Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

Have Ubuntu on Dell One

Linux, XPS products submitted by daniel117 Mar 12

After hearing a couple magazines and people say Vista has glitches, I think Dell's best computer ever (and best counterpart of Apple's Macs) this computer company should start looking into Linux more, especially Ubuntu. Oh sure, Dell didn't get enough people into Ubuntu, but that can be easily fixed by putting Linux into Dell One. Dell is missing out on more sales from Ubuntu fans and all you geeks out there. Not much of them, but popularity would spread and soon Vista is in the dust (not that I hate Vista, but I like Ubuntu better). 11 Comments »

All 64 Bit PC's

Desktops submitted by class2008 05/25/07

Dell should begin producing all 64 bit pc's. WIth rumors of Windows Vista being the last OS available in 32 bit, they should get consumers ready with 64 bit pc's, at reasonable prices. 50 Comments »

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Keep the XPS Product Line

XPS products submitted by dabrace1984 May 12

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line. 31 Comments »

Get rid of BIOS, use EFI

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by joeaguy 02/19/07

Why are PC makers so slow to swith from BIOS to EFI? Apple did it with their Intel macs, and there are tons of reports that Windows runs faster on a Mac under BootCamp than with equivalent PC hardware. There is something to be said for their simpler EFI based hardware architecture helping speed. If Microsoft is the big hold up here, surely PC makers can put some pressure on. The PC needs to shed all of the old tech that is still in the spec. 36 Comments »

Carbon Offset

Laptop Power submitted by plewislinux Jan 10

How hard would it be to install a photovoltaic panel on the lid of a notebook. Wouldn't that be a start towards offsetting it's total carbon footprint? In the long run wouldn't the use of these panels by Dell cause the overall price of said panels to drop? I know the panels couldn't replace the "normal" power supply ,but how much would it help in the average life cycle? 8 Comments »

IdeaStorm needs a tip section

IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 06/08/07

New people to the site could use a section with tips and tricks that can be used on the site.

Things like:

1. Clicking on a person's name(even your own) will bring up their dashboard section where you can see their: articles, Ideas they voted on, comments, saved items and at the bottom of the page a RSS link to track activity.

2. On the right side of the site above your name there is a search function Putting in key words will show Ideas containing those words. (very helpful when trying to avoid posting duplicates or finding Ideas that you want to vote on) A more useful tool for searching the site was created by another user cosh . His IdeaStorm catagorizer site has a wealth of information and a much better search function

3. Below your name is the categories section. If you click on a category only the articles that were posted to that category will be displayed. While this is nice some people put their idea to all the categories so it isn't perfect.

4. Below your name is the
button this will bring you to a page showing who has received the most votes. Also on that page you can click on the words "votes cast", "articles submitted" and "user name" to sort by those categories.

5. When creating an article or comment, if you want you can add a picture. Special thanks to reg for letting me in on that one. All you need is the correct HTML format and a link
to a picture posted on the INTERNET. You can get the address by right clicking on a picture on the INTERNET and selecting properties. In the properties it should show the direct web link for the picture just highlight the complete web link, right click and select copy so you can paste it into the HTML format.

The HTML format is

It is advised to be very selective about using pictures as they can be deemed against the terms of use if they are offensive. A good site for learning basic HTML format is http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/html/ . Also large pictures will sometimes overpower the page so I recommend using the preview button described below.

6. There is a preview button you can push before posting an article or comment. This is really useful so you don't look stupid when your picture doesn't work correctly.

7. You can cut and paste when posting articles or comments which allows you to use a word processing program to spell check for you before posting. There are also browser add ons that you can download to perform spell check without having to cut and paste. This is also another good idea but most of us are too lazy to do it, myself included.

8. You can post video from www.youtube.com in an article or comment very easily. When on youtube's site watching a video just to the right of it is a spot that says "Embed" just cut and paste the section into your comment or idea. I would suggest being careful about the content of the video.

9. Make sure to check out the ideas in action section to avoid posting an idea that has already been accepted by Dell. You don't want to be the one beating a dead horse.

10. When looking at articles by using the popular ideas and recent ideas buttons there are more links near the right side to change the way the information is displayed. The popular ideas has a selection to see certain days and the recent ideas lets you see recent articles or votes.

11. If you decide that you no longer want one of your ideas posted here is the current correct procedure. View your idea so that the comments show along with the categories assigned. At the end of the list of categories signed is the edit article option, click it. At this time the edit screen loads, change the category to "DELETE REQUESTS" and press the post button under the editorial summary section. dell_admin1 checks this category for ideas that people volunteer to have deleted, it will not be immediate so be patient.

12. You can edit your comments as well as your ideas. When looking at comments for an idea, your comments will always have an edit symbol inside the comments box.
Clicking on the symbol allows you to edit the comment in that box and then press save to post the edit.

13. More advanced users may want to use an HTML editing program to test code before posting it to the site. There are add ons available for web browsers for this function or you can download a separate program just for this function. Firefox users may want to check out SeaMonkey which is a package that includes an editor program and is available on their website as a free download.

Thanks to reg again for posting information on this program.

14. If you do find an idea that is against the Terms of use
there is a report abuse button below the title of the idea. Click on the words
report abuse and a window appears for you to enter comments.
.

15. Wording is everything when posting an idea. Try to avoid absolutes like always, all and never. Remember just because you want something doesn't mean everyone else will so making things optional will get a better response than just saying Dell should add something to a product.

16. KEEP IT SHORT - We all feel strongly about our ideas and want to ramble on sometimes but people don't like reading long posts (heck I'll be surprised if anyone has actually read this far on this one). A good idea is short and to the point, you can advise people to look at the comments in the idea for further explanation. This cuts down on the bulk in the site and also encourages people to comment on your idea.

17. Please be careful when voting. Many people have accidentally voted the wrong way or changed their mind after reading the comments in an idea. The site lacks any function to change your vote so try to get it right the first time.

18. Don't expect much interaction from Dell employees or the admins. They have their times when they will comment in spurts but overall they are mostly absent from the site. If you think of the site as more of a suggestion box you should be fine.

19. This site is a beta program from www.salesforce.com and is a work in progress. If you find a bug in the way the site works it is best to not report it. We have found that for every fix made by SalesForce they create at least one more bug if not more.

20. The moderator update and ideas in action sections have been moved over to the Direct2Dell site to enable you to post comments directly to the admins. While IdeaStorm is mostly unmoderated Direct2Dell is heavily moderated. Your comment could take hours or days to appear. Be patient, most comments will go unanswered anyway.

21. If you need to change your password or email address go to your user dashboard by clicking on your username in the top right corner of the page. In the dashboard there are links to go to your ideas, comments and account details. The account details link allows you to change your email address and or password.

There are many features on the site that newer (and some of the regular) users don't know about. I know this isn't a complete list but it would be a helpful section. Feel free to comment with anything I missed and maybe we can get dell_admin1 to
make a new page.

____________________________________________________________

On a personal note - This is a great site for sharing ideas and learning from each other. The comments on each post tend to get off track sometimes but in the long run some of these conversations lead to even better ideas. Some of the users have formed friendships on the site and enjoy joking with each other and may post a comment to your idea that seems harsh or rude. Please do not be discouraged by the comments as most are either meant as a joke or are actually trying to help but are worded incorrectly. I highly encourage you to take part in the conversations for they can be very rewarding and you might make a few new friends in the process.

Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon 07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.

My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.

Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

HDMI, HDMI, by God almighty, HDMI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by benjesuit 09/25/07

HP has had it on their notebooks for 1 year now. Come on Dell! What's it going to take to put in an HDMI port? Most of the new LCD TV's today input HDMI.

And I'm surprised that the new XPS 1730 has no HDMI port. DVI is so yesterday and is not forward thinking at all.

Your next generation Montevina based models MUST have HDMI.

And yes, this is a dupe. A dupe of my own post even. But I want to buy a Dell. But without HDMI, it makes it difficult. 30 Comments »

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

Multi-OS selection via checkboxes

submitted by xivulon 11/29/07

What about having a checkbox for each operating system in order to allow users to select multiple choices? No checkbox = no OS, multiple checkboxes = Multiboot. The conflict resolution dialog notifes about conflicts between OS and other hardware choices.

Select My Operating Systems:
[ _ ] Free DOS (info) [$0]
[ x ] Ubuntu 7.10 (info) [$0]
[ _ ] Windows XP (info) [add $50]
[ x ] Windows Vista Basic (info) [add $50]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Home Premium (info) [add $100]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Ultimate (info) [$150]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Business (info) [$100]

Ubuntu, XP and all other operating systems should be made available on all machines unless there is a fundamental hardware issue that makes a particular OS unsuitable (an issue that cannot be resolved by selecting a different component). Each item should have an info button which opens a brief explanation, a fair comparison table of all operating systems should also be provided. Details such as bootloader choice in multiboot configuration and disk allocation algorithm are left to Dell engineers to have fun with.

Hopefully that will accomodate most requests relating to OS choice while keeping the interface simple and intuitive. 26 Comments »
