Go open source

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by eric.c 02/27/07

Dell needs to offer the software installed choices when ordering, I find that when I get my new dell PC, it's filled with junk and the 1st thing I do is reinstall wither Windows, or put a distro of Linux on it. Dell should offer operating systems other than Windows (like linus and OS X, if Apple agrees) and offer a no software package, or operating system ONLY package. the no software package would contain absolutely nothing. You will need to install your own operating system. the system only package will just install the operating system and its applications (i.e. Windows Mail and Media Center for Windows, OpenOffice and Firefox for Linux, and iTunes and Dashboard for OS X). Not Vista Please

Operating Systems submitted by mhyst 02/27/07

Do whatever you want except preinstalling Windows Vista or any Microsoft future attempt to reduce our freedom.

I don't have any faith in DELL. You'll end up with Vista preinstalled.
Please, don't act as if you'd mind what buyers think. Most buyers are zombies after all.

Bye

PD: I forgot... My computer isn't DELL and I haven't any plan to became a DELL customer.

I've got already my compensation writing this message. Thanks 1 Comment »

Media Center Linux Boxes

Linux, Sales Strategies, Software submitted by mastjaso 02/27/07

I think that many people would want media center pcs for their living rooms except for two reasons:

1. $$$ - For many paying for a premium computer just to put in your living costs too much.

2. Design - Big bulky computers are ugly, and unattractive in the living room.

SOLUTION:

To reduce the price I suggest offering a linux based computer specificully for this purpose. It can be stream-lined for easy set-up, remote use, and with a linux based media-center program pre-installed. It would have all compatible hardware and everything would be preinstalled. It should also be network and sharing ready so that file sharing can be used easily. It should also be put into a nice, pretty, small case. 1 Comment »

linux

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by casperlory 02/27/07

I don't know anything about Linux, but why not give customers a choice re operating systems? I.E. If they want windows, then install windows. if they want Linux, then install Linux, etc. This would make the company more responsive to customer needs and wants without risking losing windows users. Linux: Make it happen!

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by minollo 02/28/07

I will buy a new laptop in the next 2-3 months.

I will leave "forever" Microsoft Windows, I can't tolarate it anymore for a lot of reasons. I tried Linux, it works well but I think that its main problem relies on drivers. As a simple consumer I would really appreciate a "pre-installed" linux option on every single computer, in this way I should not worry about my hardware.

Today there are no options. All is GENUINE Windows ready! No freedom to choose!

I don't think a computer without any operating system as a real alternative, it is just cheaper.

I thought much about my new computer and finally I decided for a Mac. It is different, it is UNIX-based (as linux) even if it is more expensive than any PC with similar hardware features.

I suggest you to think about your businness with Microsoft. Be brave opening new ways.

Dellideastorm is a worderful idea, now you can see what people want, there are not justifications anymore!

Get Linux certified by a well-established FOSS company whose motives are clear

Dell, Linux submitted by sinthetek 02/28/07

You are are asking for failure if you expect end-users or FOSS companies to give much support to or expect it from an MS-partnered company. How do you expect anyone with any knowledge of Microsoft practices and their attacks against Linux/OSS to do anything but sabotage the efforts of the FOSS community? Noone who truly wants or needs Linux is going to care about giving money to or receiving certification from companies who will only use that support to crush them later on. If you need certification, get your own team of Linux-experts or hire a company who isn't out to destroy Open Source and take it away as soon as we almost have it! 2 Comments »

Stop allegiance to Microsoft

Dell submitted by danielpf 02/28/07

I find the obvious allegiance of Dell to Microsoft disgusting. Most somewhat knowledgeable Microsoft users I know of in fact *hate* Windows, because the user experience with Windows is poor, or because Microsoft's arrogance and monopoly become unbearable. People are forced to use Microsoft products due to monopoly, not by choice. In this context, Dell plays the role of a servile vassal, which is bad for its image.

On the other hand Dell produces fine hardware. Each time I have bought Dell laptops I was strongly hesitating to take another brand just because off the obligatory attached Microsoft software. Some time ago I had to choose 66 high performance servers for my company: the deal with Dell was technically competitive, but the deal went to another company clearly less dependent on Microsoft.

My sincere best idea that I offer to Dell is to cut its strong ties with Microsoft. 2 Comments »

We want to be able to choose Linux!

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by libres-ailees 02/28/07

DELL can easily offer various OS to be pre-installed at a cost or computers that are totally empty as the customer thinks best for her. Some people may want Ubuntn but would like to have it installed while others want to install their favourite Linux distribution.

DELL doesn't need to display Windows-ready stickers.

We want freedom of choice, and we don't wnat to pay for a useless licences if we choose free software. 1 Comment »

Where we want to go today --- LINUX ----

Linux submitted by nanotech_lizard 02/28/07

I hope Dell doesn't drag it's feet very long. Our company is switching everything to Linux; the first HP servers have arrived and the first desktops, laptops are due to arrive in April and they are not running windows!!! We have already started Star/Open Office, our developement has moved to QT4.2 (TrollTech) and Mono. Killed Exchange for Scalix; 2 MSSQL servers are still running (for now) the rest/future have/will be moved to PostgreSQL and MySQL. I am moving our automation control to Linux (Scadabase). My point is we are retiring all our current Dell Equipment and since Dell is not positioned to meet our needs we chose HP / IBM / Lenovo.
Everything works, VID-EVDO-WiFi etc..... the time and money savings from trying to convert our current Dell systems to Linux is astounding...YOU are missing the point of not only our business but many others. We are a very small company I talked to my Dell rep 02.27.07 and was advised he would keep me informed when Dell could meet our needs; I just wonder if you (Dell) will even make it to the dance. After MS announcement on VM's and that customers were getting more use out of MS software than paid for (see VMware site)... there will never be VISTA on our horizon.
----- SLED/SLES10 --- UBUNTU ---- CentOS ---- Xandros ----- Debian
uhhh HP made some pocket change suportting the FREE DEBIAN ($25mil) and growing ;) and on another note our employees are requesting advice on Linux home computers :) 4 Comments »

FOSS\Freeware Repository

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by paddy2k 02/28/07

If Dell provided a Start Center that offered users the option to install different types of Freeware and Open Source Software, eg Internet browsers etc.

This would give new users visibility of alternatives to the current applications that are bundled with the OS or hold the dominant market share.

This "repository" (for a better word) could be styled on the Package Managers of Fedora/Ubuntu etc and could be written so that it would be cross platform and available to both Windows and GNU/Linux users. Comment »

Linux options - it must avoid the Microsoft Tax

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by royeasto 02/28/07

I like the new ordering site but would like more options. I don't want to buy a screen or mouse or keyboard, I already have loads of them. Offering systems without unwanted extras would be a very environmentally friendly step. I don't want to buy a screen I have a beautiful Elo touchscreen that is delightful for most operations. I would recommend an option of a touchscreen. But most of all I want to use my machine for Linux. I have 3 Linux systems, one Windows XP and one Mac at home.

I haven't bought my last few machines from you as you do not offer a system without an OS or with Linux pre-installed. I feel that buying from you I am paying my money to support Microsoft dominating the software world. I don't care what distro you put on it as I would replace it with FC6, 7... 2 Comments »

Plain, Easy-to-Access, Linux/OSS/FOSS offerings

Linux, Service and Support, Software submitted by phubert 02/28/07

I know many are complaining about the multiplicity of Linux-related idea submissions. And, I am in full agreement that many should be eliminated or MERGED.

However, I haven't seen this and would like to make it VERY plain:

If Dell is going to offer Linux/OSS/FOSS alternatives for their desktops and laptops, they should be EASY TO FIND.

In fact, this should be offered ALONGSIDE the Windows offerings.

Although I don't like seeing the Vista recommendation, if Dell included "If you would like OS and Application software alternatives, Dell representatives will be happy to discuss available options with you!", I'd be VERY satisfied.

But, this also means both PHONE and WEB ordering should FULLY and clearly represent and support such Dell offerings.

I realize Dell couldn't possibly attempt to offer every conceivable combination of Linux/OSS/FOSS choices. They WILL have to pick some packages and options that will be easy for them to provide.

I WOULD NOT expect them to SUPPORT every piece of software so provided!

Linspire/Ubuntu could handle their own updates very nicely, for example.

OpenOffice and Firefox will both check for their own updates.

I'm sure what most of us want to see is the ability to install and run on a wide range of Dell systems. Any Dell GUARANTEE of such, however, will require work on THEIR part... UNLESS distributors are SO excited about the Dell moves that THEY offer to DO the certification.

For essentially unfunded distributions, that would be difficult or impossible. So, let's show some common sense here in what we ask for! 1 Comment »

Better Linux support

Linux, Service and Support submitted by bobanek 02/28/07

I would like to have better support of Dell HW for Linux distributions. Generally Dell's support is perfect and if you add for each model support for Linux distributions - optimized drivers for HW you use, possibility to have preinstalled Linux, corresponding price and web support for troubleshooting with distros it would be really nice and you would be really No.1 in the world. 1 Comment »

Open Source Software Preferred on new Computer Systems

Software submitted by hsvillagefolks 02/28/07

I am still using my old Gateway 98SE OS System & am shopping for a new System. I switched over to Thunderbird, Firefox, & OpenOffice.org, as well as Grisoft AVG, Picasa/Google, & IrfanView at least a couple of years ago. I have been very happy with all of these and don't have the problems that I had with their common equivalents that I was "forced" to use for some time.

If Dell would at least provide OpenOffice.org on a new System & leave off the 90 day Anti-Virus "stuff", I would be redirected to consider Dell when I buy my new System.

Hardware wise, I am looking for a System that will handle, imaging & music & not take the space & inconvenience of a Tower, i.e., iMac, Sony, Gateway, etc., have the motherboard of tower equivalent built into the display on the desk top, with the availablity of USB, drive accessability, etc., on the sides of the display, keyboard, etc. Thanks for the opportunity to express some of my desires. Linux

Linux submitted by crimlawfed 02/28/07

Consumers should be able to chose whichever distro. of Linux they want. Dell should put a list of the most popular on their website. A consumer could choose between one on Dell.com or any other. 3 Comments »

Open standard support

Service and Support, Software submitted by federico2 02/28/07

When a Dell pc comes with preinstalled software, such software (whichever it is) should let the user use ALSO standard open formats.

This includes e.g.:

- OpenDocument (ISO standard)

- OGG Vorbis (de facto standard open format for compressed audio)

- OGG Theora (the same for compressed video)

- SIP and/or H.323 (VoIP)

- SVG (vector graphics)

- XMPP (Jabber) (instant messaging compatible with Google Talk)

- iCalendar (calendar data exchange)

... and so on.

There are many free plugins that enable closed software (i.e. Microsoft Office) to use such standards. 4 Comments »

Is the TCO of Linux much lower then MS Windows

Operating Systems submitted by izach 02/28/07

IMHO when we're considering open source support, and integration (e.g., device drivers, etc), Linux cost isn't that much lower than MS Windows. Assuming H/W cost remains equal. 9 Comments »
