Give the people choice of CPU's to use in your Ubuntu Line. I want to buy one but I don't use Intel CPU's becasue they suck up power and that is why I use Energy Efficient AMD CPUs. So please, Let us choice if we want an AMD or Intel CPU in our computers.

Don't make it difficult for people to find Ubuntu machines
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by xivulon

Ubuntu is now shipped to Europe, but it is hidden away and not that obvious to find. If you did not follow the news, you would probably have missed it completely. What link do people usually follow when buying a laptop at dell.co.uk? They follow the most preminent links:
Notebooks > Home > Home Essential Notebooks
This is where they usually end up to: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/notebooks_good?c=uk&...
The inspiron 6400 does come with Ubuntu, but do you see a "Select with ubuntu" button anywhere? I don't think so. If you want a Ubuntu machine you have to get there via a completely different route, by selecting the OS first (on the less visible left column) and then the machine... You can do that for XP too, but with XP you can also select the machine first and then the OS. Why is it not the same with Ubuntu? Moreover, if you click on the laptop image, it will automatically select Vista (thus giving it far more preminence).
So, I am glad Dell started shipping Ubuntu, but to me it looks like they only want to make informed geeks happy, while hiding the option to average joe. If Dell was really serious they should have Ubuntu listed in the customization section of each and every supported machine.
Customize your Operating System:
* Ubuntu Linux [subtract £30] * Genuine Windows XP [Included in price] * Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic - English [Included in Price] * Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium - English [add £23.50] * Genuine Windows Vista™ Ultimate (32Bit) - English [add £117.50]
There is already a conflict-resolution message, so you could easily signal incompatible OS/hardware choices. The above is what I call "choice", anything else is muddling the water.

Guarantee for Ubuntu Laptops WAY more EXPENSIVE than windows
Linux, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by madjr
Feb 16
since Ubuntu has been offered i have purchased 2 Dell Laptops (sadly with Vista included... and yes, formated afterwards which was a pain with that dell media center stuff, windows based, screwed up partitions)
why i had to buy them with windows?
because the 3 year Guarantee for windows laptops is way cheaper on most models (or just wait a few weeks and you can get a huge bargain on the guarantee).
i´ve gotten a 3 year guarantee for just $99 on some of the windows offers.
while SADLY the 3 year guarantee for Ubuntu is $260 to $300.......
if it's the same GOD UMM hardware, why i can get a cheaper warranty on windows ones and not the ones with Ubuntu ??
i only purchase Ubuntu compatible models, but sadly can't get em with Ubuntu pre-installed.
My purchases counted as windows instead of Ubuntu ones, to me as an Ubuntu and Dell costumer thats worthless..
You have 2 choices:
A- lower the guarantee for all Ubuntu based PCs
B- Include an option on ALL (yes all compatible) INSPIRONS 1420 and XPS M1330 to let you choose bettween VISTA and UBUNTU, without extra charge or making the guarantee more expensive if you choose Ubuntu as pre-installed OS.

Linux for Business Line of Computers
Linux, Small Business, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jctosu
Feb 20
Many Business owners and computer administrators would like to see Linux as an option for being pre-installed in Business class Desktops and Laptops. For Business users being able to choose to run Linux over Windows may result in a better choice for many owners trying to cut down on overall price, improve their competitive edge, and reduce system down time. QUITE SIMPLY MANY BUSINESS OWNERS WANT LINUX ON THEIR MACHINES.

An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times.
The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!

Better integration between Linux and Windows on Dell Computers.
Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by guindog
Mar 5
It is interesting that the experience of using Linux on a Dell is more integrated with the rest of the products of the company.
I mean, it would be a point that would make the difference on the remainder of the competition if, for example, in a business meeting where there was a Dell, the exchange of information or execute applications is not an impediment, regardless of whether having computers with Windows or Linux. That is to install a demo, see a website with specific plugins and acquaintances, video codecs and sounds or document formats, it should not be an issue to try to discuss the quarterly balance sheet, conducting a video condeferencia, or see a presentation.
I do not claim an iLife (which pretty serious anyway), but if a CrossOver Office or Wine try to be much more integrated into the specifications for a Windows Vista pre-installed and supported by Dell. And so to see a movie, hear an audio file format. Ogg,. Mp3 or. Wma or whatsoever, and so on ...
I know that there are limits that can not be avoided (drivers?, dll?), But that the experience of using a Dell is not limited or marginalized by the operating system that one has wanted to choose.
Thanks.

Gracias.

Remove stubid welcome text.
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by smarsen

The first thing a costumer reads when entering Dell's opensource pages is:
The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Windows® operating system. If you’re here by mistake and you are looking for a Dell PC with Windows, please use the following link.
Remove this stupid text. It sound like something is missing on a computer without commercial software. The main thing is that you get a freely available OS with free worldwide support (community) and loads of free software installable simply also for dummies.

Start offering DELL products to the general public in Poland
Dell, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lukasz.wisniewski
11/12/07
According to today's local newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza [1], by 20th November, 11:30 to be more exact, Dell will just have manufactured their first notebook in Lodz, Poland. Unfortunately, even though I am inhabitant of this city, it is more than unlikely I will buy DELL notebook anytime soon.
Firstly, the current policy of your company in Poland is "Only for enterprises and institutions" (original in Polish: Tylko dla firm i instytucji). Such a approach seems to me to be more than just bizarre. Do you happen to realize Poland is something like 38 milions of your potential customers? Just for instance, in my city, there are two big public universities, several private ones - you see the universities but not the students. Is this of your concern? I guess not but Apple is already there offering discounts for students.
Secondly, start distributing preinstalled Ubuntu for Poland as well. I actually do not see the point why you do this in UK, Germany or France and not in Poland. People of Poland are more eager to install open-source products, just let me remind you that according to XiTi monitor [2] open-source Firefox browser has market share of 39.6% in Poland, whereas in Germany - 38%, France - 23.9% and UK just 18.7%.
Thirdly, by preinstalling Ubuntu I mean making it an option anywhere where there is an OS selection option on your website. I clearly see no reason in the world why you keep offering such a miserable Ubuntu notebook in Europe instead of something more powerful - Inspiron 6400n with Intel T2130 processor. In your opinion, how impressive is that nowadays?
Last but not least, DELL, please stop participating in this devoid of good sense campaign "Dell recommends Vista..." which is sarcastic. You really do not have to put down this sentence on your website as in Poland you force people to use Vista leaving no other choice.
Take all these remarks under your consideration unless it is OK with you that Poles should travel to Germany in order to buy your notebooks. Hear our voice, DELL!

Provide more processor options for linux desktops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by rebresb
Feb 13
Only one Linux desktop model is available (Inspiron 530N) and only one processor choice exists for it (dual core 2160). This CPU is a low-to-moderate performance choice; it is near the lowest offering in the Windows line-up. While Linux clearly out-performs Windows on modest hardware, the choice of Linux doesn't merely reflect a cost-savings and performance-optimized decision. Users may want the choice of high-end CPUs for intensive applications with Linux. Windows is not the choice of those who want high-end equipment; it requires high-end equipment to run "well". Linux users seeking peak performance will thus want fast processors. (Note that the most/fastest supercomputers run Linux). Support for such processors / motherboards isn't an issue for Linux, so certification by Dell shouldn't be difficult (??). The profit margin is likely higher on these CPUs (??), so that should be attractive. So why doesn't Dell include fast Intel or AMD offerings such as quad-core, 64 X2, core 2 extreme, etc.?

Put Ubuntu on a laptop with better specs
Inspiron products, Linux submitted by piratehead
10/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Offer an Ubuntu laptop (Inspirion or otherwise) with available discreet graphics, discreet audio, 8GB or more of RAM, a quad-core processor, bluetooth, next-gen WiFi, and integrated webcam.
I don't know how many of those are possible at this point, but each one is a step forward for people who are waiting on certain specs to bite on a Dell laptop.
Now that you offer laptops with Ubuntu on them, I really don't want to go to another company just to get the computer specs I want. I wish to vote for Dell with my dollars, paying for a laptop that has actually been tested and certified by the manufacturer to run Ubuntu. Please give me the opportunity!

Next level of Ubuntu multimedia
Linux submitted by 6205
Mar 5
Now, when Dell included in Ubuntu 7.10 comercial DVD playback and Adobe Flash player, is time to move and enhance this initiative to next level...
When Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will be released, ship it with pre-installed high quality multimedia codecs from Fluendo. "Complete Set of Playback Plugins" will move entire Ubuntu experience to whole new level with legal, properly licenced and fully functional playback of those media formats.
Maybe should Dell also cooperate, support or work together with this company and bring to us even more improved (and legaly licenced) codec pack for it own customized Ubuntu version and advertise this added value on Dell Homepage.
This will be something what will motivate me to buy Ubuntu Dell PC much more than some aditional year of support contract.

"Choose Ubuntu Linux" as an OS option for Dell Canada
Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by awong
Mar 5
Now that Dell is FINALLY offering Ubuntu for its Canadian customers, either
1. a link from the main page of the Canadian site to its Ubuntu offerings should exist
or
2. a link for a choice of an OS for the systems that Dell Canada is currently offering Ubuntu pre-installed (currently Inspiron 1420, 1525, XPS M1330 laptops and Inspiron 530 Desktop) should be given.
I found the Dell Canada Ubuntu page by using Ubuntu in a keyword search. Now that Linux is becoming more mainstream, Dell Canada's Ubuntu offerings should not be hidden from the general public. There will be no market if the public is not aware of choices available to them.

Complete Systems (with all the accesories + Penryn chips) with Free Software OSs
Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by sudheera

The ability to select extra addons for the Desktops and Laptops when buying with Ubuntu GNU/Linux installed. ** I recently ordered a dell xps 1330 laptop. I'm only going to use a Free OS with that but I had to buy a laptop with vista because the Ubuntu laptops didn't come with the new penryn, the wireless-N card or the free fingerprint reader.
Is there any way of providing these features, at least as an option. Is there anyway of getting a refund for vista??

Bring back high resolution screens (1680x1050) for Ubuntu laptops
Linux, Laptops submitted by meuge
Feb 22
I understand that Dell has decided to use the high resolution panels in the XPS line of laptops, and not in the Inspiron line. However, this means that it's impossible to purchase a laptop with Ubuntu that has a higher screen resolution than 12XX.
To rectify the issue, please either introduce the full XPS line with Ubuntu, or allow customers to pay more for higher resolution screens on Ubuntu inspirons.

Beefier (Ubuntu Pre-Installed) Desktop Series needed for powerusers
Inspiron products, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by sethloco
Mar 10
The current Inspiron 530N's mobo/processor/casing falls a little short of what a poweruser would be looking to buy. I think there would be a market for an upgraded desktop, because in recent times, there are a lot of linux powerusers who are finding that they don't have to build their machines from scratch and do a bunch of research on hardware compatibilities. However, they still expect top-notch machines and a short glance at the Inspiron 530n sends them elsewhere. It would be nice to offer a sub-$1000 (base) desktop series with specs more like the following. PROCESSOR: Q6600 2.4GHZ core 2 quad or E6550 2.33GHZ core 2 duo. Some of us like to run vm machines.....help us out! CASE: Just something larger with ample space to put 2+ hard drives and good heat dissipation POWER SUPPLY: 500+ watt options MEMORY: Again...with those who use vm machines, it's nice to have the option of 4GB+ of memory. The fact that the current Inspiron bios cripples this is a major showstopper. As an aside, Dell's current memory is overpriced. A Linux poweruser buying this theoretical machine, who by prior necessity is used to building their own, is going to know that and purchase memory elsewhere.
Thanks for the IdeaStorm site!
