More RAM!

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Ground Control, Windows Has Problems....

The International Space Station is again suffering from computer problems.

The space station, experiences regular computer glitches. Iin 2001 most of the problems were related to Microsoft's Windows NT, while Russian-made software seemed to be more reliable. In the last few days they've had problems with the Russian software...the only hope is Linux!

Dell provide Ubuntu to the International Space Station (with Russian and English tech support!).

Linux promotion

I don't know about you, but I noticed the label that you get when entering the only part of Dell site that you get for sure to see Ubuntu Linux.

The label that you first see on the site (The one with BIGGER LETTERS). I don't know about you but when someone ask me where they can find the "famous" Ubuntu-Dell computer I redirect them to www.dell.com/open, and what do you get in there? I frightening: "Not sure Open Source is for You?" What's this kind of marketing? You tell someone, hey there is Dell selling Linux computers but if you not sure if Linux is for you, come get a Windows PC!!!!

I believe that Linux is not only for the "Already an Open Source fan", Ubuntu, and Linux, is ready for much more of that. Why don't change that with something that motivate people to search and get involved in the Linux world?

I know that Dell is getting more $$$ for the Windows' computers, but I don't think this is the right way to promote a "new" product. Comment »

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Scanners for Linux

For years I've been frustrated with scanner support and compatibility in Linux. There is a project that provides drivers for many scanners, but many of the drivers are outdated and many of the better scanners are not supported.

It would be great if Dell could partner with Canon or Epson (or someone else) to provide robust scanning solutions for Linux users. By robust, I mean that the scanner should be full-featured; including film trays, high resolution color scanning, and possibly even software to work with scanned images (ie- document management)..

The scanners should be current (read New) scanners with preferably open source drivers that will work with SANE.

For now, I will have to continue to boot to Windows just to use my unsupported scanner. 10 Comments »

Linux Printing Solutions

I have a Dell 3100cn laser printer, which was a nice purchase until I dropped Windows XP and moved to OpenSuSE on my home computer.

I've tried a lot of different message boards looking for a way to keep that printer, but I'm so frustrated with Dell's lack of Linux support that I have to consider HP, since the LaserJet family is more broadly supported. 53 Comments »

Dual boot Windows and Linux

Everytime I get a new laptop or desktop, I usually resize my partitions so I can dual boot windows and linux. Ubuntu is a great OS for people to start learning linux. This way you have the best of both worlds. Users would not have to worry about their software being compatible with their OS. I do not know any other company that offers this and would make Dell stand out as doing something different. 6 Comments »

Recently Dell refused to sell their Ubuntu PCs to a small non-profit business. Please do sell them in future, letting the market for the Ubuntu PCs expand however it chooses.
