Publish the "noise" specs on every PC

Dell Web Site, Desktops and Laptops submitted by stk 05/02/07

I want to buy a quiet PC, but Dell doesn't quote noise specs anywhere on the website.

For example, the XPS 210 says: "Runs cool, quiet, and is energy efficient"
but the tech specs on the noise are nowhere to be found (not even on the "tech specs" page for that PC).

If you really make quiet PCs, then why hide the noise specs? Why not make it a standard part of the tech specs page for each machine? 9 Comments »

Make Dell desktop systems "QUIET"

Desktops submitted by jtome 04/20/07

I currently own a Dell XPS tower. It works great, but while doing professional design work it gets hot and starts making an awful amount of noise. I've tried turning on the AC during the summer, this helps but the system even gets hot in the winter time! I have another smaller Dell desktop in the other room which does not make noise, but it is not as powerful. I've upgraded my XPS system to have a TV Tuner and watch live TV. This works great but after a few hours of watching the fans are running hard.

I've used Apple Mac Pro systems which are more powerful than my 3.2Ghz XPS system and they are super quiet. I've even gone into computer labs which have all XP Intel extreme systems and another lab with all Mac pro systems and the noise difference is astonishing. You could hear pins dropping in the Mac Pro lab while they have to have the AC on 24/7 in the XP Lab to keep the buzzing noises down.

I've had clients over my house before to record audio for a video I was editing, and I had to ask them to be patient while I powered down my XPS system to cool off !! 6 Comments »

Fanless graphic cards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by cray1903 03/21/07

As Dell systems are usually low noise (except for the hard drive sometimes), the choice of a good fanless graphical card (Geforce 7900GS for instance) would be a nice choice.
I think lots of people are ready to spend some bucks for silence.
So being able to choose a "quiet" GC for a Dimension 9200 seems a good idea to me.

PS: the hard drive should be chosen more carefully for "quiet" purposes. Comment »

Noise level information on product pages

Dell Web Site submitted by jaybee 02/20/07

The noise level has for many years been raised as more powerful CPUs, graphics cards etc has been added. Personally, I've lately been looking for an replacement to my old fan-monster. And it should be quiet! Watercooling or passive cooling is of course an option, but I've been having good experiences with my Dell Laptop and a Dell at work. Sadly, there are no information about the noise level of the various Dell products. Please add that to the specification pages on the web site. Comment »

Begin using SSD flash memory on laptops and axe moving parts to eliminate noise and reduce power consumption and boot times

Laptops submitted by matthewmason 02/19/07

Flash memory will take off soon if Dell would take a supply-side approach and begin offering solid state disk as an alternative to the conventional hard drive. We would all appreciate the reduced boot time.

http://www.sandisk.com/Corporate/PressRoom/PressReleases/PressRelease.aspx?ID...

While SSD may currently be limited to tablet PCs and military applications, perhaps Dell could use a hybrid drive in the interim to allow for superior seek times, suspend-to-disk time, and power management. Additionally, in the meantime, publish noise statistics and decibel ratings.

Also, to eliminate noise and reduce power consumption, do away with the hard drive and fan in regular Dell laptops. These may be the first steps to a green, or at least greener, PC. Comment »

Fix QuietCase cooling design so hard drives don't get so hot

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage submitted by spamblock 03/02/07

I purchased a Dell E510 QuietCase with two hard drives and it consistently ran hotter than any other system I can remember. The vent on the bottom was apparently more for the sake of appearance than for actual cooling. Very little air flowed over either drive. The bottom hard disk drive got hotter than the top. Those plastic mounting clips don't conduct heat, which doesn't help. I don't think drive cooling was taken seriously in this model, and that means shorter drive life. This is one of the reasons I tossed that very cheaply made case and bought a new one. Now my drives consistently run at least 20 degrees C cooler (about 36 deg F). Note: Temperature was measured using shareware SpeedFan utility. Comment »

Silent Graphics Card Option

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by fahim.a.sabir 04/21/07

Hi,

Firstly, I think this is a great idea.

I recently bought a Dimension 9200 which included a GeForce 7900 which has fan that is really loud under Vista - so much so that when I put a passive 7600 in my machine, I could barely hear it.

I am actually quite disappointed as the machine was advertised as being cool and quiet. It is far from what I would describe as quiet and has forced me to spend a further £80 to get a replacement graphics card. The only reason I chose this particular card was because it was the cheapest one that gave me 2 DVI ports.

I have been given the excuse about fan control by drivers in Vista, and to be quite frank I don't care. Dell sold me the system, so I hold them responsible for any issues with it.

Please sort this out, these days - with the technology about, there is no reason for a computer to make any noise - I mean Apple computers are silent.... Comment »

noise and heat reduction for laptops

Laptops submitted by harborsparrow 02/17/07

Noise and heat matters...my Macbook is quiet, but it gets hot. I place it on a raised plastic kitchen sink mat that lets the bottom breathe--low tech, cheap, pretty and effective! See http://harbor 1 Comment »

BETTER AND QUIET HARD DRIVES

Servers and Storage submitted by gizmo1172 06/24/07

Dell should consider to include quiet and efficient hard drives on their computers, i have notice the xps 410 is making loud noises coming up from the hard drive and these hard drives are also crashing several times which is not good because requeries to install windows over and over again. 3 Comments »

Improvements on Desktops

Desktops submitted by erika 02/17/07

I have owned a variety of dell desktops but was not happy with the after service and various build issues. I just had a computer built by a company called pugetcomputers and I still can't get over what a great computer they put together for me. A sturdy and dead quiet case even though I built it with lots of components. The computer runs quiet and fast and if I do need help it's available right away with a thousand questions and menu holds!!!!!!!! Dell needs to offer mre levels of higher componenets and a mush better hassle free customer service! After three computer's you totally lost me as a client! Comment »

More feedback from Dell on popular ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by pjeff Feb 15

I would like to see more (official) feedback from Dell on popular ideas eg. +1000 ideas.
For example, many people have been requesting an LED backlit screen for the XPS M1530. Look on any forum where this model is being discussed and you will see people saying that they are holding off on purchasing until it becomes available (I'm one of them!) so it would be helpful to know what is happening.

Another example would be illuminated keyboards. Saying it is "partially implemented" doesn't really tell us anything. We know you have done that! If a popular idea is not practical or its implementation is problematic for whatever reason, communicate back so discussion can take place. This is how brainstorming works!

I also wonder how many good ideas are overlooked because Dell believe the cost would be too great for the product in question. Be upfront about your concerns regarding costs. For example, you may find that Inspiron/Vostro customers would not be prepared to pay extra for a premium screen and illuminated keyboard but XPS customers are. Post polls so that members can vote on these issues and provide you with accurate data. We are here to help so use us. 7 Comments »

Fix CPU Whine On Intel Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by codemonkeyx 08/08/07

This issue has been ignored by Dell, and other manufactures for far too long. I was hoping the issue had been addressed with the new M1330 laptop I just bought, but it has not.

When the CPU enters low power mode it makes a whining sound all the time. It's quite bad, and has been reported all over the web by thousands of users.

Dell needs to sit down with Intel, and figure out what is going on and stop ignoring the problem. 80 Comments »

Let the cooling fan rock!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by fleser 10/18/07

has anybody out there seen a really silent notebook fan ?... let me know!
I have not! So as long as we can not eliminate the cooling fan sound (ear plugs are no solution),

why not convert the fan NOISE to MELODIES?

Any wishes for a melody, song ..? 16 Comments »

Desktop Cases that Don't Rattle!

Desktops submitted by marph 02/21/07

Dell needs to make cases that don't rattle and hum. I'm sick of trying to balance a book on the top of the case to cut down on the vibration. This has happened to me straight from the factory, and also after I opened the case to do some mods (and then closed the case). No more noisy computers! Comment »

Make Desktop Cases That Don't Make Buzzing Vibration Noises

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dimension products submitted by nx3sj4 07/28/07

Every Dell computer I've owned had a screwless case that just snapped open and shut. Unfortunately, although this is eco-friendly and convenient, the pieces don't fit securely enough and I get constant buzzing or rattling noise until I put endless amounts of tape around the case, and that still doesn't quiet it. On my 2007 Dimension E521, the metal snap-together case is quiet, but the black plastic frame in front of the drive bays vibrates and sounds like a semi truck idling. I have all sorts of ugly tape and sticky spots now on the box in my attempt to silence it. Comment »

Fix noisy humming buzzing vibrating tool-free case design!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by spamblock 03/02/07

The 5100/510 toolless case design makes it the most distracting case I have ever owned. It's maddening. It's like the cause is haunted with vibrations. I spent literally hours taping up the case and front panel so it would stop making noise and vibrating, then finally gave up and bought a third party case, which forced me to buy a new motherboard and new copy of Windows.

If Dell can make a good quiet case with decent cooling behavior, I'll buy another one (but not before they do). Comment »

dell computer case design

Desktops and Laptops submitted by korya1 Mar 7

i would like dell to start building computers with cases that are held together with scrues instead of the current design of opening a side panel to get the case open. and i would like dell to design a case with the cd drives on the right side of the case and usb and head set jack on the left instead of the current design of the cd drive on the left and the usb and headset jack on the right. 10 Comments »
