Demote Ideas (Vote Negative)

I've seen some some pretty bad ideas here. It'd be nice to be able to vote against some of them. 12 Comments »

Numeric Keypad on Notebooks

Laptops submitted by tpjoseph 02/21/07

Since notebooks are larger and have plenty of unused space below the keyboard and to the right of the touchpad, can we make a few models with a numeric keypad?

There are probably a HUGE number of engineers, accountants, analysts that would be FAR better served by this addition. The top row of number is nowhere near as efficient as a numeric keypad.

As soon as this feature becomes available, send me an email and I will buy my next Dell notebook.

Thanks. 1 Comment »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

No matter what Dell does, unless they bring support back home they will fail.

Service and Support submitted by icantseeyou 02/21/07

The simple fact is this...

Years ago we were willing to pay for a computer that didn't look the best and may not have been the best because the support was unbelievably great.

When you have something with the complexity of a computer you need technicians who know what they are doing.

Get rid of the overseas call centers. I don't care what it costs - this company will fail unless the fanatical support comes back.

If Dell announced that all US customer support would be answered and handled in the US, I would become a loyal customer again. 1 Comment »

3 Years of Warranty Free

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by kartikanand 02/21/07

Dell,

If you believe your computers are the best of the best, then I really challenge you to give your customers 3 years of warranty for no additional cost. This would say a lot about your own confidence in your products!!! This would bring unbelievable number of customers.

Last year, I planned to purchase a new laptop, I decided on 1 simple things i.e. not to purchase DELL. This is because I have heard so many complaints about the laptop manufactured by DELL breaking after 13-14 months.

Get rid of all the one-off promos

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by mrdisco 02/21/07

Nearly everywhere I look there is a custom Dell package being offered with a unique promo code. Whether its on tv with the home shopping network, local newspapers, or online, there are far too many promos. Why not simply focus on offering the best pricing online for all customers? Comment »

Higher screen resolution options with laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by rdoorn 02/22/07

Laptops should have more options in screen resolutions.
Latitude D620 1280 x 800 resolution 1440 X 900 resolution
That is 800 pixels, Not much when you look at your photos from you digicam.
7 megapixel = 3072 x 2304 so you can only see 30% of a picture. 2 Comments »

Stop counting votes in 10s

IdeaStorm submitted by conficio 02/22/07

Don't count votes in 10s on ideastorm.

This is highly useless and unethical. It looks like a proposal got 10 votes, and it only is you yourself that wrote it. 2 Comments »

Offer individual parts for sale on Dell.com at competative prices

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by jbonefx 02/22/07

Some of us enjoy building our own computers, but part hunting becomes hit or miss on availability, quality and warranty. Why doesn't Dell step up and become the first large computer manufacturing to cater to this audience? I trust Dell more so than places like hardwarecheapasfree.com so why not take advantage of offering parts for either a whole computer build or upgrades to compete in the market? Comment »

Set Dell Free

Operating Systems, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mac 02/22/07

I recently purchased an Inspiron 6400 because it was the best deal that I could find that met my specs after long searching. I was so offended by the Dell site with all its tricksy stuff and usurious rates that I tried hard to find an equal deal with another brand. After I got the laptop, which is, as expected, a fine piece of equipment, I was again dismayed by all the preloaded crap and malware/spyware that Dell had loaded on the machine. Now, months later it is still impacting my machine and my appreciation of Dell. How difficult can it be to understand that I want a clean machine with my choice of operating systems? In the past Dell was a ground breaking company that was known for being customer friendly. It seems to me that there are far to many lawyers and MBA's there trying to maximise profits, and to few people who recognize that you are only as good as you treat your customers. Comment »

Stepped support for advanced users

Service and Support submitted by ashearer 02/22/07

I think Dell should be the first that I am aware of to offer customer support for advanced users direct without having to go through all the layers of support people reading from scripts. In other words, when I call for support, I might have a number or some kind of identifier that would immediately escalate me to a higher level of technician. I know what I'm doing. Occasionally, I run into a problem I can't resolve or have a question. It's annoying to have to listen to the support person walk me through the standard steps that I have already done. Imagine, you're an advanced or even intermediate user. You're trying to troubleshoot a problem with email. You call Dell support and the representative starts with the familiar: "do you see the Start button, click on that" etc. etc.

I would be glad to take an online screening or whatever to establish myself as an advanced user. This may be available for IT pros, but there are a lot of advanced home/home office users out there.

Fix your broken sales phone tree

Service and Support submitted by sheridanw 02/22/07

Your inefficient sales channel routing system is driving me CRAZY. If a dedicated sales person in Texas is unavailable, just say so. Routing folks to India to waste 10 or 15 minutes does nothing but frustrate people.

Example: A week after trying to buy a server, I am still frustrated mostly due to INDIA. Dell is spending millions in India and the result is frustration, anger, and lost sales. Seems like a good place to whack away waste and inefficiency to me!

Support your small business and enterprise users better. Comment »

DVI (incl. DVI-D) for _everything_ please

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by pstader 02/20/07

Too bad our purchasing missed to order the DVI Riser Card with our Optiplex. The guy who ordered extra picked Ultrasharp Displays with DVI input, which we have to use via the analog connection. No warning, no nothing during the order process. Why even sell computers without DVI ? Analog connections might have been alright for everything up to 1024 * 768 resolutions but everything above that really benefits a lot from dvi. So please. Make DVI standard and not optional. Would love to see Notebooks with Dvi connector too. 4 Comments »

Better Notebook sound and features

Laptops submitted by foxx 02/17/07

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.

Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.
