All hardware should be optional
Dell submitted by badblood
10/30/07
Ever stop to think when you decide to buy a new computer that there are parts on your old computer that still work and meet operational standards. Who has replaced a laptop with busted or outdated processor that still has a good screen or a good CD ROM.
Make all hardware components optional when configuring a new computer so we can keep old components that still work, like power supplies, screens, processors, modems, hard drives, etc.

Support Space Ship One
Dell submitted by badblood
10/31/07
Scaled Composites SpaceShipOne completed the first privately funded human spaceflight on June 21, 2004. SpaceShipOne was developed by Scaled Composites, Burt Rutan's aviation company, without government funding. On October 4, it won the $10-million Ansari X PRIZE, by reaching 100 kilometers in altitude twice in a two-week period with the equivalent of three people on board, with no more than ten percent of the non-fuel weight of the spacecraft replaced between flights. Development costs were estimated to be $25-million, funded completely by Paul Allen.
Developing the capability to escape the boundaries of our home planet is one of mankind’s most spectacular achievements and has enormous potential significance to the future of the human race. Already, our limited exploration of space has changed the way we live and think, from instant global communications to a better understanding of climate change. Space travel to date though has come at enormous expense, not just in financial terms but in its environmental impact and the personal safety of those involved.
Dell should recognise that private sector innovation is often the key to radical improvement. Dell needs to improve its history of promoting and investing in breakthrough technologies.
Dell should acknowledge that it is in mankind’s interest to develop our knowledge and understanding as well as our access to space. For this reason Dell should undertake to support the development and commercialization of this completely new approach to manned space travel - made possible by Burt Rutan and SpaceShipOne. In doing so, Dell will enable many thousands of people across the world to experience space for themselves and help to unlock the potential benefits that will come from safe and affordable manned space access.

Canadian prices should be brought down to USA's.
Sales Strategies submitted by impulse
10/17/07
The Canadian dollar is virtually on par with the American dollar, and it's going to be this way for quite a while . So how come we Canadians have to pay sometimes up to 30% more for the same system?
I think Dell should give us a break and maybe lower the prices a bit. And if they can't do that, they should at the very least give us better coupons. Right now the US has $325-$425 off coupons on Inspiron notebooks but Canada only has two coupons for the same systems, a $50 and a $100 off coupon.

Ubuntu on all models where it works
Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl
08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.
Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft. We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Make notebooks so you can up date more than jest memory in them like video cards like a desk top computer and for the older pcs make a video card that works in the express slot. We see games and software demanding more and more but with a notebook your jest stuck with what you buy.

Printer Driver Downloads
Dell Web Site, Printers and Ink, Service and Support submitted by gdborenstein
10/18/07
The Dell printer drivers from the support site prompts you for a download of the full CD in a self-extracting .exe file. However, the printers also have drivers for non-Windows operating systems which cannot run a Windows executable to get their drivers, entailing the use of an additional Windows-based machine. While access to a Windows machine to run the program is generally common, it does seem a bit of an imposition to have to find a separate machine to extract a full CD for a small driver that's supported by the printer.
Would it be possible to get just the individual drivers listed for download on the website, or at least make the current CD file available in a .zip or similarly universal format?

Unified search engine for Dell sites
Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961
10/21/07
I finally got a chance to watch Michael Dell's interview with Jeff Jarvis and also the interview of Jeff Jarvis by Lionel on Direct2Dell today. Both can be found here. http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/10/18/31956.aspx
The interview with Michael Dell was interesting to watch as he talked about IdeaStorm, Direct2Dell and how they are helping change the way the customer interacts with the company. I did though think that the interview with Jeff Jarvis by Lionel was much more interesting. Jeff talked more about what the next step could be and they discussed consolidating the community sites like we have discussed here. They agreed that more needed to be done to gel the sites together and make it easier for the customer to interact. For some reason it sparked an idea in my head about a new search engine (maybe because they kept mentioning Google but who knows).
Currently you can do a search on any of the Dell Websites but they don't really give the complete picture of everything across the board. The main site links to support articles, products, forum posts and such as they are all on the main site. Direct2Dell gives blog posts and StudioDell gives videos based on your search.
Dell should create a universal search that lists results from all the sites to give the customer the most complete information and options available from Dell. Show the customer links for products, support, reviews, blog posts, press releases, recalls, forums threads, video and ideas from ideastorm. Let the customer see a preview of the link or open it in a picture in picture mode so they can explore without losing the search and get a better idea of all that Dell has to offer. I think people would be surprised with some of the things Dell has done, is doing or could impliment. I also think Dell could be surprised with the reaction of the customer as they are introduced to the whole Dell community.
Maybe the customer will post a new idea on IdeaStorm, ask for advice on the forums, read the customer reviews and maybe even buy a product feeling that not only does Dell offer a wealth of information but that they support their customer's wants and needs after teh sale as well.

Dell focus groups for ideas under consideration
IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961
10/18/07
When Dell finds an idea that it feels needs further investigation they should create a focus group to gather more information from us.
One option is the Dell Forums has the ability to create a specialized forum that only certain users can access when given permission. This would allow Dell to talk to people under a NDA (non disclosure agreement) which would protect Dell so they can be more open with the group. Every idea they speak about could have a different set of members to get more people involved if they wanted.
Another option is to use a different site or a special access portion of IdeaStorm. I don't think the software has the capability to create a subsection but who knows. The site does have 2 names though dellIdeastorm and ideastorm so perhaps make one site special access and the other full access. NDA would be needed for each participating member of course.
I'm just looking for a way for us to better interact with Dell that they feel comfortable with. Feel free to leave comments with what you would like to see happen or even nominate users you feel would be appropriate for focus groups.

Dell needs to service the customer wherever they FIND her (or him)
Service and Support submitted by phubert
10/18/07
Recently, a participant here complained about a customer service issue that would cause him and his company to take their $half million business elsewhere.
One of the dell_admin's responded well enough but for the remark "this isn't the place for this".
I know that wasn't -meant- badly, but it DOES provide an illustration (and it's also why I've asked for a "customer service" -category- in IdeaStorm):
EVERY Dell employee, like the assembly line worker at Saturn, should be able to "stop the assembly line".
Meaning, they should be able to communicate a customer problem to the RIGHT place no matter what -their- position is in the company.

Work with Canonical to make Ubuntu upgrades smoother.
Linux submitted by jmxz
10/23/07
I just upgraded my E1505N to the newest Ubuntu that was released earlier this month; and was disappointed that it did not go flawlessly.
In particular, it "forgot" that my screen is capable of a 1680x1050. Also surprising that all the xwindows setup programs I tried see the E1505N as having a "Generic Monitor" with an unknown resolution. Since you're working with the Ubuntu vendor directly, it seems you could have worked with them to make the upgrade process correctly identify your hardware.
While it was easy enough for me to run the command line program "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to get my correct resolution back; this wouldn't be obvious to the novice user.
Idea: Already said it above, but: Since you're working with the Ubuntu vendor directly, it seems you could have worked with them to make the upgrade process correctly identify your hardware.

Bring back Matte desktop case finishes
Desktops submitted by dave-2
10/16/07
To my surprise, the Vostro 400 I recently purchased arrived with a glossy black paint job on the case, complete with plastic tear-off sheets for protection. While some people might want computers that look like sports cars, I prefer my appliances to be low maintenance. The glossy paint is horrible in showing fingerprints, footprints :-), and all other evidence that the machine is actually being used.
Please return to nice matte finishes like the ones on the old Dimension 3100 and 4700, or at least offer the option of ordering systems with a matte paint job.

Hardware configurator--specify hardware options and receive a list of laptops or desktops matching your query...
Dell Web Site submitted by enigma_0z
10/19/07
One thing that I find myself doing is configuring multiple Dell computers on the website to price-compare. If there was a tool that I could input some specifications (ex: laptop, 15.4 widescreen, 2.0 GHZ Duo, 3GB of ram) and then get a list of all computers that can be configured like that, it would be alot simpler to decide on a computer.
Here's how I would like it to work. You specify certain requirements for a computer (any of OS, CPU, GFX card, Display, Bluetooth, Wireless, RAM, et cetera).
The list that then comes back has the unconfigured options on each laptop, as well as the base price matching your configuration. You could then configure each one to whatever you would like and compare all the prices quickly and efficiently.

Removing an option in the Ubuntu order process.
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by devlin
10/14/07
I was on the configuration page for the Dell Inspiron Desktop 530 N (the Ubuntu desktop) when I noticed two things that while one was just annoying the other was just plain stupid.
1. The just plain annoying one was the banner at the top of the page where I'm configuring a LINUX system saying "Dell recommends Windows Vista® Home Premium."
2. The stupid one..... Okay now Dell took the Wine (Windows compatibility app) out of the Ubuntu they are pre-installing. The stupid thing is in the configuration area for the UBUNTU LINUX desktop they are offering to sell you Quicken Home & Business a *Windows* ONLY application!
Either leave the Wine app in or keep the Windows software out of the things you are trying to sell us when we are configuring NON-Windows systems.

Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux
Dell, Linux submitted by phubert
10/10/07 **REVIEWED**
An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times.
The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!
Our current priority is to expand Linux availability by bringing more platforms and languages to market. Read what daniel_j has to say.
