Laptop keyboards are a thing of the past!

With all of the developments in touch screen technology (and tactile feedback) and with the new OLPC on the horizon, why do we still have laptops with separate screens and keyboards? Dual touchscreens would make laptops more versatile and more fun to use! It might take a little getting used to, but I'm sure we'll manage.

Offer a easy to print out PDF of your invoice
Service and Support submitted by ro_bro

Right now, getting an invoice from dell when purchasing a desktop in my case is a mess. It's misaligned, and simply looks ugly.
Also, if I want to get an invoice, I have to go through this hoop of filling out information again (which makes no sense, since I have the order ID anyways, AND I'm logged in).
I propose that you provide an easy to read PDF file as an invoice after a purchase from Dell. That would make our lives easier as the consumer to just save that out as a receipt or to even print it out and file it. Right now, it's really ugly and looks unprofessional.
I've never seen a more convoluted order summary and invoice email than from Dell.

Put more staff on the Ideastorm team!

I seriously cannot believe that 3 people is a sufficient amount of admins to manage 450+ pages of ideas. This is really evidenced by the fact that a _ton_ of ideas have gone ignored by the Ideastorm team, even when they were very popular.

I can buy a mobile phone with integrated GPS but not a laptop? I would like to be able to buy a laptop with the GPS already integrated within the unit. I am talking integrated, NO a third party card + cables + antenna option.

Become a Linux leader, make Windows the option
Linux submitted by jonsmirl
Jun 2
Install Ubuntu on every box Dell ships. Make Windows into the option.
This would require some real courage but long run it could increase revenue. Lowering the cost of computing always expands the size of the market.
As more people pick Linux only the budget used for Windows/Office would be freed. Some of that could come back as purchases of other Dell items. The cost differential is especially obvious on sub $300 systems. Who can afford to send Microsoft $150 in license fees on a $300 system?
Note , this is different than add Linux as an OS choice or make special Linux boxes.

OSX like Lunix bsaed OS

Windows Vista has been the greatest thing that has ever happened to Apple. The Apple OS is sleek and actually quite robust for what it is, and what is it but a BSD shell with a GUI and a few copyrighted mods. Apple is first and formost a hardware company. As a whole the population in general hates Microsoft, so why not take the Apple IS and use it as non- microsoft alternative. There is a whole underground community doing it already, so why not get together with Apple and work it out. It works great, and If I can hack it and make it work on my laptop that now quad boots with XP, Vista, OSX, and redhat, a couple of multi billion dollar companies should be more than capable.

I think Dell would do great to have a Notebook/laptop similar to Apple's Macbook Air. Ultra thin and super sleek. Come on Dell, let's see it!!! Make it as thin as the Macbook!!

Stop Selling DELL Laptops at Best Buy
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by gear
Jun 3
DELL Laptops sold at Best Buy DO NOT HAVE WARRANTY SUPPORT OUTSIDE OF USA.
This dirty little secret is kept hidden from Consumers, who never get to see the warranty until after they take the system home.
Unless you are prepared to wade through the warranty before or after purchase, the first tine you find out that there is no service and support is when something breaks abroad.
I spent 3 weeks fighting with various DELL support agents, complaining on this site and it resulted in NADA action.
Dell basically do not care if their brand is sullied and damaged by selling their laptops at retail at Best Buy with sub-standard warranties.
Other manufacturers, like HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, will generally service their retail laptops anywhere in the world at an authorized service depot.

Wireless and Bluetooth Hotkey

I saw it in a asus laptop (I'm not sure).
When you press the bluetooth and wifi hotkey, it changes the configuration:
Wireless and bluetooth off
Wireless off bluetooth on
Wireless on bluetooth on
Wireless on bluetooth off
It's very interesting since in my inspiron (for example) there is only one hotkey for this.
Or make available one hotkey for wifi and another for bluetooth

Make dell computers have less popups. I have a Dimension and it has a lot of pop ups. This is very annoying. The computer would function much more easily with less popups.

Music player On laptop
Software, Laptops submitted by kailer

i was thinking of plugging a in bedded mp3 player in it,maybe 1gb or 2 gb flash memory (better if more can be place in it) the power to run the music player will run from it own recharge battery instead of the laptop battery because it might spoil the battery.... It will be great if the player can be removed but if the player is lost , it will be ugly for the laptop... and for music lover laptop battery will sure last as the battery can be recharge tgt with the laptopbattery( ipod are like this) and i wanted to implement this using flash disk because i understand that pro long moving of hard disk will damage it so i used a flash disk instead of the harddisk
dell can make it own remote control for the music player ,something like other songs remote. forward and backward and changing of songs
the flash drive that the mp3 use might be bigger as you can store your backup inside too incase anythings goes wrong with ur hard disk

Notify Customer BEFORE Cancelling Orders

When Dell decides that they aren't interested in filling a customer's confirmed order it would be nice if Dell would bother notifying the customer (preferably before cancelling the order, but certainly at least immediately afterward).

Some Suggestions for Your TERRIBLE WEBSITE
Dell Web Site submitted by jaws4096
Jun 7
Stop forcing users to start their build over and over, checking to see which product line magically gives them the options they want. Increase the flexibility and visibility of build options between model lines.
This is a general customer service comment about your website. My girlfriend is buying a laptop. After fiddling with your site for an hour, she asked for my help choosing a model. She said the website was extremely confusing. I assumed it was because Dell offers custom laptops, and she wasn’t sure which options she needed. But when we logged on together, it became clear that the website is complicated because you’ve attempted to dumb it down too much. You ask users to classify themselves according to home, small business, large business, or government. But most users don’t classify themselves this way. And it’s apparent that you are hiding models from users, based on that initial choice. Your model numbers are confusing, and depending on options, a “lower” model can easily cost twice as much as the next model “up” in your line.
Go to www.mcmaster.com and search for “tubing”. Notice how users can select specifications that they know, which narrows their search, but can leave out options they aren’t sure about? For laptops, I might want to narrow my search by case style, base price, type of processor, or any number of things. Perhaps it would be more helpful for your initial question to be, “Would you like to build a custom laptop by choosing technical features like memory, hard drive space, and processor speed – or would you like to describe how the laptop will be used, and we’ll try to recommend some features for you?” Then, instead of asking me if my PC is for home, small business, large business, or government / research use, why not ask me what I’m going to do with the bloody thing? Will I use it to run Microsoft Office applications like Word and Outlook? Will I be connecting to a wireless network at my home? At my office? Will I be playing 3D games? Will I be editing home photos? Editing photos for professional use? Watching movies? How long do I need the battery to last? Will I be working with large spreadsheets in Excel? Editing video? These questions tell you much more about what kind of features I need than your arbitrary and confusing questions about what “type” of user I am.
After a set of features is determined, show them to me in spreadsheet format, on one page. List each feature, like the amount of memory included, in the left column. Give a brief description like, “Memory is temporary storage used by your computer to run programs. For most people, 2 GB of 533MHz DDR2 memory is adequate. If you will be playing 3D games, editing photos professionally, or using large spreadsheets, 4GB is better, and you may want to consider faster (higher MHz) memory.” The, to the right, show me the current memory type, and the amount of memory, I’ve chosen. Next to the type, place an up arrow and a down arrow. The up arrow says, “Upgrade to 667MHz DDR memory” and lists an additional price. The down arrow says, “Downgrade to DDR memory,” and lists a credit amount. Similarly, up and down arrows next to the amount of memory give me options for increasing or decreasing the amount of RAM, and given an increase or decrease in price. For optional features, like software, give me a checkbox to indicate if I want it at all.
Anyway, this is my just-thought-of-it interface, and I’m sure you can improve the general idea. But you must do something better than the current system, which leaves buyers wondering if there is a model hidden on some other model line that would allow them to choose only the features they want, at a cheaper price. Your current website is a big, confusing guessing game, and I find myself going back and forth between pages, starting over several times, to get a configuration I like. Look at the web visit histories of your users and I’m sure you’ll find their behavior indicates a similar confusion.

Dell should buy AMD.
Dell submitted by drewness

Dell Should buy AMD and offer AMD chips on most systems. Limit Intel offerings or eliminate them entirely. I just read today that the FTC opened a formal investigation into Intel sales tactics. We know how it works- Microsoft and Intel threaten the PC makers with loss of discounts if they don't play by Microsoft & Intel rules. Very uncool bullying tactics!
