Docking Station for Vostro

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products, Vostro products submitted by coachcg 07/21/07

Vostro looks like a good system and has some strengths over Latitude like the enhanced integrated sound, longer battery life, and better screen option, but lacks docking capability. So I went with Latitude, but I could really use those features mentioned. Could Dell look into adding those options to Latitude notebooks or adding a docking option to Vostro?

Use Latitude keyboard layout in Vostro laptops (standard Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDown position)

Inspiron products, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by donut May 17

Latitude laptops have a pretty nice key layout.

I think Vostro laptops, which are also business-oriented, should either use the exact same keyboard as Latitudes, or at least the same layout. The Vostro keyboard has several deficiencies compared with the Latitude ones.

For example the Latitude D830 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/lat_d830.jpg
(Warning: very large picture. If anyone has the URL for a picture with a more head-on view of the keyboard, please post here.)

The Ins, Del, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys are in the same 3x2 layout as a standard desktop PC keyboard, at the top right of the keyboard. So it will be easy to adapt between using a desktop keyboard and the laptop one.

Also, the right part of Caps Lock is recessed to reduce the chance of accidentally pressing it, and the cursor keys are the same size as letter keys. (It's not perfect though; who knows why the Windows menu key is at the top rather than to the right of the space bar?)

By comparison, see the Vostro 1710 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/vostro_171...
(Warning: another large picture)

Those six keys are in non-standard positions, in particular the PgUp, PgDown, Home and End keys are all on the bottom row underneath the numeric keypad. The Caps Lock key is not recessed, and the cursor keys are smaller than normal. (At least the Windows menu key is in the right place!) 2 Comments »

Make a touchpad Vostro Notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by ccpljat May 27

I think a lot of small businesses would like to see a computer geared specifically toward small businesses that has the capability of a touch screen. This seems to be the future of computing, what with Microsoft Touch and the mobile touch devices. You could even make it an option to add to the already available Vostro 1310. This shouldn't be terribly difficult. 1 Comment »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 244 Comments »

Ditch the Home/Small Business/Enterprise trichotomy

Sales Strategies, Small Business, Laptops submitted by majid 02/17/07

What products I am interested in do not correlate with myself or my company size. It used to be that high-end thin-and-light laptops would not be available in the Home segment, only the Enterprise segment. I'm sorry, just because I am a small-business owner or a home user does not mean I am ready to settle for inferior options deemed "good enough" by the powers that be.

This whole notion of three segments is a relic of a company-centric rather than customer centric marketing culture. 9 Comments »

Hardware configurator--specify hardware options and receive a list of laptops or desktops matching your query...

Dell Web Site submitted by enigma_0z 10/19/07

One thing that I find myself doing is configuring multiple Dell computers on the website to price-compare. If there was a tool that I could input some specifications (ex: laptop, 15.4 widescreen, 2.0 GHZ Duo, 3GB of ram) and then get a list of all computers that can be configured like that, it would be alot simpler to decide on a computer.

Here's how I would like it to work. You specify certain requirements for a computer (any of OS, CPU, GFX card, Display, Bluetooth, Wireless, RAM, et cetera).

The list that then comes back has the unconfigured options on each laptop, as well as the base price matching your configuration. You could then configure each one to whatever you would like and compare all the prices quickly and efficiently. 4 Comments »

Matte high-resolution screens

Monitors and Displays submitted by programmer001 03/05/07

Dell unfortunately jumped on the TrueLife display for laptops.
These are good for gaming and movies because of the colors and brightness, but are bad for working because they are too much reflective. I am a programmer and the reason for which I used to buy Dell is because of the very high resolution screens (UXGA, WUXGA). In facts I would like to see high-resolution screens available in more laptop models, possibly even in the 15" ones, and in particular I would like to see MATTE high-resolution screens available, not TrueLife.

I guess movies/gaming customers probably buy low-resolution screens, while programmers like me buy high-resolution screens (UXGA, WUXGA) and these are the ones that would benefit from a modern matte screen. A good choice for Dell would probably be to provide the low resolution screens as TrueLife and the high resolution ones as matte, while now it is more like the opposite.

Please offer matte high-res screens at least as an option. 6 Comments »

More screen options on Inspiron 1520 (and a 1520n would be nice)

Inspiron products, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by dara 08/09/07

Ideally I'd like to be able to buy an Inspiron 1520 with WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution and with Ubuntu on it (so it would be a 1520n I guess). I don't understand why the Latitude D830 has this screen but it isn't available on the Inspiron. If you won't let home users buy Latitudes (I'm sure some people do, but I've read that it can be problematic), then please offer the screen options from those laptops on the home laptops. 2 Comments »

standardise WUXGA resoloution on all dell monitors

Monitors and Displays submitted by blah 09/21/07

we don't see much of WUXGA screen res, but is required for displaying full 1080 hd. i think dell should provide an option for WUXGA 1920x1200 resolution for all notebooks, not only the 17" models, and make it standard on displays.

It is somewhat ironic that dell offers blu-ray, and doesn't have the ability to display it's hd output Comment »

WUXGA Screens for 15.4" Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by kirupa 02/17/07

I was a longtime Inspiron user - having gone through the 5150 and 6000 variants because they provided great 15"/15.4" laptops with WUXGA screens. Will those screen options every be brought back for the 15.4" Inspirons?

Only the 17" models and the Latitude/Precision brands offer that screen now.

Cheers!

Allow total customization of LCDs on laptops

Monitors and Displays submitted by ewdin 09/30/07

Many low-end laptops, like the Dell Vostro 1000, Inspiron 1501, come with low-resolution (15.4" WXGA) displays, some even in glossy form. Some people like me require a laptop to do very little as we already have desktops/servers to do the hard crunching, however, we do need portable systems with high-resolution LCDs.

Therefore, I would hope that Dell offer all possible LCD - Laptop combinations. (ie 15.4" WUXGA on Dell Vostro 1000, or non-glossy 15.4" WXGA+ on Inspiron 1501.) 2 Comments »
