BIOS download option either in ISO format or CDROM building utility

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by lawson23 Jun 17

Now with the advent of the disappearing floppy users need an option to load the BIOS from the CD-ROM drive.

I understand I could do 20 steps and to achieve this myself but I should not have to do this. Bootable floppies are a thing of the past. It is time for Dell to realize this.

Also this not only applies to Bios but any firmware files for a piece of hardware. 18 Comments »

Don't charge up to $50 more to downgrade from Vista to XP

Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jun 17

Dell is going to start charging customers up to $50 to downgrade thier systems operating system from Vista to XP after Wednesday. While some people see XP as an upgrade, I don't think there should be a charge for it. 17 Comments »

Open Source Hardware

Dell submitted by simon_n Jun 18

There was an interesting article in The Economist magazine's technology quarterly out last week about hardware vendors publishing their hardware specs on-line for people to see and collaborate on:

Wouldn't you like to see Dell put their weight behind it too? Comment »

Update UPEK application and driver

Service and Support submitted by programatix Jun 18

UPEK has already updated its TouchChip driver at http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp. I tried downloading the driver and it works properly with my XPS M1530.

It also upgraded the Fingerprint Reader Suite Software to Protector Suite QL at http://www.upek.com/support/customersupport/psql.asp. If you go to this page, you'll see that all major laptop manufacturers have already upgrade the software except Dell.

The question is, why is this so? Comment »

Create the "napkin PC"

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jun 18

"The Napkin PC aims to bring out the creative passion of the user both individually and in group sessions. It encourages spreading out and allows for multiple creative workflows that can interact or just as easily stay independent. It encourages group interaction and collaboration by allowing any number of interfaces that can be passed around or pinned up, but which all communicate with a central network."

Adaptable Shaped Laptop

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by simon_n Jun 19

In the spirit of the previous idea about the napkin PC there is also a need for personal computers that adapt to the different environments that you use them:
From home/office to bus/train etc.

To this end a couple of things would be useful:
1) A computer that becomes like an eBook when you want (i.e. without big keyboard and comfortable to read from for long periods.
2) A screen that changes size. This could be done using a simple sliding mechanism to show/hide the extra screen area as necessary 14 Comments »

Provide settings map between monitor models to match a monitor being replaced

Monitors and Displays submitted by phubert Jun 19

I just had to replace a failed Dell 2000FP with a Dell 2001FP and can't get the colors/brightness/contrast matched on a Precision Workstation 370 with an nVidia Quadro FX 1400.

I don't know that the system/video card are the issue as the on-screen monitor menus are also of little help.

Matching the red-green-blue values from the 2000FP to the 2001FP doesn't seem to work (white doesn't look white).

My point, however, isn't just these two monitors... I've seen the problem any time one monitor model is replaced with another.

And, right NOW I'm getting a headache using the replacement monitor!!! 15 Comments »

Keyboard light

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ccpljat Jun 19

keyboard light

Dell should make something similar to this light. It is located at the top of the screen and shines down on the keyboard to illuminate it at night. It is activated by a function key combination. 14 Comments »

Offer IdeaStormers To R&D Their Own Ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by simon_n Jun 19

IdeaStorm is a fertile breeding ground for ideas that helps foster valuable creativity.
The problem is that lots of the good ideas and the people suggesting them seem to get forgotten about because Dell hasn't got a team for dealing with them.

Dell could offer IdeaStormers the opportunity to research and develop the most popular ideas. 2 Comments »

Discounts, Credit, or Cash for Recycling Old Laptops and Computers

Sales Strategies submitted by wendaline Jun 19

I think Dell should offer customers either a discount, credit, or cash back for recycling their old computers. Both HP and Toshiba do this, so, why not Dell? If they did this it would help the enviroment while gaining loyal customers or keeping already loyal customers from going to their competetors AND they could refurbish the old parts and start selling refurbished computers at lower prices for those of us who can't afford to spend a fortune on a new computer. Come on Dell execs listen to your consumers, the ones who pay your salery, and keep us as your customers. Do you really want the other companies to win? Comment »

A Better design for the XPS M1730

XPS products submitted by junior Jun 19

Dell, you have to make a better design for the next 17" XPS Notebook. It pretty much looks like the Inspiron 1720, but thicker and different color in my opinion. If you look closely to the 1720, you'll see it pretty much has the same edges, curves and display. Make the next XPS 17" soon with the latest technologies, better designs, and call it the XPS M1740, but with a backlit keyboard as well. 2 Comments »

Proximity sensor for keyboard backlight activation on XPS laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by tovare Jun 19

One of my consens with keyboard backlight is that it would light up the PC too much in the dark for instance when watching a DVD. Varius timeout modes from last keyboard activity is clumsy, because then you need to say hit one of the arrow-keys (although it would have been fun to see a keyboard once with an actual ANYKEY).

So here is my idea:

It would be cool in a sci-fi sort of way if you could add an infrared proximity-sensor which activated the backlight, so that when your finger approached the keyboard the keys would light up when in the dark.

Now, bring out your laptop, turn off the light....and visualize it. Cool huh? 2 Comments »

Integrated GPS

Laptops submitted by pablohs Jun 2

I can buy a mobile phone with integrated GPS but not a laptop? I would like to be able to buy a laptop with the GPS already integrated within the unit. I am talking integrated, NO a third party card + cables + antenna option. 3 Comments »

Dell E configuration that competes head to head with HP Mininote and EEE 1000

Inspiron products submitted by midconsumer Jun 17

Dell E current information indicates no configuration with a hard drive that supports Windows XP and Office applications. HP Mininote offers 2GB ram, 120 or 160 GB hard drive and a custom XP installation. The Dell E seems targeted to the EEE surf rather than the EEE 1000. Please offer a business configuration of your smaller form factor. Dell quality is proven to me every day at work. I prefer Dell over its competitors. 2 Comments »

Stop over pricing computer items. Now in these days everything is being on the internet, from paying bills to school for kids and to working. So stop making things so high priced so people can afford to get what they need. 1 Comment »

Make the "recent ideas" the default page

IdeaStorm submitted by ccpljat Jun 7

I think this is what most people are interested in looking at. The popular ideas page doesn't change too much. But new ideas are constantly showing up. I for one go there first. 1 Comment »
