Duo PC

Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by nkama May 18

I would like to share an idea I have thinking last time, about of creation of one PC with function of two PC's. I mean, one pc being used by two people with two different desktop and processing different data, just like people using two computer normally. This idea raised after noticing that many household face more and more need of buying two or more computers for the family members. And to me, woould sound better if your company produces a pc with function of two pc's and supplying information to two different monitors with their keyboard, and preferably a wireless pc and monitors as well the keyboards. These pc's could be used in the companies as well as in the offices.

With kind regards,

Simplify Customization Process

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by delfmeek May 18

There are too many options when ordering a PC/Laptop. While choice is a good thing, I do not understand why Dell offers several memory configurations. The last time I ordered a desktop, I had 8 choices of memory configurations, for 1, 2, 3, or 4 gigabytes of a memory. I could get the 1,2,3, or 4 gigs of memory in 667 or 800 Mhz of memory. Why in the the world would I choose the 667 MHZ of memory, when less than $50 seperates me from the 800 MHZ option? eliminate the 667 MHZ memory module option, and just simplify it. I hate to say it, but Apple's website is super easy to configure---use that as a model. 4 Comments »

Power Cable

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by mbhmirc May 19

Make both cables on laptop PSU's replaceable. It' costs around £90 to replace a power unit when the cable at the laptop end becomes damaged. Making both ends detachable will allow for the cable to be replaced instead of the whole unit. 4 Comments »

give the origianl CD of the OS and not an ISO

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by siger May 19

when there is a problem with the Master Boot Record the ISO can't repair it and we have to go to a reparation company.

Please give us the original disc and not an ISO. IT Is more expensive but , more satisfaction for the customer. 12 Comments »

Standardize Laptop Hard Drives - banish these connectors

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by georgecoffey May 20

I wanted to upgrade my hard drive as it had a second Hard Drive Bay. When I purchased a new hard drive from a local PC Store, it wouldn't go into my new laptop. I had previously checked that it was a SATA HDD and Laptop. However, when I took out my system Drive(the one that came originally), I did notice a little connector was on it.

I went to my local PC store again to see if they could provide me with the connector, but they said go to the PC Manufacturer. So I contacted Dell, and they said you should have bought it off Dell meaning I would have to spend €300 at least on a very expensive hard drive. Whereas in a PC Store you'd get them, for far less. However, I don't understand how PC Stores can sell Laptop Hard Drives without this connector. My idea is to standardize Laptop Hard Drives without this connector cause if a newbie to PCs, wanted to upgrade their hard drives and found that they couldn't it would be a complete waste of money.

I'm beginning to wonder are Dell the only company that have these connectors the fact that the PC Store didn't have any knowledge on them. 13 Comments »

Dell EEE-alike - using VIA CN or ARM processors for exceptional (8+) battery life

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by mandarinka Mar 27

This has been suggested a number of times, but I would like to stress some points, that, in my opinion would make for a unique product.

1. The device must have better-than-laptop class battery life. That means 6 to 8 hours and more under normal (not full) load on a standard battery. The battery unit must be a quality one - it is supposed to retain a significant poriton of capacity over two or three years, not like the Asus/Acer "disposables" :)

2. 9"-10" LCD; Keep the borders tiny, the size of the device should stay as small as it can (size overshoot with small display is a blight of all the new lowend subnotebooks). LED backlight to reduce power draw.

3. Use a real lowpower CPU - the new and supposedly high-performance Via CN (Isaiah) comes to mind.

4. Alternatively, use an ARM core: this could lead to MUCH longer battery life (using laptop-class battery). Cortex-A9 (or Cortex-A9 MPCore) CPU could offer performance on par with lowend x86 CPUs.

5. The chipset of the computer should have some video processing unit integrated for low power usage (= long battery life) video playback. A mobile chip capable of this (aside of being an integrated GPU and ARM11 CPU) is nVidia APX 2500; supposedly able of playing 10hours of video from a cellphonne battery. It is also 720p resolution capable.

6. OS capability: Windows CE, WIndows mobile, or Linux (good choice: provides easy portabiltiy of open-spource applications).

The result would be PC class minilaptop suitable for work/browsing/entertainment/e-book reading etc... for extended period of time in schools, planes, trains, or generall on the go. 13 Comments »

Audio ports shouldn't be on the front of the XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by einbauschrank Mar 27

The frontal positioning of the audio ports (i.e.: the headphones) on the XPS 1330 is uncomfortable. Especially if you have the laptop on your (gasp!) lap the headphones poke into the stomach.

A lateral position would civumvent this problem. Just out of curiousity: Why are they located at the front? 11 Comments »

acoustic server cabinets

Small Business submitted by juanzworld Mar 27

I have a rackable hardware at my home that makes just too much noise. Why cant Dell Design an enclosed sound proof server rack with cable managment and power strips.

Not everyone has a seperate room for their hardware.

Currently I found only 5 companies that make them but their all oversees. Dell get on board. I'm sure if you make it they will buy it.
If you like my idea maybe I can buy it at a discounted rate. 4 Comments »

Reorganize 'Tech Specs' Page in a Clear, Tabular Format

Dell Web Site, Precision Workstations submitted by sgogeta4 Mar 27

Problem:

1. The tech specs page should clearly list each and every specification of this laptop that is consistent with every other laptop tech spec sheet so that people can easily navigate and compare specs. Taking the Precision M2300 as an example, I search for the words "kg" and "lbs" and nothing found. This is simply unacceptable, these important specs should be easily found.

2. The headings and pictures are nice but the description lacks any technical information on your options.

"NVIDIA Quadro® FX 360M1
The NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M offers some of the latest graphics technology to produce extraordinary visual effects, robust wide-aspect LCD support and compatibility with all major business

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/precn_m2300?c=us&l=e...

Solution:

1. As stated above, present ALL key information in a similar format for ALL laptops. This means we need weights (and how this weight was calculated in the footnote as in other pages); pictures of each side of the laptop with the list of each port; description of each option for each section (ie. on the M2300 video card section, it says you can have 256MB discrete memory but on the selection page you only have the option of 128MB discrete memory). Clicking on the configuration for the laptop:

Video Card: 512MB Turbo Cache memory (256 dedicated)

Option: NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M 256MB TurboCache (128MB dedicated)

2. Maybe offer a few more details (source from the nVidia page):

Memory Size Up to 256MB
Memory Type GDDR3
Memory Interface 64-bit
...
Max Power Consumption 17W

The tech specs page is for those who understand these figures (even if you don't, more information is always

Smartbay option on your future notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 27

Smartbays are a fantastic idea and are already implemented on alienwares m15x. They can act as an extra hard drive or solid state drive or better still, a extra battery. They are a great multi-functioncal bay for larger peripherals and would fit perfectly in your future 15" and 17" notebooks. 5 Comments »

Prompt for PC (Image) Restore

Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by rohe Mar 27

Too many Dell users don't know about the existence of Dell's PC (Image) Restore partition. They reformat their hard drive and then post complaints and problems on the Dell Community Forum when it's too late to rescue them using PC Restore.

It's difficult to help them pick the right hardware drivers when they don't even know if they have on-board graphics or an add-in video card, etc.

Dell should consider inserting a new screen in their Windows Reinstallation software that pops up when a user attempts to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS. The screen should prompt the user to use PC Restore instead.

Obviously there are times when a format/install is needed (eg, a new hard drive). But in most circumstances, telling the user about PC Restore could get their system up and running again with a "factory fresh" OS in just minutes.

Docking Station for M1330

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by nmrrja1 Mar 27

I love the idea of the more powerful laptops that have been coming to market, esp. those with dedicated graphics. The M1210 was the first notebook I have been exicited about in a long time, expecially with Dell's industry leading docking stations. But wait, the M1210 didn't get a docking connector and wait. the M1210 has now been replaced. Surely the M1330 has a docking connector. It is after all, one of the most powerfull laptops of its size available. Wait, ah NO, no docking connector.

Ok Dell, its like this:

You get to sell me one computer. Not one desktop and one laptop, just ONE computer. I know that doesn't fit the old business model, but times have changed. I don't think I should be limited to a Latitude series notebook to get dedicated graphics and a docking station. Please, Please, Please integrate a docking connector in this (or the next) XPS series of notebooks. You will still get to sell me that one computer, but I will also be buying a seperate mouse and keyboard, excellent Dell LCD monitor and speakers of some sort.

And why we are at it, I like the 12.1" screen and smaller form factor of the first generation XPS series. I'll take mine in LED backlit too.

Certify XPS One is XP-Compatible

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by james.norman Mar 27

I personally would love to buy an XPS one for my parents who are't big technology people, and for that matter, who don't like change. While buying them a new computer without cables is a plus, what's holding me back is the change to the furstrating Microsoft Vista OS.

I would also like to see a set of XP drives come with this machine, even though XP is set for retirment in 3 more months. 4 Comments »

Next-Gen XPS For 2008 (8xx?)

XPS products submitted by doomlord52 Mar 27

Ok, now that we have the Nvidia 790i motherboard, the 9800GX2, and support for 8GB of RAM, Dell should really consider making a truely "next-gen" computer for 2008.

The 9800GX2 is priced at around $550, as the price dropped $50 within the first week of release. This means that you could get 2x 9800GX2 cards for about the same price as 2x or 3x 8800 Ultra's.

To accomidate the new graphics card, i would equip the XPS 8xx series with a 1500w PSU (offer up the 2Kw or more as option).

It would also be possible to advertise this as the "only rig made for Crysis", as a quad core, 8GB of RAM and 2x 9800GX2's are about the only thing that can run Crysis at max settings at a reasonable resolution. Comment »

New Generation on Computers

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mkjing Mar 27

Now, more and more documents are in PDF format with hundreds of pages which for me is very expensive to print off the entire document. Therefore, I think it'd be a great idea if someone could built something like a tablepc or "Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device", but a lot better and a lot cheaper which can read just PDF documents. I don't know if I made my self clear. I'm thinking about a small and very light device which can operate as a book so people can use it to read PDF documents. I think it'd be great. I'd be like a book.

Bring Back Original Dell Quailty !

Desktops and Laptops submitted by hal2001 Mar 27

Dell has cut corners on it's Inspiron 530 ( yes I know it's the lower cost product line) by leaving out the easy to open top case release of it's parent Dimension model, and in other small ways both inside and out. No it's no biggie to grab a screwdriver and waste two minutes opening the case on the new line of Inspiron 530's that now replaced the old Dimension series. What it is saying to me as a customer is I need to think twice about a Dell purchase as Dell is more then willing to lower the quality overall to keep that bottom line where they want it. Compare a Dell from a year ago to the same product line (XPS products also) and you'll see the difference yourself. Don't sell the customers a box of plastic and imported parts and then put what once was the proud DELL name on the outside. 2 Comments »
