Increase the Salary of all Dell Staff - except senior managers/execs

Dell submitted by badblood 04/08/07

Dell profits are grand, even during low seasons. Give a little more back to all those people that make it possible - DELL EMPLOYEES! And I don't mean a bonus, I mean an honest to god meaningful salary increase. Include in that all the Dell Dudes working in call centres around the globe.

Make them LOVE TO WORK AT DELL!

Service and Support submitted by badblood 04/09/07

Up the stakes and make Dell a 'desirable' place to work. How do you do that, well attractive packages help, so does the 'cool' factor. 'Cool' means a creative and colorful environment - lava lamps, and a management team that dresses modestly and roams among the plebes. A place where creativity, individuality and individual work performance are praised and measured and rewarded. A place where there is genuine encouragement and mutual support. Right now, Dell is about as hipp as the Dept of Transportation! It makes me shudder to think of all the suits down there...

Offer the Dvorak Keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 04/11/07

The Dvorak keyboard is an ergonomic alternative to the layout commonly found on typewriters and computers known as "Qwerty". The Qwerty keyboard was designed in the 1870s to accommodate the slow mechanical movement of early typewriters. When it was designed, touch typing literally hadn't even been thought of yet! It's hardly an efficient design for today's use. By contrast, the Dvorak (pronounced "duh-VOR-ack", not like the Czech composer!) keyboard was designed with emphasis on typist comfort, high productivity and ease of learning -- it's much easier to learn! There were several variations in the Dvorak's design in its first few decades, but these were settled when the American National Standards Institute approved a standard for the layout of the Dvorak in 1982. The diagram above shows the standard layout as adapted for PC use. 12 Comments »

who makes decisions about ideas on ideastorm

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 05/06/07

I was just wondering, who makes the decision in Dell to implement or discuss an idea on ideastorm. Who recommends ideas to management, is there someone filtering ideas, sorting them, writing notes on them, sending them to M. Dell or what? It seems unlikely to me that senior managers look at the site very much...so who does....and is there some type of committee set up to review the ideas...

How does it all work? 12 Comments »

Coat laptops in rubber

Laptops submitted by badblood 05/06/07

Make the edges and top rubber. It gives the sense that the laptop is stronger, even though it probably isn't. The Pepperpad has nice rubber edges. 5 Comments »

Stop the Idea-Police: IdeaStorm should be Moderated by Dell alone.

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 05/16/07

This might seem a strange idea to suggest. But a few people on this site have taken it upon themselves to become idea-police, identifying alleged duplicates and so-called 'non-ideas'. We are being sidetracked.

This site should be solely moderated by Dell.

Dell just need to do a better and faster job, which responds to user suggestions.

And we need to spend more time on ideas and less time on filing. 18 Comments »

Promote gives points; Demote takes them away.

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 05/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Votes make the points for ideas go up and down, but positive or negative votes make a users points always go up. For user points positive vote makes the points go up and negative vote make the points go down. That should equalize things.....

User points no longer go up when people demote their ideas. The reason it's only partially implemented is that we do not have demotes taking users' points away - there's still a debate on whether or not to do that.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Better Notebook sound and features

Laptops submitted by foxx 02/17/07

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.

Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

Laptop design - use different materials

Environment, Laptops submitted by badblood 05/28/07

Dell laptop designs are fine, functional and they are OK to look at. They are not Macs in design terms but who really gives a crap.

It might be nice though to use different materials, such as ceramic compounds, brushed aluminum, rubbers-edges, and as reg offered ages ago bamboo. 3 Comments »

Dell Ambassadors

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood 06/05/07

There is a tendency to communicate tech products to the main purchasing audience - people between 20-40, people who are often more technically knowledgeable. This is because the people who sell or market these products are often from these groups But people outside these groups have a stake in Dell products and services and they should be communicated with too.

To communicate with these people Dell needs ambassadors, respected and popular characters of appeal to a particular age group, to a class or gender. They should communicate to that group why Dell products are for them.

The same applies for people of different nationalities.

Dell embrace diversity! 8 Comments »

Don't Forget GNU

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by badblood 06/07/07

Linux is not the operating system. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in a combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU, with Linux functioning as its kernel.

Many users are not fully aware of the distinction between the kernel, which is Linux, and the whole system, which they also call “Linux”. The ambiguous use of the name doesn't promote understanding. Linux systems are more accurately called GNU/Linux systems.

Dell don't forget GNU, because without GNU we have very little! 5 Comments »

Ubuntu-Vista Dual-boot

Linux, Operating Systems, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by badblood 06/08/07 **NOT NOW**

As Dell Ubuntu and Vista computer systems are priced roughly the same, then Dell could give us both OS' for the same price.

Sounds reasonable, no? 17 Comments »

Customer Bill of Rights

Service and Support submitted by badblood 06/12/07

Above all else, Dell should be dedicated to bringing excellent customer service, products and support. Dell needs to strive to make every part of the customer experience as simple, effective and as pleasant as possible. Unfortunately, there are times when things do not go as planned or as expected. If customers are inconvenienced as a result, it is important that they know exactly what they can expect from Dell. That's why you need a Customer Bill of Rights, which outlines Dell's commitments to its customers. 6 Comments »
