works here. But I suffer every day and I know that there are better options. And I feel that Dell and other companies don't care about the user, just about their business. If I could use another OS I will do it for SURE.

My proposal: Make a survey.

Why Vista

Operating Systems submitted by venya1 05/11/07

Do not re-invent the wheel.

XP works fine....

Vista requires to much system power...

Billions of dollars to develop a better car that
requires an engine twice as big!

Hardly a breakthrough in technology...

More ram 1024mb needed (recommended)
Needs better cpu (core 2 duo)
Recommend a graphics card. (o/s heavy on system graphics)

Its a nonsense.....

What do you use your pc for?

1) Internet - Ebay / News
2) Printing Photos.
3) Emails

Happy with XP ;-)

Oh! ...Dells rock - [profanity removed by moderator] good hardware!

Buy a Dell Today;-)

Thanks for your time folks...
