Dell's Commitment to Ubuntu doesnt seem strong enough
Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by dwood

Seriously. Before I even pick a laptop I am being told that: "Dell recommends Windows Vista® Home Premium." How much do you get paid for that by Money-Soft? And then on the right side of your site there is this tab-banner that is asking me if I want Windows XP still. Where is the open source link? all the way down at the bottom left hand portion of the site (Least likely section to be looked at)
"You asked, we listened" yeah, right two cheap lines " For advanced users and tech enthusiasts," Yeah. if only I ddint find Ubuntu easier to use than Windwos. " we’re happy to offer a new open-source operating system," - and just how many ideas did it take for you guys to "listen" to us?"
"we are soon to be offering Opensuse to users in China?" <-> What about the rest of the world? < I noticed something was wrong there, and fixed it
Seeing little progress, is nice, but MORE would be GREAT!
Why arent you guys puruing Open Source more.... tenaciously?

Voting on Comments
IdeaStorm submitted by dwood
11/15/07
I think that being able to vote on comments-> the votes on that comment slightly affect the user's points like how commenting affects the idea poster's points.
1) This might inspire people to put up their comments as ideas.
2) If a person made a comment that was AWESOME then we should be able to reward him/her, not just with applause, but with points!
3) The idea poster might want to add the comment of someone into the idea based on a reader's approval
4) Als, a person should be able to specify: Neutral to the idea (default) Posititve to the idea (helps an idea by 5 points, with each comment on the idea worth less point 5 comments that are positive , with each one bringing the worth of that poster's comment (and later comments) down by one (until the 5th comment, which then is worth zero points Negative comments are the same basic idea, only in the negatives going up

The Portal
Servers and Storage, Service and Support submitted by dwood

Okay. This idea has been in my head for a long time.
The server/client has become used for most office workers. Many aren't allowed to save data to the PCs own internal hard drive and quite often they ARENT even allowed to use USB Flash drives or similar devices to save their work. Most of the time, everything goes on the companies intranet (happens a LOT in schools) This begs the question: why do you need a whole full blown PC on your desk when you dont even use half the parts that are in it? Especially when software licenses are becoming so expensive.
The answer is The Portal. All you need is a display, keyboard and mouse that lets you interact with a suitable operating environment (Two to Four Office Workers connected to a computer through the portal, basically an "id" of sorts for each office worker to plug into a Usb port or more advanced port) This also happens to snuggle up nicely with the growing trend of using internet based desktop applications. (Open Office, for instance, which was/can be internet-based)
There are some really awesome computers out these days that can get speeds we could only dream of in super computers, yet now these computers can handle things that the super computer of 1990 would struggle to do- almost with ease. With these new computers in the rise I think its time someone designed a computer that could fit 2 or more office workers in its processes, with giving them their own individual desktops. All it would take is a simple device that hold the following: Monitor output, ethernet cable (for connecting to the main computer/server) mouse-and-keyboard input slots, and two USB ports.
The device would be simple, holding 256 RAM (give or take as much as the buyers want in it, to take off some of the load of the office worker from the main computer if the computer cant handle all of the processor.
It is designed to be roughly the size of two or three Iphones put together, to save the offices the money of paying for a whole new computer every time they hire someone new., and make it easier for the main IT guy to administrate over what is going on.

Im not Feeling the serious-ness of your TWO Ubuntu lines
Linux submitted by dwood

seriously, Dell, I found the computers you offer to come with Ubuntu a joke. seriously, no one is going to want to even try Ubuntu with the way you advertise it on your site.
I dont find how you guys can actually be taking Ubuntu seriously with the way you guys sell it.
On customization of the ONE Ubuntu laptop: First off, changing the color on a laptop, should be included in price, because its just the back of the laptop screen thats changing, not the entire laptop.
Why cant I select more kinds of processors? three isnt exactly overwhelming me. Wheres Amd? you dont even let them compete with Intel in that sector? Also, those Intel Processors are junk compared to whats really out there.
About the support section: IF we didn't customize the computer we would not be getting hardware support? WHAT? and it costs $275 to get any better support? Ubuntu 7.04 is the only one you offer? what if I wanted 7.10? whats up? I thought you guys were supposed to constantly update your site.
I also noticed under the little asterisk the following: "pricing, shipping & handling and monthly payment information is subject to change without notice" So if I payed 25 monthly it could go up to 50 a month *without* notice?
On display: 14.1" for Ubuntu is kinda wimpy. where are my options if I was going with Ubuntu?
On graphics card: ONLY an INTEL graphics embedded card? what the heck? are you guys REALLY serious about Ubuntu?
On Memory: Its okay. cant complain there.
On HDD's What if I want an 80GB HDD but more RPMs? I have to get a 160 GB HD drive to get 7200 rpm's ($100 more than the 5400 rpm one)
Your optical drives are WI-MPY 24x for (CD) R is stupid, but it can only READ DVD's? 6x for a DVD-RW with Dual layer RW? bull. my drive cost 50 dollars. and it can do all that at 46x Write, 52x Read
Only an Intel wireless device? thats still Bull. you know, it would be nice if you guys actually showcased their competitor's Wireless devices.
Your batteries are okay there.
Better sound card choices would be GREAT!.
I might as well buy another computer than get your 4 yr warranty.......
I find it funny how you guys give away free recycling kits with your computers.....
As last, wheres an integrated webcam? an option for one of those would be cool.
I know, after looking at the choices for open source Dell is not serious about Ubuntu but I am and I know millions others are (up to 30 million)
Give us more powerfual choices in customizing and other pcs.

Idea Teams
IdeaStorm submitted by dwood
11/10/07
We should be allowed to start "teams" of users that work together to form ideas that members can actively send ideas back and forth for editing and revision, or members send ideas only viewable by that team in order to get more refined ideas so that they can be better than 'rough' ideas that leave all of the kinks worked out (not in code, but in options in that idea)
one example of a "rough" idea would be this one.

Change the Point system AND Cycling of ideas
IdeaStorm submitted by dwood
11/08/07
Okay, the whole thing where a vote is worth less every day and doesn't stop going down after 1 is annoying me. It seems like a way to slowly get rid of the ideas dell doesn't like. (aka just leave it alone long enough and no one will find it)
Instead of using something like the whole decaying votes, why dont they just create a scroller that automatically scrolls through ideas in a particular category selected by the user.
Then let that user find ideas that fit two or more categories. This should be at the front page of the ideastorm site. (added: For those who have not logged in too) they should also have the following categories by points so users can easily find ideas they might like or might not: Those -100 through -1 0-100 101-200 201-400 401-800 801-1200 1201-3000 3001-20000 20000-50000 50001+ Have a filter where I can filter through the most voted on in the past: Hour 12 hours Day 3 Days Week 2 Weeks Month 2 Months 4 Months 6 Months Year+ Popular should be those who have the best time up and votes ratio . say. Idea xy has been on the popular page for 4 months and has gotten 6000 points, but voting and commenting on it has stopped for a month. it should be time for that idea to move to an idea to an Archive of most popular ideas where we can see notes on it from Dell reps themselves and explanations why that idea was or was not implemented. Then we get to re-vote after we see Dell's explanation, agreeing or disagreeing with them in an archives section.
Another edit: Whether or not they take off the decaying votes, ideas that spark controversy and/or lots of comments should get points. This is where comment voting comes into play: If a comment gets voted up or down, that changes the overall point amount of the idea. A comment that gets set as a *negative* comment by the poster changes the overall points of an idea, lets say a comment voted up or down by the said user changes teh idea by an increment of three. as the person gets more comments in an idea, the less his *negative* or *positive* comments are worth.
Whats next: The selection of positive or negative comments (like/dislike/constructive) (positive/negative\neutral) are hidden from other users viewing the idea. All they do is affect the idea a bit more. and as a person gets more comments per time, eventually they wont change the amount of points of that idea. By default, if a person does not select a stading of positive/negative, then its neutral, and does not affect the amount of points that user's comments affect an idea. Then other users can vote on comments. (NOT neutral comments) changing how much that comment can affect the idea (no more than X and no less than -X) now, whether a comment was voted up by other users affects that user's points N amount (no more than V amount and no less than V amount) V amount is selected by the user in his profile how much he (or she) wants votes of other people on his/her non-neutral comments to affect their over-all points.
<- Sorry I got a little long-winded there. Tell me if I left any open ends please
Comment please so I can refine it and make it better.

I think that Dell should openly endorse and support Stanford's Folding @ home Program to help cure diseases.
How Dell Endorses this program is how they do it.

Laptops need to be more Upgradeable
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by dwood
10/26/07
Ive always had this idea about laptops being customizable.
Let's say Joe is going into college and only want to buy a 15.4" Inspiron notebook.
Lets say it works, does its job for two years, and for any reason whatsoever the screen on the laptop breaks (being unrepairable). Joe doesn't have $500 to buy a new one and a desktop wont work out for his classes hes taking. He then has to either 1) Beg for money from family members, 2) Skip school and work until he earns enough money enough for the new laptop that fits his needs, falling far, far behind in school, practically ruining that term's gpa .
What if Joe needed a larger screen than before? Or smaller, to save batteries? This is only one instance when being able to easily replace your laptop screen would have been a better choice.
More graphics cards in laptops should be removable for replacing with ones that also fit the "line" of the notebook, in case a person wanted to play better quality games or movies, without replacing the whole entire laptop.
What if Joe needs a better Cd drive, and doesnt want an external one?
More things in all laptops everywhere need to be replaceable. I dont want to replace my laptop just because the screen broke. I don't go around looking for new computers that have monitors every time mine breaks, I buy a new one. Why cant we just do that with a laptop?
Thank you for reading Dwood
