More Options on the XPS 630

Personally, I like the XPS 630; it's only a few hundred more than making a similar computer yourself, but it has a really nice case, is put together for you, and comes under warranty. However, I would really like to see more options available on this computer, as well as some changes made.
Processor: Add more quad core options. You only choose between the cheapest, and one of the most expensive. I think Dell should allow the Q9300, Q9450, and Q9550 to be options. If none others, at least the Q9450; it is an extremely popular quad core processor, and could be offered at about $100 more than the Q6600 that is offered now.
Memory: As more gamers move towards Vista, they are realizing how the operating system can utilize more RAM. I would think the options for more RAM and higher speed RAM should be cheaper.
Graphic Cards: Add the option for the NVidia 9600GT. It is growing excessively popular, is cheaper than the 8800 GT and the 3870, and has nearly as much speed as the 3870. It has all of that while still offering relatively high speed. I think the XPS 630 would benefit from having this card as a slightly cheaper option that still provides a lot of performance with less power.
Motherboard: This is an option that I have never seen used. However, I would like to see Dell offer the NVidia 750i chipset as an optional motherboard upgrade. If offered for a $50-100 upgrade, it could allow the buyers to better utilize the full speed of the Wolfdale and Yorkfield cores, as well as have better performance overall.
I believe that if those ideas were implemented and put into action, Dell would further draw in the PC Gaming crowd.

XP Offered to XPS420 Customers
XPS products submitted by maddog

Dell owes XPS 420 customers an apology and the option to purchase at reduced cost (better yet FREE) XP Pro, XP Media Center, XP Home WITH ALL drivers for installation on XPS 420 systems! I’ll gladly return my Vista disks for XP any day. I’ve learned to hate Vista with a passion I cannot express in a public forum. It’s the biggest joke Microsoft has played on its customers since Windows ME.
I recently purchased an XPS420 with Vista Home Premium. I was told by the sales person that XP was not available and would not work with this particular model. I had the system up and running XP Pro within 6 hours including hunting down drivers which was not easy. The only drivers that I haven’t been able to locate is for the Blue Tooth package (19 in 1 card reader). Some of the drivers came from the Vista Resource disk, some from the XPS210 drivers page, video card drivers from the manufacturer, and NIC from the internet using find drivers option. It feels like the system has doubled in speed and I’ve gained about 10 additional gigabytes in drive space over Vista. I’m a happy dude now BUT very disappointed in Dell for this deception. Still beats HP thought . . .

Higher Ranged Power Supplies For All Systems
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bundy88
Apr 11
Lets face it todays computers require much more juice then they used to, which is why standard power supplies just aren't cutting it anymore. From running better graphics and faster memory to top notch motherboards they all require more power consumption in order to run smooth. This is why I feel the new standard of power supplies should be at least a 550 watt or higher in all systems depending on the consumers requirements.

More Customization Options for XPS Sysytems
Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by bundy88

I have been a Dell customer for about eight year's now and have recently visited their website to possibly purchase an XPS 630, me being a game enthusiast and all. It looked like a well put together system and I know Dell build's very good computer's haveing owned a Demension 4600 for seven year's with little to no problems. Upon checking out the customization options for the system I realized they were lacking certain item's that would appeal to gamer's such as a motherboard selection, cpu fans and heatsinks, power supplies, more processor selections like the new q9300 quad, and other name brand memory like Corsair xms2, and Muskin xp2 extrme then just Dominator as the only memory with a heatsink. Also Nvidia has there new 9 series of video cards out on the market, I don't know why Dell wouldn't be offering them instead of the soon to be outdated 8 series.
Another area I fell I should cover before I wrap things up is the case itself. Dont get me wrong its very sharp and sexy I was just hoping for maybe a side window option that maybe wont cost an extra $200 like the 630's big brother the 720, come on Dell thats alittle ridiculous dont you think. Also you should have the option to add extra fans to the case if the buyer deemed necessary.
In conclusion people love having options to choose from and in the case of spending anywhere from $1,500 to alittle over $5,000 for a good gaming computer we want more choices than God himself.

Improve Dell Support to actually solve problems
Service and Support submitted by programatix
Apr 3
Most of the time when trying to get problem solved by contacting Dell Support, it seems like I almost end up without actually solved the problems.
It would be great if Dell spend more time to investigate each report and actually find a solution instead of the most favourite solution, "Therefore, it is advisable for you to reinstall the operating system of your computer."
The following are the examples the problem I've encountered which end up with the above solution
Problem #1 Media Direct button does not start Dell Media Direct in Vista. But if the laptop is turned off, pressing the Media Direct button boot the laptop to Media Direct OS.
I actually wonder what is required to make the Media Direct button function. Is it QuickSet? If it is so, why not spend some time to find the root cause and fix it? I believe at some point, some of us faced this problem. Is reinstalling the OS is the only solution?
Problem #2 After motherboard replacement, when the laptop is turned off, Media Direct button does not boot up the Media Direct OS.
This actually has a solution (after I experiment with the tools found in Media Direct CD). The RMBR.EXE actually sets what the buttons (Media Direct button and Power button). For example, if your OS is in Partition 2 and Media Direct is in Partition 4, you run this in CMD, RMBR DELL 2 4
But instead of informing this, Dell Support ask me to reinstall the OS starting with Media Direct Recovery.
Problem #3 Shuttering audio playback in Windows Media Player, even after upgrading Windows Vista to SP1.
After Dell Support blames Microsoft for the problem, he asked me to reinstall the OS.
But I believe the problem lies with the SigmaTel audio driver. With this driver, we can't even use the Vista Audio Enchancement features or we will get weird audio playback.

Dell EEE-alike - using VIA CN or ARM processors for exceptional (8+) battery life
New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by mandarinka
Mar 27
This has been suggested a number of times, but I would like to stress some points, that, in my opinion would make for a unique product.
1. The device must have better-than-laptop class battery life. That means 6 to 8 hours and more under normal (not full) load on a standard battery. The battery unit must be a quality one - it is supposed to retain a significant poriton of capacity over two or three years, not like the Asus/Acer "disposables" :)
2. 9"-10" LCD; Keep the borders tiny, the size of the device should stay as small as it can (size overshoot with small display is a blight of all the new lowend subnotebooks). LED backlight to reduce power draw.
3. Use a real lowpower CPU - the new and supposedly high-performance Via CN (Isaiah) comes to mind.
4. Alternatively, use an ARM core: this could lead to MUCH longer battery life (using laptop-class battery). Cortex-A9 (or Cortex-A9 MPCore) CPU could offer performance on par with lowend x86 CPUs.
5. The chipset of the computer should have some video processing unit integrated for low power usage (= long battery life) video playback. A mobile chip capable of this (aside of being an integrated GPU and ARM11 CPU) is nVidia APX 2500; supposedly able of playing 10hours of video from a cellphonne battery. It is also 720p resolution capable.
6. OS capability: Windows CE, WIndows mobile, or Linux (good choice: provides easy portabiltiy of open-spource applications).
The result would be PC class minilaptop suitable for work/browsing/entertainment/e-book reading etc... for extended period of time in schools, planes, trains, or generall on the go.

Give a choice of either Ati or Nvidia gpu's
Gaming, Desktops and Laptops submitted by theideasman

Everyone is a fanboy to one particular brand and prefers their products, so why do some desktops and a lot of laptops only have one option. There should be at least one Ati card and one Nvidia card available for each machine so people dont have to go for the brand they dont want. Its only fair...

BOYCOTT VISTA!
Operating Systems submitted by reg
03/21/07
Dell Dudes,
Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.
The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.
US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.
The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.
Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,
The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.
Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.
Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?
BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!
If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.
Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?
Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista.

Intel X38 Motherboard in an XPS 720
Desktops, Gaming, XPS products submitted by thomasp94
12/17/07
Create a new XPS 720 system (along side the existing configurations) with an Intel X38 chipset motherboard in it (like the one used in the new XPS 420). This would cater to those of us that have no interest in SLI but want the 720 style tower with Windows XP. The X38 motherboard will also support the new line of Intel processors due out in Q1 of 2008, where as the current Nvidia chipset boards will not.

Improve the web configuration - recommend based on what parts I desire
Dell, Dell Web Site submitted by clohman
Mar 11
The Dell Web Site is frustrating. I have a few very specific components in mind that I want in a computer, but the web site makes it difficult to find what I want.
I would like to see a configurator added to the website that allows me to choose components, and then tells me which systems can include those components.
For example: I tell it that I want: A dual core processor between 2.8 and 3.2 4 gigs of ram an nVidia gfx card with 512 ram a 10k rpm sata drive
The site responds with: The following systems can be configured to contain your desired components:
Optiplex xxx Precision xxx Inspiron xxx

Offer A Free Downgrade From Vista To XP
Operating Systems submitted by huper
04/24/07
I for one have had it with Windows Vista. I find this software so full of bugs that I am spending more time transferring log files to Microsoft than getting actual work done. They are certainly not paying me for my time to repair their flaky software! When I got my Dimension E520 it came loaded with a 2.8Ghz Duo Dual Core Intel Processor, 2GB of RAM, 256MB on an NVIDIA card & 2 - 250GB hard drives. Surely this system would be powerful & I could focus on writing & getting work done quickly. But no, the slow speed of this operating system taxes the hard drives & CPU so they are regularly running at 75% & 89%. I have tried changing the swap file to use a different drive, removed non essential services as well as swapping out memory from one slot to another. I have used every OS both client & server since DOS 1.0 & this is by far the worst! (Except maybe BOB or ME). Dell wants to give users an upgrade to Windows Vista within a certain time frame. How about offering a downgrade to XP for people who don't want Vista? Otherwise I will be checking into which Linux version will best run on this hardware. MCSE since 1996 & now an extremely disgruntled Windows Vista hostage! I will happily surrender my Windows Vista disk for one with XP it!!

IMPLEMENT the INTEL PENRYN 45nm Processor on Dell's Notebook and Desktop it require less power more performance NOW!!! Dell is behind from HP

Dell should start to sell notebook with Penryn processor because it require less power more performance T9500 6MB L2 2.60 GHz 800 MHz T9300 6MB L2 2.50 GHz 800 MHz T8300 3MB L2 2.40 GHz 800 MHz T8100 3MB L2 2.10 GHz 800 MHz specially on the XPS line etc... , well i hope DELL would not overcharge the consumers , dell can you sell this to us right now!!! for now it seems dell is falling behind again , well they have catchup with their design but somehow they fall behind with the power inside the laptop especially the penryn processors , dell hear us now implement the PENRYN processor , your behind from HP now , if you have gone to hp website and choose the dv9700t and dv6700t model you will see that HP is getting started about the Intel Penryn T9300 6MB L2 2.50 GHz as an option, , i dont know why DELL is Behind they should implement this now!!!

XPS 830 H2C (QX9650 + quad SLi) !
Desktops, Gaming, Sales Strategies submitted by zanlok
Mar 10
Do this again, Dell. Release a killer system with standard features and an awesome paintjob. Don't shunt (shun) serious gamers off into Alienware systems. Nvidia has enabled tri- and quad- SLi for a while now and still nothing. You've put SLi into notebooks - great. Now start maxing out SLi in the Desktops! Furthermore, don't make us trick out a base model with a low teaser price just to find out what a REAL rig will actually cost. Have a system actually starting at the $4,999 pricepoint with a great package starting at: • Penryn Extreme QX9650 • Standard 8800 GT quad SLi • 4GB RAM
It should really only be offered with Vista64 Ultimate because the addressable / available memory should be the full 4GB... and make available an option to upgrade to 8GB. Also offer an upgrade to quad GTX cards (and the 9800 GTX whenever that's available). Offering a motherboard with dual-proc abilities would be awesome, as well.

Upgrade ability for Desktops!
Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by ajmukon
Mar 6
Increase the upgradability (sp?) of all Desktop units.
Currently, the only upgrade options are RAM, HD, Video card (which is in itself low), and Disk drives.
allow us the option of upgrading our motherboard, cpu, PSU (if we get a larger video card), above, etc (if you can think of anymore, post a comment!)
