New XPS sytem to compete with the HP Blackbird

Gaming, XPS products submitted by jediwill71 12/18/07

https://h20435.www2.hp.com/Default.aspx< a look at this beast. I know dell can make an XPS system that can compete with the same varity and amount of options and within the same price range. I know Dell has the XPS 700 series but not with the same amount of options for upgrades. 15 Comments »

Include Ubuntu as option for the Vostro line

Linux, Small Business, Vostro products submitted by jgjones 12/18/07

The Vostro line is a popular choice for small businesses because of its very very low cost (I use this for the business that I work for for example, and it's a small but rapidly growing business).

I want to see an option to pick Ubuntu (or other supported Linux distro, in my case I use Ubuntu) instead of just Windows XP or Vista.

Small businesses are interested in minimising cost, and trying to minimise the cost to just Linux allows me to save plenty for the business (it's not just the OS cost to save on, but there's the anti-virus, office suites, databases etc etc that all need to be gotten for each PC. For a Windows product that's expensive, for Ubuntu...it already comes with OpenOffice and doesn't require any antivirus etc - this is a huge cost saving for a small business that's trying to meet costs.

Summary - Please include Ubuntu (or other distro) as an option of OS for the Vostro range of PC's/Laptops.

Temperature Sensors on XPS Motherboards

XPS products submitted by thomasp94 12/17/07

Temperature and fan speed sensors should be a standard feature on ALL XPS motherboards. And we should be able to monitor them using any sensor program, not just in the bios or with a Dell specific program. 1 Comment »

AVG Free Anti-Virus for life (Windows Users)

Operating Systems, Software submitted by rlakes 12/17/07

For Windows users, Dell must give their costumers a plus to compete against Mac. Always updated free anti-virus and anti-spyware like AVG for life! I think AVG is the option rather than Norton or Mc Afee beceuse it is very light and every day have new updates. AVG didn't affect the performance of the PC's like other Anti-Virus do. 11 Comments »

Solid State Drives as Default Option

submitted by chrislaurence 12/17/07

After the holiday season, Dell ought to get out of the price wars and start selling computers that actually move technology forward. Solid state drives should become the standard drive option on all Dell computers. 4 Comments »

Go back to the old design of media buttons on Inspiron laptops

Inspiron products submitted by cp 12/18/07

The media buttons on the new Inspiron laptops are small and all lined up together with no space between them. The old ones (like on the Inspiron 9300) were large and round with gaps between them so that you could feel what you were pressing before you pressed it. Why change things just for the sake of change when it ends up with a worse result for the user? 1 Comment »

Inspirons Need Selectable USB Boot Device Menu

Inspiron products submitted by alfredska 12/15/07

The BIOS on Inspiron notebooks allows us to select:
Hard Drive, CD/DVD Drive, Network, USB

We need the BIOS to go further and actually let us select which USB device we need to boot. This applies to the boot menu that appears when F12 is pressed during startup. After the BIOS has gone through and detected hardware, it should be able to report which devices are connected to USB and give the option to select which particular one should be booted. 3 Comments »

Make notebook keyboards more intuitive

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by hornysax 12/16/07

I currently use a 12.1" 700m laptop. I recently purchased an Inspiron 1420 which I am currently in the process of returning.

A big part of why I am returning the 1420 is due to the keyboard layout, which aligns the DELETE, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, HOME, and END keys vertically. This is a very unintuitive setup to any power user who has learned to type on a full keyboard.

The reason I mention the 700m - its keyboard aligns the HOME, END, INSERT, and DELETE keys along the upper-right. In doing this, typing these keys motions comparable to typing on a regular PC keyboard, and is thus much more intuitive.

Can we offer custom keyboard layouts for laptops? Particularly one that has HOME, END, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, DELETE in the upper-right row? Comment »

Option to disable the bright blue LED indicator lights on Inspiron Notebooks

submitted by hornysax 12/16/07

I am currently returning a 1420 laptop I recently purchased. The reason is because the blue LED indicator lights on the front of the laptop are too bright. I have color blindness, and my eyes may have heightened sensitivity to color contrast.

I would like accurate representaton of the LED indicator lights on your laptop brands, or an option to turn these off or reduce the brightness on them. I don't purchase any electronics that use blue LED lights.

I also currently own a 700m. The lights are a faint green, and very tame. 1 Comment »

High resolution screen and new video card (DirectX 10) on XPS M1330

XPS products submitted by sentron 12/17/07

XPS M1330 is among the best laptops currently available from any manufacturer. It will be the best if Dell improves the video features on this laptop. The model is good eye candy from the outside, but it will be good eye candy from the inside if you add these features:

Please introduce a new model with the choice of:

1. High resolution screen (WXGA+ or WSXGA+)
2. Video card with DirectX 10 support. As a Linux user, I prefer nVidia than ATI.
3. Webcam in these high resolution models, preferably 2 megapixels or higher
4. Choice of LCD or regular backlight. 1 Comment »

New Moderator?

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 12/17/07

It is hard to say this but the moderation of this site has become intermittent at best and disorganized at worst. Ideas are being merged into completely different ideas, ideas are deleted with impunity, abuse is reported and little action taken, status updates are all over the place, site updates take place with little oversight. What's more supplementary moderators aren't correctly trained and act without due supervision.

The primary moderator is clearly involved in things that don't really involve moderating this site, but selling the ideas on this site.

It's time for the moderation function to be split from the idea liaison/advocacy function. I think dell_admin1 prefers getting the ideas implemented than moderating.

So maybe it is time for a new moderator.....

promote if you think we need a new moderator, demote if you are OK with current arrangements. 50 Comments »

Dell should offer the XPS m1330 with a 14.1 inch screen

XPS products submitted by bigkris 12/17/07

How about offering the XPS m1330 with a 14.1 inch screen, by increasing the width of the chassis with half an inch or so? 4 Comments »

Using Quality OEM's

Dell submitted by falcon1620 07/31/07

Here is my radical idea…Instead of continuing the contract with Foxconn and Mitec, instead search for quality OEM manufactures for your products. There are lots of them out there, Asus for example is a good start, MSI also has good products, Intel makes awesome motherboards, and many other companies make just solid products. It doesn’t have to be them most expensive, it doesn’t have to be the top of the line, just something with a little more planning and testing before throwing it onto the production line. Foxconn has come a long way, and Mitec well they fell off the face of the earth in the industry… Still none of these OEM’s are anywhere close to “getting it right”… Have some sense of quality for your components. I’ve had so many unnecessary recalls on products that I have worked with from Dell exclusively, cooling options are poorly planned out so machines overheat and cause problems and noise, fans are cheep and the bearings die prematurely, hardware is flawed, capacitors are the wrong value or rating, power supplies blow, causing fires in datacenters, resistors were incorrectly valued on motherboards, screens die prematurely, hard drives overheat and die. Recalls on components have been made on more then one occasion on the wrong problem or similar problems on the same areas failed, but were “to expensive to replace” I had a Dell 486 from my friend that they replace the hard drive, because it would die, the real problem was with the loose connection on the Delta power supply, they had recalled similar power supply models on other manufactures because of the same problem with them, the molex connectors snapped in splicing onto the wires, then a connector would snap into place on top of that, Dell mistakes this for a failed hard drive when it was actually just the Molex connectors shorting out cutting power to the drive… I fixed that problem long after a new hard drive was ordered, and my friends response was gee I always wondered why I kept having problems even after I went though all that trouble with them to replace the drive… 1 Comment »

Outstanding Marketing

Advertising and Marketing submitted by robert 07/31/07

I had to post this ad again because it is exceptional!!

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/popup_xps_comm_big?c=us&cs=1...

Muscle car, "American" engine (note the standard, not metric wrenches), power, good looking girls, ready to rock and roll. Anyone who understands the need for speed, power, and good looking women has to own an XPS. Dell delivers a hot product, super-charged with Intel! Great stuff! Run this ad at the Super Bowl, World Series, Nascar or how about any night of the week. I asked my different family members what they thought, and all said it was very effective. That means, business owners, thought it worked well. Nice job!

Discrete audio solutions

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lordxale 07/31/07

For the audio geeks among us, wouldn't it be nice if there were some good discrete audio solutions available? Obviously the Audigy Software Edition doesn't even count, and the X-Fi Extreme Music is a really wimpy chip for the high price currently charged ($100 on an XPS 410).

I'm sure Auzentech, M-Audio, or other vendors offering alternative (and mostly better) cards other than Creative would love to get their cards bundled with OEM machines from the likes of companies like Dell. If there were ever a Dell HTPC, I would think discrete audio would be an inevitable addition to it: Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect are great, and Vista Drivers for Auzentech boards are available according to http://www.auzentech.com/site/support/FAQ.php#compatibility . There are other cards/manufacturers who offer DDL, but I'm unfamiliar with them.

Unfortunately, there is limited Linux support for Auzentech cards (No DTS/DDL), but other boards (Chaintech AV-710) work well at bargain basement prices.

Even without a Dell HTPC on the market, I still think if the price was right, discrete audio would sell well. Come on audiophiles, I know you're out there! 1 Comment »

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Make Highly Popular type desktops

Desktops submitted by officeglen 08/01/07

I will be buying a Highly Popular desktop later this week. Given 4 out of 5 computers in the house are Dell, I’m sorry to be making the switch. Still I can’t get any Dell remotely close to this: $1.4K (without monitor), Q6600, 3G, Vista Ultimate, 1066 FSB, 256 8400 GS, HD DVD. If somebody knows how to do this on Dell, perhaps with some coupon code or the like, please post it here.

To me, it looks like Dell is somewhat non-competitive in the 1 to 2K home segment – in years before Dell was the leader in price/quality here. 15 Comments »
