Let us rate Ideas on a scale of 1-10 instead of just up/down.

Most of the Ideas on IdeaStorm are good. Few are great. So very often I find myself reading an idea and thinking "yeah, that's kinda good and it'd be nice if Dell did this; but I sure hope it wouldn't distract them from the even better ideas".
Rather than just voting up or down and idea, how about change the voting system so everyone can rate an idea from 1-10.

Do not scale back build-to-order systems
Desktops and Laptops submitted by masterr
Apr 5 **ALREADY OFFERED**
Today in the news I read that Dell "is moving away from its build-to-order model to reduce costs. Dell is limiting the degree to which buyers can dictate specifications while expanding its line of prepackaged models". Please do not do this. The options build-to-order system is what sets Dell above some of the competition. By scaling this back and removing customization choices you remove some of the appeal of buying a Dell machine online. Please do not scale this back.

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet
XPS products submitted by croftki
Feb 17
I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude.

Improve backorder info
Service and Support submitted by mls
12/11/07
I ordered an inexpensive printer from Dell about a month ago. Shipping has now been delayed a couple of times with the only explanation being that it is on backorder.
This doesn't make a lot of sense. At the time of the order it had already been replaced by a new model so I'd assumed they were just clearing out the inventory of the old model. It is hardly like it was a new model where the product announcement might have gotten ahead of production capability.
To the point, trying to get any info beyond "backordered" has been a futile effort. While people have been very polite, it is pretty clear that they have no useful info and that my options are either to shut up and wait or cancel. Reminds me of trying to get information regarding flight delays out of an airline - just an exercise in frustration.
My suggestion is to improve the quality of detail available when shipments have been delayed. There has certainly been nothing impressive or useful about this experience.

Offer BOTH the 32 bits AND the 64 bits versions of all Windows Vista editions (Home Basic/Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all PCs
Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice
Feb 24
(Note to XP and Linux users: I am not against Dell offering XP and Linux as well, but this idea is specifically about Vista.)
(Note to Dell: I have never seen any exact duplicate of this so far, as I have seen no idea asking for both 32 bits and 64 bits yet. So please do not merge with what you might find to be a duplicate, until you notify me and I make a reply.)
The idea has been thrown around the site for quite a long time now. I have seen ideas asking for 64 bits Vista, but no specific mentions of 32 bits Vista. So I decided to post it.
Offer both the 32 bits and the 64 bits versions of all Windows Vista editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all PCs.
That way, I could choose any of those four editions in either 32 bits or 64 bits format. With 32 bits, you can get better compatibility with hardware and software. With 64 bits, you can get better use of memory, and you are able to get up to 4 GB of RAM and even greater.
In my opinion, neither outweighs the other, so I would like it if Dell could offer all of it. I personally will buy only 32 bits Vista because for me, compatibility is more important than memory usage and I do not happen to need 4 GB of memory. But many others want the option of 64 bits Vista.
HP can offer 64 bits Vista Ultimate (I myself have tried to configure their PCs), why can you not? The problem with them however, is that I am forced into buying 64 bits Vista Ultimate or no Vista Ultimate at all. You currently offer 32 bits Vista Ultimate, and keep that option. Just add 64 bits Vista options to your current offerings, but keep your current offerings too.

Reduce automated menus, make reception operators more worthwhile
Service and Support submitted by pepitoe
12/14/07
Every time I call Dell I have to go through about 4 levels of automated menus (press 1 for something 2 for something else) just to get put through to a receptionist who will probably ask at least some of the same questions. Can you not assume that customers calling the home customer service line for example really do want home customer service, the receptionist can certainly put them right if they have made a mistake, without all the annoying menus.
Also since the reception always takes the order number or service tag, surely these details should be automatically attached to the call and made available to the person you eventually get through to so they don't have to ask again. This sort of thing is easily achievable on a modern phone system.

Allow anyone to get any PC in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site.
Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice

Look at the Dell Home and Home Office page for the XPS M1710 and the XPS M1730 http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb_gaming?c=us&cs=19&l=.... I can get the XPS M1710 in the Home and Home Office channel of the Dell site.
But look at this Dell Small Business page (which is for all XPS notebooks that are offered in that channel) http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb?. The XPS M1710 is nowhere to be found in the Small Business channel! But why?
It is like saying that home users want the XPS M1710, but nobody in a small business would want it. But some people in small businesses do. For some people in small businesses, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all PCs actually.
For example, suppose that a home user like the designs of the Vostros and wants to buy a number of them. But they are not offered in the Home and Home Office channel, so he needs to go to the Small or Large Business channel to buy them.
Or suppose that a business user wants certain XPS systems that are offered only in the home channel, so he has to go there to buy them.
In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who get into such problems.
An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all PCs in all of your channels.

Please notify your customers when items are backordered
Sales Strategies submitted by tbbaot
12/03/07
As a long time customer, I am frustrated that Dell can't make basic changes to the online shopping system. Most large online retailers post an accurate inventory status right on their pages. I recently ordered a TV that said 'ships in 24 hours'. When I received my confirmation email, I could tell from the estimated shipping date that something was wrong. So I called and learned the TV is backordered. The same TV on your website still says 'ships in 24 hours' one week later. If other companies can have realtime stock and inventory reporting, so can Dell. This TV is not manufactured by Dell so it has nothing to do with your just in time business model. Here's an idea when an item goes into backorder status, post it on your online store.

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime
Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese
02/17/07
Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.
Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it!

Partner with Micron to create a RAM module style SSD
New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage submitted by jervis961
12/07/07
"In addition to Micron's traditional solid state drives announced today, they also showed off a concept for a SSD module that resembles RAM in physical design and would fit into a similarly designed port. It's obvious but genius: while the SSD drives with SATA interfaces are terrific because they can be used in current laptops with no mods, the real performance of flash mem is only going to be unlocked when we cast aside the legacy of spinning disks and their cases and interfaces and mount SSDs on the mobo like we do RAM modules.
The design uses a SATA interface and is only 4 mm thick. Micron claims the advantages of such a design are the small size and the ability to line up multiple drives next to each other. In addition, this design requires no wires or attaching the motherboard with screws, reducing the risk of the SSD becoming disconnnected or loose inside a computer. While this product is nowhere near ready for market, Micron says they would need to work with an OEM or someone who can offer a compatible computer solution."

Monitor/Laptop Display Toggleing
Vostro products submitted by waterdog
12/07/07
I would like to see Dell provide the functionality in the Vostro 1500 laptop to toggle the display to an external monitor only. The only current choice is to toggle between combined external monitor and laptop display and laptop display only.
I was told by Dell Tech Support that this model laptop was not designed with this functionality.

Build More Durable Products
New Product Ideas, Simplify IT submitted by aikiwolfie
11/28/07
I would like Dell to build more durable products. Something that will last a minimum of 5 years.
And by "minimum" I mean exactly that. The product shouldn't die a death after 5years and 3 seconds. Dell should be building goods that last.

More Dell <-> Community Communication
IdeaStorm submitted by mistern
05/15/07
Certainly, Dell's move to start IdeaStorm was a good one, and I think it will improve the situation quite a bit.
What I'd like to see is more direct and spontaneous (but somewhat official) communication between Dell employees and the users of this site. dell_admin1 does communicate with us, but mainly about administrative issues.
You get our feedback. We want your feedback. Agree?
jmxz's part of the idea (his article was merged here): IdeasStorm needs more participation from Dell Management and EmployeesDell has meetings with the management to discuss Ideas that are posted to the site. Why can’t some of those managers stop by and ask questions or maybe enlighten users when they suggest an idea that isn’t feasible. I’m not saying they need to spend the whole day doing this but maybe just pop in once in a while. I believe that such conversations lead to better ideas not only from us but from Dell employees as well. This kind of interaction would also make users know that they are being listened to. Further information in the comments of this Idea.

Multi-OS selection via checkboxes
submitted by xivulon
11/29/07
What about having a checkbox for each operating system in order to allow users to select multiple choices? No checkbox = no OS, multiple checkboxes = Multiboot. The conflict resolution dialog notifes about conflicts between OS and other hardware choices.
Select My Operating Systems: [ _ ] Free DOS (info) [$0] [ x ] Ubuntu 7.10 (info) [$0] [ _ ] Windows XP (info) [add $50] [ x ] Windows Vista Basic (info) [add $50] [ _ ] Windows Vista Home Premium (info) [add $100] [ _ ] Windows Vista Ultimate (info) [$150] [ _ ] Windows Vista Business (info) [$100]
Ubuntu, XP and all other operating systems should be made available on all machines unless there is a fundamental hardware issue that makes a particular OS unsuitable (an issue that cannot be resolved by selecting a different component). Each item should have an info button which opens a brief explanation, a fair comparison table of all operating systems should also be provided. Details such as bootloader choice in multiboot configuration and disk allocation algorithm are left to Dell engineers to have fun with.
Hopefully that will accomodate most requests relating to OS choice while keeping the interface simple and intuitive.

Help me consolidate my customer numbers on Dell.com.
Dell Web Site submitted by cosmichellion
11/29/07
I've made many purchases through dell and I have many customer numbers. It's nice that there is a feature that shows all the customer numbers and orders I've placed under Home, Home Office, SMB etc.
However, I keep wondering why the feature doesn't allow you to add customer numbers from certain other segments. When I wanted to add my new customer number and order for a recent purchase, I was given the following message...
"Only Home & Home Office, Small Business, Dell Refurbished and Dell Outlet customer numbers can be added using this feature. This customer number has not been added to your account."
If this feature doesn't do it, is there another I'm missing?
My newest purchase probably shows up under hi-ed or an EPP. It doesn't really matter, I just want to be able to keep track of all my orders in one place regardless of the segment. Can you make this happen?

A new XPS 17' (Non-gaming) notebook.
submitted by okroger104
11/30/07
I really like the new XPS 15" notebook.
Why not make a 17" notebook with the same expanded streamlined chassis. I was thinking that I would want a keypad though. In addition, the only other options I think it should include are:
1. 1900x1200 and/or 1680x1050 resolution. 2. Dual hard drives. 3. Single Nvidia 8800M GTS or GTX graphics card.
I'd buy this system the day it is released.
I don't like the XPS 1730 gaming notebook because it's too flashy and consumes too much energy, it isn't "portable," and it's too costly for technology that goes obsolete in less than a year.
Thank you Dell for your consideration from a long time Dell consumer.

Has Dell considered turning the tables on Apple by offering the ability to run Leopard on it's beautifully designed XPS range. I can't think of a better way to stop the migration of PC users to Apple based systems.
