Support for Open Document Format

Operating Systems, Software submitted by lordshipmayhem 06/12/07

Dell should encourage support for Open Document Format:
- provide a page listing the benefits of ODF over proprietary formats (OOXML and other Microsoft "standards")
- Link to the home pages of applications that support ODF (OpenOffice.org, StarOffice, KOffice)

ODF is designed to be both platform and application agnostic: anyone who wants to write one, can create applications that allow you to use any ODF file, without losing file formatting. The objective is to allow any user to keep access to their data even if the maintainer of the application the data was saved in ends up going out of business or ending support for the application in question.

I don't know about you, but I have some files that were written in word processing software that no longer exists, in a couple of cases on platforms that don't exist outside of the hands of museums and collectors. Those files are at best extremely difficult if not utterly impossible to open now. 32 Comments »

Pre-installed wireless cards in desktops!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by cirkustanz 06/12/07

I would like to see all of the desktop models have an option for wireless networking cards to be installed by Dell. I can think of a lot of reasons why they would not, but they are reaching at best. So many other companies have been doing this, and it has long been the standard in notebooks, why not desktops? While I would agree that the PCI based networking cards might not always be the best situation for a desktop due to the excess amounts of EMI at the back, but the fact remains that for several people, it has been a VERY good solution, without taking up USB ports, and without as much risk of it accidently breaking, like the USB ones do!

I think there should be a complete section for networking in all of the desktop configurators, and PLEASE, do not forget to talk about the homeplug devices there. (aka powerline, or ethernet over power) These devices are a so great, for a lot of people! 4 Comments »

Switch to New Lithium-Sulfur batteries: Carries a longer charge, double the lifetime, Environmentally friendly, no toxic heavy metals, cheaper to produce, lighter weight

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by reg 06/10/07

Recharge Lithium-Sulfur over and over again. Sulfur is cheaper than heavy metals, and friendly to the environment. No toxic metals, and also better performing in colder temperatures. Lithium-Sulfur batteries also weigh less than Lithium Ion batteries.

More Power, Lower Costs, Safer for the environment, Easier to carry:

Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Make CD/DVD drive swappable with an extra HD

New Product Ideas submitted by biehl 06/09/07

If the CD/DVD drives uses SATA then it should be a small problem to unplug the CD/DVD drive and plug in some kind of alternative slider which contains an extra hard driver(or solid state drive) which also uses SATA.

That would rock - RAID on even really lightweight laptops! ;o) And the option to have an SSD drive as main drive, and magnetic disk HD as extra drive for storage.

For laptops which already use SATA for the CD/DVD drive you just need to produce the slider... 3 Comments »

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by benjesuit 06/12/07 **REVIEWED**

Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied.
We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

More Dell <-> Community Communication

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 05/15/07

Certainly, Dell's move to start IdeaStorm was a good one, and I think it will improve the situation quite a bit.

What I'd like to see is more direct and spontaneous (but somewhat official) communication between Dell employees and the users of this site. dell_admin1 does communicate with us, but mainly about administrative issues.

You get our feedback. We want your feedback. Agree?

jmxz's part of the idea (his article was merged here):

IdeasStorm needs more participation from Dell Management and Employees

Dell has meetings with the management to discuss Ideas that are posted to the site. Why can’t some of those managers stop by and ask questions or maybe enlighten users when they suggest an idea that isn’t feasible. I’m not saying they need to spend the whole day doing this but maybe just pop in once in a while. I believe that such conversations lead to better ideas not only from us but from Dell employees as well. This kind of interaction would also make users know that they are being listened to. Further information in the comments of this Idea. 210 Comments »

Dell should use silver-zinc batteries: safer, longer-lasting and can be recycled

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by jervis961 03/31/07

"Zinc Matrix Power rechargeable batteries deliver up to twice the runtime of traditional Li-ion batteries. They also have an aqueous chemistry that is not flammable or toxic. As a result of the inherent safety, silver-zinc batteries are not subject to airline restrictions. Furthermore, the key components of silver-zinc battery technology can be 100% recycled and reused, making it an environmentally conscious alternative to many existing battery technologies."

Support Telecommuting work from home 2 days a week - and make a Telecommuting IT system 'turnkey' product to sell to others

Dell, Environment submitted by reg 06/06/07

Support Telecommuting and Work from home 2 days a week. That's like a $100+ a month bonus right there, saving money on gas, parking, and tolls.

Get those cars off the road! Especially during 'Rush Hour' (when traffic is slowest and the fuel wasted is at a maximum - you can see the pollution in the air and taste its poison every morning).

If you have a few thousand employees working from home two days a week,
you'll take those cars off the road, save the employees rush hour time wasted in traffic, and have yet another PR project to tout:

Dell TeleOffice System

'The New Dell' - Thinking Green by keeping the Air Clean.

If your employees work at a desk, answering the phone, typing on a computer: why get into a metal box, burn hydrocarbons, ride an elevator, and sit under expensive lights, to do what could be done by logging into the network from home,
and routing all network traffic and phone calls over VoIP to the employee's house?

A bet a lot of Dell employees would be willing to try the Work From Home 2 Days a Week program.

DELL - Be Green, and save green ($) too!

After you've perfected a DELL work at home system, bundle it as a package setup and sell it to thousands of corporate customers.

1. Citrix Servers
2. VoIP setup
3. Client - At Home - PCs.

The new Dell WorkFromHome System would allow tens of thousands of other employees to work from home a couple days a week, just log into the network and receive calls, email, and files directly at home through a secure, encrypted internet and Citrix session. Give users a choice of distro

Linux submitted by dalekclock 06/06/07

So, Ubuntu is good, but there are loads of other Linux distributions out there and it would be useful to give people a choice of which to use. And don't just lock us down to one distro, give us a choice of several, maybe even let us provide a link to a distro we want to use. 6 Comments »

Give us the ability to eject a disc from a laptop's drive when it is powered off.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by joeevil5000 06/06/07

I have heard a lot of people asking for a warning that you have a disc in your CD/DVD drive when you power it down. The best remedy for this is the ability to eject a disc even if the laptop is powered off. It would take an extremely minimal amount of power from the battery to pop open a disc drive. If the XPS M1210 can detect wi-fi networks with the power off, something like this shold be extremely simple. 7 Comments »

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by mrlinux11 06/05/07

1) Making it easier to find on the website
2) Adding back the extended hardware support (all other systems have it)
3) Some more Advertising on their website 7 Comments »

No pre-installed software!

Operating Systems, Software submitted by power3d 06/04/07

It would be good if we could buy the hardware only without any kind of software.
I am not excluding optional software (windows or Linux), but it would be good if we also had the option NO PRE-INSTALLED SOFTWARE. 4 Comments »

Dell Tablet with Ubuntu

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by mark13 06/04/07

Today Dell don't offer tablet PC's. Tablet's are expensive for the majority people. But normally the tablet options are offer only with high specs hardware and software. Why not offer a simple hardware configuration in a tablet PC, like celeron 1.5GHZ or semprom 1.8GHz, 512MB Ram and with Ubuntu??? 7 Comments »
