Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

No OS Preloaded

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by agreer 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

Can we get Studio Hybrid with Ubuntu?

Desktops, Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by arhere Aug 1

I LOVE the new Studio Hybrid PC's. Can we get it preinstalled with Ubuntu? This would drop the price even more and be a GREAT PC for surfing the Web and such.

If you say no to this idea, can we at least get a "Ubuntu capable" certification for the hardware?

Monitor with integrated peripheral switch

Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by e1wings Jul 23

Monitor with integrated peripheral switch

It would be nice to have a peripheral switch integrated into the monitor. Then I will have my mouse and my keyboard (PS2 or USB) connected to the monitor. Additionally it would be nice to have PiP (picture in picture) functionality for the 2 video sources.

I can think of these 2 use cases
1) I have 2 desktops. Use a switch on a monitor to reconnect the monitor itself and input devices to one desktop or another. The switch button can be located on a monitor or soft-programmed to one of the keys on a keyboard.

2) I have a desktop and a notebook. Then such monitor could replace a port replicator for the notebook.

I nice benefit is that I will not only have less input devices but also less cables starching to the system block. 4 Comments »

Contribute Code to Ubuntu

New Product Ideas, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by loneowais Jul 23

I always wanted Dell to make a Ubuntu based OS for Dell System like Apple have. But why should Dell so such a thing when it already has a great OS like ubuntu.

I think Dell should not just remaster ubuntu but customize it & add new features to it for Dell system.

This code should be then supplied to Cannonical so that they can benifit from it & make a great software even greater. 13 Comments »

Quad core processors in laptops

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by dellrox Jul 19

I think that putting the quad cores in a laoptop would be great for Dell. You would revolutionize the lapto sales, as you would be the first to do it. Desktops have htem and they will be mainstream very shortly. Why not make them in laptops? Please look into this. 10 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Match HP's Vista refund of $200 for people who reject the pre-installed Vista EULA.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz Jul 21

It looks like HP is now refunding $200 to people who reject the pre-installed Vista license agreement

I went down to Best Buy and picked up an HP dv6815nr since it was on sale for $599.99+tax. After powering it up, I was confronted by the Microsoft Windows Vista EULA and the HP EULA: ... [long story].... I received a check from HP in the mail for $200 on 7/17/08 ... So, world, it CAN be done - this is ~34% refund bringing the total cost of my laptop to $399.99+tax. Don't take NO for an answer. Know your rights and enforce them, or you may one day no longer have them.

Idea: Match the refund HP's giving for people who reject the Vista EULA.

(note that this idea is about the dollar-value of the discount; and shouldn't be merged into the ideas about making the process easier) 4 Comments »

studio and xps should be changed!!!

Laptops submitted by bonymjose Jul 25

dell,
can't u put centrino 2 platform to studio and xps line???? .
studio 15 needed to have a better graphic card!! gddr3 should be used instead of ddr2 for graphics in studio.

also why are u not upgrading xps line with growing trends??

also can't u upgrade your graphics cards on xps 1530 ????
and put an additional options like backlit keyboard or something?? Also more powerful ddr3 rams??

consider implementing these changes to other countries as well when they are implemented!! usually it takes many months to travel these changes to other countires!! why are u putting these delays and some options already present like full hd display (19200 x 1080) on xps 1530 and studio 15 in some countries!! why are u not considering other countries????

thanku!! 1 Comment »

Put Ubuntu on sale at the same time as Windows (unfair to Ubuntu sales count if we install it afterwords)

Advertising and Marketing submitted by brett_alton Jun 26

I'm pretty frustrated to receive a flyer with a Inspiron 1525 laptop on sale for $599 while the Ubuntu laptop with the same specs are $699.

Why is this frustrating you ask? Why don't you just buy the $599 laptop, wipe it and put Ubuntu on it you say?

Well, I can easily purchase the $599 laptop, wipe Windows off and put Ubuntu on but there are two problems with that:

1) I don't get Dell's support for Ubuntu Linux
2) Dell doesn't see what I do with my PC after I purchase it, thus, they don't know that they actually sold an Ubuntu laptop. This means that it is one more Windows laptop sold over a Ubuntu laptop. Why is this important?

Well, apparently a few weeks after supporting Ubuntu, Dell sold 40,000 Ubuntu-based laptops. It is finally my turn to purchase one, but I want to be added to that count so that Dell knows I'm buying an Ubuntu-based laptop. Why is this important?

I want Dell to continue selling Ubuntu-based laptops, so I think it would be in the Linux communities and Dell's best interest to offer the same deals on Ubuntu laptops as Windows laptops.

I don't want Windows Vista and I don't want you to think I want Windows Vista. I want Ubuntu, but I want to pay the same price as the other guys. 9 Comments »

64 Bit Vista and more than 4 GB RAM

Desktops, XPS products submitted by dellrox Jul 24

HP has the option for 64 bit Vista and 32 bit Vista, why not Dell? Also, put the option in to XPS 620 desktops for more than 4GB RAM. You do this for Dell Precision Workstations, why not Home Gaming Desktops.

Look into this for me please. 9 Comments »

Non-Glare High Resolution LED Displays

Monitors and Displays, XPS products, Vostro products submitted by anonym Jul 18

Please stop the glossy display nonsence and provide a non-glare display options for all models. If possible with LED backlight, because it is brighter, thinner and less power consuming. I like the XPS M1330 very much, but the glossy display is a real show stopper...

Btw, the glossy finish of the Vostro 1310 case also seems quite pointless to me. 18 Comments »
