Stealth Mode for XPS laptops

XPS products submitted by jhaber Jun 10

I think it would be nice if the next XPS notebooks included an integrated graphics card that can be switched to, along with a Stealth mode that can be switched to (like your newest Alienware line). These modes would really increase the battery. The m15x gets 2:30 on a six cell... I think that you guys can do a lot better with the XPS line. 2 Comments »

Dell should buy AMD.

Dell submitted by drewness Jun 7

Dell Should buy AMD and offer AMD chips on most systems. Limit Intel offerings or eliminate them entirely. I just read today that the FTC opened a formal investigation into Intel sales tactics. We know how it works- Microsoft and Intel threaten the PC makers with loss of discounts if they don't play by Microsoft & Intel rules. Very uncool bullying tactics! 25 Comments »

Fix the search function on IdeaStorm (major glitch found)

IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 May 26 **IMPLEMENTED**

The seach function here has been lousy for a while now but today I found a new glitch. I was looking to post a comment in an idea about adding solar cells to devices since Apple has now filed a patent. http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/26/apple-files-patent-for-solar-cells-on-port...

Anyway, when I did a search on the word "solar" it showed the same ideas several times. I don't know if it is showing a different link for each idea merged into the origional or based on the number of pages of comments but it should only have one link per idea. 23 Comments »

HDMI/DVI input on HD laptops.

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by impulse May 10

It's great that Dell offers HDMI and DVI-D outputs on their XPS laptops, but is it possible to add HDMI and DVI inputs as well?

For those that already have a Blu-ray player or Playstation 3, it kind of stinks that we can't take advantage of the 1080p capable screens that Dell offers on the M1530 and M1730.

I think being able to use the HD screen available on at least the M1730 as a monitor for consoles or Blu-ray players would be a great idea, as it would save people such as myself from having to buy an external monitor or new TV. 6 Comments »

XPS Laptop Dual Cooling

XPS products, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by funeagle Apr 27

1) Keep the internal fan for standard cooling when carrying the laptop around.

2) Allow the user to select a dual cooling (water plugs) as an option when configuring the laptop.

3) Hide the two water plugs inside the notebook like on the image bellow:

The user can:
1) Plug in the waterpipes when using it for extensive period at home
2) Pull out the waterpipes when moving the notebook

This way the users will be able to disperse the heat when using the laptop at home using powerful and yet affordable cooling to make the laptop enjoyably silent. Imagine a silent laptop with a reserator like on the picture bellow:

New Inspiron / Laptop Keyboards that do not "Catch" fingers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by gear Apr 18

The Inspiron 1525's keyboard (which is standard across the Dell Laptop line - I believe - has a terrible problem.

The low profile keys have a tendency of "catching" fingers If you should depress the key at the edge close enough to touch the edge of the next (not depressed) key.

If you have big fingers, this problem gets more serious.

The old Dell 8600 I had had the same flaw which can cause key caps to be detached if they happen to "catch" my finger.

What is needed is to redesign the keyboard, increasing the key's side skirt depth (even if it increases the profile of the keyboard slightly) to prevent this "catching".

A even better idea is to offer replacement keyboards that have different feels to them, ranging from tactile keyboards with or without a "click", to ones that are "hard" vs. "soft" feel.

Finally, the silver color of the Inspiron 1525 keyboard has another annoying flaw, which is it reflects and causes glares if used in bright lights.

Can you make the keyboard in different colors that do not reflect as much light? 1 Comment »

Built in/ Express card GPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by visiocloud 10/07/07

I love having GPS on my computer but it would be nice not to have to deal with all the wire, I think an express card or an internal gps option would be awesome. 29 Comments »

Allow Under 18s To Post On IdeaStorm

Dell Community, IdeaStorm, Simplify IT submitted by aikiwolfie Mar 30

Recently there has been some discussion over on Dell Forums about under 18s not being allowed to post on IdeaStorm. While I am aware there are legal obligations Dell must meet to accommodate children of certain age groups. I think Dell are being overly paranoid in this matter.

COPPA so far as I know applies to children under the age of 13. So I'm just not sure what the issue is here? Perhaps one of the moderators can explain things to us as this new policy has seen the exclusion of some of IdeaStorms most valuable members, davmcn and citreontech. Both of whom have acted very responsibly while posting on IdeaStorm.

Simplify IT

Recently Dell has also made a big deal about simplifying IT. Well where XPS gaming rigs are concerned, wouldn't it be simpler to talk to "kids" directly rather than having to go through their parents? From what I've read on IdeaStorm with examples like "Joe Sixpack" and "Mon & Pop", the general American adult population seem to be a bit thick when it comes to using and understanding PCs. That's not meant to be an insult. It's just how it looks from the outside looking in.

I think you might need the "kids" input after all. Drop the age limit to 13. 12 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Next-Gen XPS For 2008 (8xx?)

XPS products submitted by doomlord52 Mar 27

Ok, now that we have the Nvidia 790i motherboard, the 9800GX2, and support for 8GB of RAM, Dell should really consider making a truely "next-gen" computer for 2008.

The 9800GX2 is priced at around $550, as the price dropped $50 within the first week of release. This means that you could get 2x 9800GX2 cards for about the same price as 2x or 3x 8800 Ultra's.

To accomidate the new graphics card, i would equip the XPS 8xx series with a 1500w PSU (offer up the 2Kw or more as option).

It would also be possible to advertise this as the "only rig made for Crysis", as a quad core, 8GB of RAM and 2x 9800GX2's are about the only thing that can run Crysis at max settings at a reasonable resolution. Comment »

Project Red

XPS products submitted by yhart01 Mar 21

Just a week after I purchased my XPS, Dell introduced the Project Red computers. I would sure appreciate the opportunity to be able to purchase the screensavers and software additions that are part of Red. Is there a possibility you could make that available? 11 Comments »

Windows XP and Blu-Ray on XPS m1730

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by houdini Mar 21

I am buying an XPS m1730 in a few weeks and whilst going through all the options on the Dell "customize your laptop" page I was very disappointed to see that I could only order a blu-ray optical drive with Windows Vista and not XP. This is a shame as I don't want Vista, but I want blu-ray. At first I thought it was because XP doesn't support blu-ray, but upon further investigation I came across this forum (located at end of post).

You need to ensure that if a customer is willing to spend $5k + on one of your machines then you should include all possible options available. For example you could say that if a customer wanted to have a blu-ray drive with a XP O/S then they would need to buy Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra to get the full use out of it, or you could just bundle it in a package package

Add Blue-Ray To All Desktops And Laptops

Merged ideas should redirect to the ideas into which they were merged!

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice Mar 23

Currently if I post an idea and it gets merged, I usually have no idea what idea it got merged into. What if someone follows a link to an idea of mine, only to see "Article not found" because it was merged? People should be able to know whether the idea was just deleted or merged instead, and if so into what idea. Also I might want to check if my idea was really a duplicate of the idea into which it got merged, or if not, which might mean that I might repost it.

At the very least revise the "Article not found" for such ideas to "Article was a duplicate of (such and such idea; do not forget to provide the link) and thus was merged into it." 2 Comments »

Offer CPU and GPU choices in ALL products.

Desktops and Laptops submitted by ah1f Mar 20

DELL should offer all of it's prroduct lines with choices. Each system should offer AMD or Intel CPU's. Each system should also be offered with ATI or NVIDIA GPU's.
This is as easy as an AMD and Intel mother board for each line.

For notebooks the video cards would not be integrated, but would be separate and upgradeable, using the same plug or slot format for both the ATI and NVIDIA GPU's.

Notebook upgradeabilty can be as easy as one standard plug or slot. even if the cards are propriatary as the current DELL offerings are the customer would have choices available now and in the future as GPU's improve. 9 Comments »
