Sell Ubuntu Systems to Businesses Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by defrex 06/20/07
Recently Dell refused to sell their Ubuntu PCs to a small non-profit business. Please do sell them in future, letting the market for the Ubuntu PCs expand however it chooses. 6 major issues to be fixed by Dell Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07
Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again. Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS. Monitors and Displays submitted by drew08867 06/28/07 Dell should transition all monitors to LED back lighting. More cost effective (in terms of energy use), greener, longer life. 11 Comments » Explain why you made Windows cheaper than Ubuntu again for the same hardware Linux submitted by jmxz 07/07/07
Dell, you labeled the idea "Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is $50 Less Than Windows Dell" as "Implemented" Just did my own 1420 vs 1420N comparison. The Windows machine comes with a free upgrade to 2GB Memory and 160GB Drive, which each cost more on the Ubuntu machine. Apparently, it's harder to install memory and hard drives on Linux??? Hmmm.. no, not that I recall. Anyway, with all the same options selected between the two machines, the Ubuntu Tax apparently is now running $275. Now I know Ubuntu's a better OS; but c'mon - even I wouldn't pay a $275 premium for Ubuntu over Windows. Or are you trying to kill the Ubuntu sales - and if so, just come out and say that? 14 Comments » Properly warn consumers about ~3GB Max useable RAM limit with Vista 32bit Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by benjesuit 06/18/07
Only Vista 64 bit can use 4GB of ram or higher. Vista 32bit (such as the recommended Home premium), like XP (32bit) will only report a max of ~3.1GB. Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by davew 02/18/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Heat rises! Get the exhaust ports off the bottom of the laptops where it just blows back up into the machine. Put them out the side or the top and everything including processors, drives, batteries and the cooling systems themselves will run cooler and more efficiently. I already burned out one mother board, which thankfully was replaced under extended warrantee. I am so protective now that I never use my laptop without a supplemental cooling pad underneath, which blows the air out the sides. Unless this changes I would think twice about buying another or recommending a Dell laptop to anyone else without advising them of the problem. Support for Open Document Format Operating Systems, Software submitted by lordshipmayhem 06/12/07
Dell should encourage support for Open Document Format: Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations. Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com) Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops. Continue to supply Windows XP drivers for all systems. Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by audiofree 07/10/07 Let’s face it, Vista regardless of how Microsoft is trying to possession is not what all customers want. Some of us want to continue to use XP, it’s a lighter faster OS that does what we need. Please continue to support XP drivers at least. I want to buy one of the new 1420s or 1520s but can’t because not all the drivers are available. If you’re not going to sell the laptops with and XP option at least make the drivers available so those of us that want to install XP on our systems can. 20 Comments » The Neo 1973 could be your answer to the iPhone Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz 07/10/07
This phone has The OpenMoko based touchscreen mobile phones and developer kits go on sale. The media is already positioning it as an iPhone rival: http://www.techworld.com/mobility/news/index.cfm?newsID=9417&pagtype=samechan Linux phone poses as iPhone rival I think embracing this platform as your answer to the iPhone would be interesting. The more technical community would love the ability to program a cell phone (in the same way you can your PC products) which is lacking in the Apple product. PS: one of your other competitors (Toshiba) already announced a linux phone this month: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS2806053950.html ; but this Neo device seems better (better industrial design) to me. Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..
Dell - Tell us if this explains why it's so hard to get No OS on many Dell models? Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 07/10/07
The Idea is that if there's a reason like this that Dell won't offer No OS on more systems, they should just come out and say ...in 2000, Microsoft ratcheted the restriction up so that OEMs are forced to forfeit all discounts otherwise earned if they ship any "naked machines" to consumers. This heightened restriction, which (on information and belief) continues to the present, prohibits PC users and PC retailers from buying and installing lower priced or better quality operating systems of their choice."10 Comments » Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07
These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one) TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07 Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments » Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is Le$$ Than Windows Dell Linux submitted by thebittersea 05/05/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Make Dell Ubuntu PCs available to businesses and non-profits Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by wyleyr 06/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell is apparently not yet willing to sell Ubuntu-based PCs to business users, non-profits, or other organizations larger than a "home office." See this Ubuntu forum thread for more: Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07
Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems. track my votes
