Don't install MediaDirect on new notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by rq Jul 11

I bought a new Inspiron lately, and found an application named DELL MediaDirect installed on it. I suggest to ship without it (at least without its "embedded" version) anymore though, because:

1) The "embedded" version is installed in a separate partition, which boots Windows XP Embedded, which, according to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/products/wexpe/default.mspx , costs DELL $90 per shipped unit, thus, increasing price of the laptop.

2) The MediaDirect, which is installed as an application in Vista, starts when certain combinations employing AltGr are used, thus interrupting the work user is performing (this is actually a bug in that software). This makes typing in Lithuanian trully annoying, and probably affects other keyboard layouts too.

3) The "embedded" MediaDirect can't play many movies (presumably because of the lack of codecs), so again, it's quite useless.

4) Vista wakes up from sleep just as quickly as "embedded" MediaDirect starts. No point for it, again. 10 Comments »

Laptop removable Harddrive

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by robertfischer Jul 29

Today (Tuesday , July 29 2008) a report was published regarding losing laptops on Airports, Worldwide weekly over 15.000 laptops, as a matter Dell was involved in this research. I suggest to have easy removable hard-drive, not funny if your laptop is gone but atleast you still have all your data. Simple and Easy. 5 Comments »

Choice of the graphic card

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by enibas Jul 31

For the XPS M1530, we can't chose a graphic card other than 8600 mGT. I think it could me good, given that this card as a default of made, we have the choice to take a 8700 mGT or 8800 mGT.

What do you think about it? Do you agree with me?

Include Matte Sunfilter for Glossy-Screen Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by tigerforce Apr 17 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Many people (including me) love Dell's high resolution, high contrast glossy laptop displays. However they can become annoyingly unusable under harsh sun or florescent lighting. It would be nice if Dell included an optional filter that could be attached to the screen to block glare. I think more people would get the High-Def screens if Dell did this. (I'm thinking of something similar to this http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/ComputerFilter/Home/ only with a matte anti-glare coating).

OEM Win XP Drivers for VISTA only computers

Operating Systems submitted by calvindoth Jul 31

Dell should make OEM Windows XP drivers available for all Vista only computers, with the stipulation that Dell does not support Windows XP on these systems. To get any Warranty or Support the customer must have a Dell Diagnostic code if Windows XP is on the computer. 3 Comments »

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Video Card Options

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by kenbanas Jul 29

Dell should provide us with the option of choosing between different video cards.

For instance, in the Studio 15, the only option is an ATI 3450. Why can't I have an Nvidia 8400 gs, or an 8600 gt, or an ATI 3650.

On the XPS series, why aren't ATI cards available.

This seems easy enough to implement and some people have preferences of one company over the other or one level of card over another. 2 Comments »

Glow in the dark letters

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by badblood Jul 14

There's lots of ideas here for a back lit keyboard or for little lamps to shine on the keyboards of laptops, so that we can use our computers int he dark. Proble is, both of these can contribute to battery drain.

So why not put glow in the dark letters on the keyboard. Illumination from the screen should be enough to keep them bright and easy to see.

Linux on Studio Hybrid

Desktops, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by meltingrobot Jul 29

I am a Linux person that is a big fan of smaller/tiny desktop solutions. I really like the look of the Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop. It would be an extra plus if I could get one without Windows though. I have been using a Mac Mini for a couple of years now as my desktop in my bedroom for its size and quietness, but I would love to replace it with somebody that officially supports my OS of choice. Plus, the Hybrid looks better in my opinion. 4 Comments »

What's in a name...?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by anji Jul 31

Everything! And if Dell wants to push sales for their MP3 players, or any other small handheld, they need to get with the times. DJ Ditty? Is this supposed to appeal to the young-ish crowd that is the main purchaser of such things? Nope. I say, hold a contest, open to the public, of course; and give some of the products away as an incentive for the best name(s). Who better to name a product than those who use them? 4 Comments »

Become the open source OEM

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

IdeaStorm should be using Webstorm software

IdeaStorm, Software submitted by jervis961 Jul 30 **REVIEWED**

is a idea platform from Brightidea.com that like the current software used here allows a user to: post ideas, vote on ideas, and comment on ideas. The major difference is that Webstorm software has much better user features that we have been asking for since this site launched.

Wouldn't you like to be able to change your vote on an idea or even remove your vote altogether? How about editing tools when you are posting an idea? User profiles where you can post your credentials? Send a private message to another user?

Check out this site that uses the software and see what we are missing out on. http://tinyurl.com/6xrnt5

Quad core processors in laptops

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by dellrox Jul 19

I think that putting the quad cores in a laoptop would be great for Dell. You would revolutionize the lapto sales, as you would be the first to do it. Desktops have htem and they will be mainstream very shortly. Why not make them in laptops? Please look into this. 10 Comments »

Mini Desktops Need Better Specs!

Desktops, Gaming, Linux submitted by aikiwolfie Jul 29

Okay! 5400RPM hard drives on a desktop? Intel only video? Such a shame. The mini Studio Hybrid desktops look pretty cool! But the specs are going to let people down. Plug a TV tuner into one of those USB ports and you have the perfect PVR. It even has HDMI!

Does Dell deliberately set out to get us excited and then disappoint? You're always stopping short! Upgrade these ridiculous specs! And consign the Celeron CPU range to history where it belongs!

It wouldn't hurt to give us a Ubuntu option would it? 7 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on sale at the same time as Windows (unfair to Ubuntu sales count if we install it afterwords)

Advertising and Marketing submitted by brett_alton Jun 26

I'm pretty frustrated to receive a flyer with a Inspiron 1525 laptop on sale for $599 while the Ubuntu laptop with the same specs are $699.

Why is this frustrating you ask? Why don't you just buy the $599 laptop, wipe it and put Ubuntu on it you say?

Well, I can easily purchase the $599 laptop, wipe Windows off and put Ubuntu on but there are two problems with that:

1) I don't get Dell's support for Ubuntu Linux
2) Dell doesn't see what I do with my PC after I purchase it, thus, they don't know that they actually sold an Ubuntu laptop. This means that it is one more Windows laptop sold over a Ubuntu laptop. Why is this important?

Well, apparently a few weeks after supporting Ubuntu, Dell sold 40,000 Ubuntu-based laptops. It is finally my turn to purchase one, but I want to be added to that count so that Dell knows I'm buying an Ubuntu-based laptop. Why is this important?

I want Dell to continue selling Ubuntu-based laptops, so I think it would be in the Linux communities and Dell's best interest to offer the same deals on Ubuntu laptops as Windows laptops.

I don't want Windows Vista and I don't want you to think I want Windows Vista. I want Ubuntu, but I want to pay the same price as the other guys. 9 Comments »
