New Inspiron Mini Design

Inspiron products submitted by brokencrystal Yesterday

I know it's too late for the first generation of the Mini Inspiron, but this idea is for the second generation.

Instead of having the mini look like this:

Could we please have the upcoming mini look like this:

The XPS and Studio notebooks look so much nicer than the leaked photos of the Inspiron Mini, so why not make the next version of the mini look like the XPS or Studio, just much smaller? Maybe you could make a higher end mini notebook called the XPS Mini or the Studio Mini for those of us who have to have top of the line in a small package? 9 Comments »

Incorporate SATA 3.0 into Dell products

Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Yesterday

"A new specification for the popular Serial ATA storage interface will double the maximum transfer speed from three to six gigabits per second (Gb/s). This will enable large amounts of data to be moved at even faster rates, a key advantage as end-users amass ever-increasing amounts of high-resolution photos, videos, music and other multimedia files.

Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO), the consortium dedicated to sustaining the quality, integrity and dissemination of SATA technology, today released to its members the physical layer (PHY) portion for its third generation storage interface, which will be defined in the upcoming SATA Revision 3.0 specification. Today’s release ushers in a new generation of faster SATA 6Gb/s products. Developers can now begin designing products based on SATA 6Gb/s technology as work continues on the SATA Revision 3.0 specification, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2008. "

Studio Hybrid Desktop with Better Graphics

Desktops, Gaming submitted by jasondunn Yesterday

I ordered the Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop the first day it was announced, and I put up a video on YouTube about it the day I received it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_6ZOVjhw8Y

The #1 request that people had? Better graphics. Not mind-blowing desktop-level graphics, but something that you'd see on a gaming-oriented laptop. Maybe even SLI if it's possible to fit it in there. Sure, it would use more power when playing games, but if Dell chose ATI's GPU solution they'd have the ability to switch between an integrated and discreet solution as the user needs.

I didn't purchase this for games - I purchased it to a be Media Center PC to connect to plasma TV, and sadly it has trouble with that as well. The Intel X3100 GPU is a very poor performer, and browsing from menu to menu in Vista's Media Center, it's painfully obvious that the X3100 just can't keep up.

The Studio Hybrid Desktop is a great computer, and coming from a company like Dell it's quite innovative, but the decision to use an Intel X3100 graphics solution was a very poor one. 10 Comments »

Have more respect for your Inspiron Mini customers!

Advertising and Marketing submitted by mostlyharmless22 2 days ago

I have been going back and looking at blogs/forums from May and June, trying to determine whether the Inspiron Mini is "vaporware" or an actual planned product. I found instances where Dell made specific comments about their "upcoming netbook," acknowledged information released on Engadget, and even commented that it was likely that Engadget was where the next tidbit of information would be found.

Now that everyone is all stirred up and waiting for the official release, we get total silence from Dell. Not "there are delays but be patient" -- total silence. Even if you're not ready to release specs yet, you could have mentioned it at your press conference. Your failure to do so shows a complete lack of understanding or respect for your customers. People, including me, are angry and many are defecting to buy other mini notebooks.

Learn something about marketing strategy and respect for your customers! 20 Comments »

Stop adding DELL Customized Software

Service and Support, Software submitted by sirebral Aug 12

Dell Tech support spent a good long time (a couple hours I think) with me as we tried to find certain features of the DELL installed material.

ALL IS LOST???

Either stop spending work hours to customize my experience or provide those customized additions on backup CDs.

I had to download the Dell Dock, which no longer contained the Studio Hybrid specific icons, and I also lost a nice collection of wallpapers.

I paid for those, why can't I have them back? 1 Comment »

Seperate BlueTooth Switch from Wi-Fi Switch

Broadband and Mobility, Laptop Power submitted by kknd1015 Aug 13

it can save more power if i can control bluetooth and wi-fi saperately, so that the bettary can last more time.
and as far as i know, wi-fi and bluetooth are both use 2.4GHz frequency, so it is better if we can turn off one of them when uer another, or we can avoid the interference. 6 Comments »

Specify the real name of the WifF components not the Dell name

Broadband and Mobility, Linux, Laptops submitted by bjrosen Aug 13

The wireless chip in the Studio 15 listed as a Dell 1397, that doesn't tell me anything. Dell doesn't make wireless chips.

I want Intel wireless in my next laptop so that I'm absolutely sure that it's Linux compatible. Just because you have a component in your Ubuntu laptops doesn't guarantee that it has native Linux support, you could have used Ndiswrapper + a WIndows driver which is not an acceptable solution.

Please don't obscure the components that you use. 4 Comments »

Studio Hybrid that can play games

Desktops submitted by bostich Aug 14

Would it be possible to squeeze a mobile graphics card of some kind as an option on the Studio Hybrids? Just about the only thing holding me back is the poor-avreage gaming performance of the X3100.

Even if it limited some of my other options that would be worth it. 12 Comments »

1680x1050 LED Backlit screens for XPS 1530

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by middlep1 Jul 30

Isn't about time Dell started to filter more LED backlit screens into the mainstream, I've grown accustomed to using 1680x1050 15.4" laptop screens over of having 2 Dell and 1 Asus laptops with that resolution, 1920X1200 on a 15.4" is just silly, 1680X1050 is just perfect for my web design and development usage, and LED backlights would be perfect as well, I'd even go as far as paying a extra (modest) premium for the privilage. Always prefer DEDICATED Graphics Card Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by it-professional Jul 30

If you are buying new laptop for Home or Office I suggest you to buy laptop with dedicated graphics card so that you can run Windows Vista smoothly as well as you can do Graphics work as well as playing games too... If you buy Inspirion 1525 please request for dedicated graphics card 1st...
LAPTOP without Dedicated Graphics card is worthless and meaningless if you want to use it for Study or Project work... as well as also I recommended for 15.4" rather than 14" or 17"
Thanks...All the Best

Back-lit Logo on Lid - Make as an option

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by nazukeoya Jul 30

Like Apple and Alienware, make the Dell logo back-lit as an option on laptop lids.

In addition, add the option to attach your own created logo to your order to make as a back-lit logo on the lid of your laptop.

It would add a charge to the order price but WELL WORTH IT.

This would be so rad...especially the option to customize the logo you have on the lid. too too cool. Comment »

keep up with new technology

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products, Laptops submitted by aldeal Aug 5 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

this site always comes up with errors nonetheless heres my direct question to Michael Dell..Why is it youre not keeping up with latest technologies hardwares? e.g HDMI ports (i see bluray has been implemented now) at least on a dell laptop, preferably latitude would be nice also latitude D6xx serries there should be a 15" screen version which is compact in dimensions i.e 13" x10.7"x 1"(or less) i see the D8xx series 15.4" but thats very unattractive keyboard position layout area in relation to top part of the laptop..anyway back to the hardware only some have built-in UMTS card facility whereas this should be available more widespread. Also only recently dell have introduced memory card slot whereas a rubbish company like fujitsu seimens had it built in since 2004. a standard MMC slot suffices as an adaptor can be purchased to adapt micro SD cards anyway- there should be at least 4 USB ports on dell laptops (last dell i had only had 2)USB ports should be designed so theres no tight squeeze. There should be USB ports on the side of machine too. More nice blue/green/status LED's :) i did have some more points like external design related e.t.c but im tired now. The only reason i like latitude range is because dual pointing capabilities. Oh yeah by the way the ac adaptors could be smaller in size

Multimedia Buttons on Studio 15 laptop should be backlit

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ddguy Aug 6

I recently got my Studio 15 which has touch sensitive mutimedia buttons at the top area. However these button are hard to make out against the black ground, specially in dark. I have a back-lit keyboard on this laptop but the backlit function doesn't do any thing to the multimedia buttons, making the operations during dark very difficult. In fact there is every chance that in dark one might by mistake Eject the CD mistaking it to be the Volume increase button...or some other mistake like that.

I would suggest that when the user back-lits the KB, the multimedia buttons should lit up too. This should be provided to existing users through a BIOS update, perhaps?

PS: You guys need a STUDIO category too !! 3 Comments »

Slot-in Drives should not accpet two DVD/CD.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ddguy Aug 6

In our new Studio 15, I got my first Slot-in DVD Drive and within 2 hrs of usage my 8 year old managed to jam the drive as the drive happily accepted one more DVD to be slotted in while one was already there. Of course, one could blame it to the kid but I see this happening to anyone as its not that tough to push the 2nd DVD in.

I have two ideas on this
1) If a DVD is already in the EJECT touch button (in the top multi-media button area) should lit up. This will serve as a visual pointer to the user and over a time users will get used to glance at this button before they try to slot in any DVD

2) If possible, there should be some kind of a simple mechanical interlock in the drive which prevents 2nd disk to be pushed in. How hard can that be to get a lever to come down and block the disk, once a disk is already in? 2 Comments »

More Updated Video Card Drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support, Laptops submitted by kalparker Aug 7

Many of your laptops have ATI or NVIDIA video card drivers, but the only source to get drivers for them is through your site. You don't upgrade them anywhere near the schedule ATI and NVIDIA do for there desktop cards. It would be nice if you updated them more often or did something so that we can use the graphics card companies own drivers. There are bugs and performance issues in drivers that are fixed over time, and we dont have an option to get them. I mean if you buy a gaming machine like the xps laptops game manufactures encourage us to update your drivers, but the ones on your site are over a year old. Please find a solution so we can update the video card drivers more often to improve performance. 10 Comments »

Add the newer laptop processors (P7350, T9400, etc.) to the list of those offered as options

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse Aug 9

One thing that needs to be done:

Dell should begin offering the newer laptop processors (including the P7350, T9400 and T9600) as soon as possible as those processors are the first laptop processors with 1066 FSBs, and along with the new Quad Core Laptop Processor (due this fall) should be in the mix. I would offer at least the T9400 in particular on ALL Inspirion and Studio laptops as well as the new Studio 9" desktop. 1 Comment »
