AWESOME Notebook extras (Dell is losing the notebook war!!!)

Dell should make their 17-inch notebook with a built-in keypad like Toshiba, HP, and Alienware. They should put a webcam, MagSafe power supply, backlit keyboard and touchpad (like the XPS), and fingerprint reader in their notebooks. If Dell would include all re-instalation discs with their computers, they would problably get more business, along with having all programs optional. Also, Dell should make an option on the XPS to have dual hard drives and dual graphics cards, Alienware still has them whipped on that. A better battery would also be appreciated, My new notebook's battery only lasts 2 hours!!! We should not have to pay for a descent battery. Dell should include the TheOpenCD.org CD as an option when customizing their computer.
If Dell were to make all these options possible on their notebooks, they would by far exel all other brands. PLEASE Promote these ideas that will revolutionize the market on notebooks.
Thanks a lot Dell for itegrating some of these ideas with the new Inspiron notebook line :) Rock On!!! =)

It's all about DESIGN!!!!

DELL, where are the original ideas? My brother just bought an Apple Macbook Pro, because he said a Dell with similar specs was too expensive, and Dell does not have an integrated camera onboard for all its products.
And more importantly, where is the cool factor? Dell laptops have no aesthetic style and are nowhere as this compared to an Apple counterpart.
Dell needs to get some industrial designers in-house and start adding some oomph (more capabilities/performance) and pzazz (style) to their products.

No more power transformer !!!!

some 10 years ago, laptops were only slightly bigger. At the time, 2 schools were battling : Internal vs. external power adapters.
Some models (like Toshibas Satelitte) had their power transformer INSIDE the laptop... All you needed was one of those thin power cable (fits in a pocket).
In the age of wireless and "all included", why can't we have laptops with power transformers inside. It would avoid to need "Laptop bags" (you know, with the big bulge on the from where the power transformer and cables are).
A 620 that has everything inside, with power included : put a handle on it, and I can take a plane with nothing else (cord in the pocket). Or I can put it in just any bag, making it a lot more discreet than those laptop "steal me" bags.
From a road warrior...

Docking Stations for Inspiron and XPS notebooks
Inspiron products, XPS products submitted by jlatham

These days with the proliferation of laptops on college campuses the utility of mediacenter laptops, such as Dell's Inspirons, is hampered by the absence of docking stations or port replicators designed to work seamlessly with these computers. Dell's makes them for Latitudes, but seems to overlook this vital portion of the market. Anyone who has ever used a docking station at work to connect periferals yearns to have one at home...or at school.

Standardize Laptops
Dell, Laptops submitted by mkmaster78

Ok I fully admit there may be a high likelihood of this being a dupe but I couldn't find this in any search. Basically it goes like this, laptops are almost completely nonupgradeable (I know Badblood posted about making upgradeable laptops) and no two different styles can interchange parts. This idea is something that would help this along immensely. Dell should create an open standard for laptop design (such as desktops have ATX, microATX, BTX, etc) and release a series of laptops based on it with the ability to purchase parts later that the user can install themselves as they would with a desktop. Alienware (which as we know Dell owns) does something similar, but this standard could be released openly across all manufacturers allowing an experience with your laptop much like that of a desktop. This would allow for not only more options for laptops but also a longer laptop lifetime as parts could be swapped in and out as desired or required (in case of hardware failure). So come on Dell, open up those laptops to us.

I know they've gotten smaller with the new line of inspirons, but lenovo's are still something to be rivaled. What is the point of having a thin/light laptop and a heavy power brick you have to carry around with it?

Docking Station for Vostro

Vostro looks like a good system and has some strengths over Latitude like the enhanced integrated sound, longer battery life, and better screen option, but lacks docking capability. So I went with Latitude, but I could really use those features mentioned. Could Dell look into adding those options to Latitude notebooks or adding a docking option to Vostro?

Improve Sales & Support for Premier Customers & Gold Tech Support Purchasers

((I wanted to share this e-mail that I sent over to my sales rep here since this issue was poorly handled and I hope nobody else experiences the same troubles. Sorry if the e-mail I sent is long, i explained the issue and then some suggested actions that Dell should consider. ))
Dell Gold Technical Support Manager,
Recently I purchased a brand-new state of the art laptop, a Dell Latitude D630, ordered on 6/13/2007 and arrived on 7/3/2007. Our organization not only purchased directly for dell for our equipment but also works with Dell to provide systems to our customers, as a computer is required to integrate with our product.
I write this e-mail, as I am deeply concerned with the “value proposition” behind Gold Technical Support. My issue was that I made a mistake and added a setting into the computer that I wanted to remove from a dell application. The setting was to connect “automatically” to a wireless network when the computer turned on. My mistake was that I had two networks one with a password and one without both with the same name. The computer tried to pass the password to the router without the password which caused it to connect but it produced errors that popped up on the computer.
The network card was built-in and provided by Dell along with the Dell Wi-Fi Catcher and Dell Utilities that go along with the wireless network card.
I thought it would be easy to talk to Dell being that I paid extra for “Gold Technical Support” and CompleteCare on a laptop. I wanted to talk to Dell since I had no idea how to use their software and I figured someone could help me. I was sorely mistaken and plan to most likely return the laptop to the Dell Representative I purchased it from ASAP.
Here is a snapshot of my issue since I hope someone will read this and take some action to help other customers who may have this issue in the future:
• I placed a call and spoke to Bryan. I was on the phone 11 minutes waiting as he appeared to walk away from the call. Please remember, all I needed dell to do was to clear the setting from the wireless adapter that said connect to SSID “network” and then add a new setting in their to connect to the new network in the house both had the same name.
• Because this was a five or ten minute issue, I hung up the phone. I now called back and spoke to another Dell representative.
The following was told to me by the 2nd Dell Representative:
• He did not offer to connect to the system since there could have been a language gap (I spoke English but I don’t think he understood) or sometimes it is just easier to see the problem.
• He took 52 minutes to resolve the call. The call was to delete a profile setting under the Dell Wi-Fi Catcher program and add a new profile. My surprise was that after the call I read the document which said “Use Windows To Manage My Wireless Network” a setting I was familiar with but left it at the default setting since that was what I thought Dell intended and as with many software programs additional features are available not built into windows.
• After 18 minutes on the call, (he did not start to delete the profile until 30 minutes into the call) he told me he was looking on support.dell.com for the answer. The answers remember was about the Dell Latitude D630 & the Dell Software. It was not about the router.
• He complained a few times about not being able to hear. Probably given a bad phone and did not offer to call back ….
• He did not provide a case number or in the past, every dell rep has asked me to fill out a survey if I have time to help them out. I take the time out to fill out surveys when I have the time as it gives me the opportunity to rate the service and communicate it back to an organization, which is, suppose to be “about the customer”.
Here are my recommendations for Dell:
• Train your support representatives on your products, because even if they are new it does not mean it is going to work the same way as the older model.
• It took a long time for the tech to dig it out from support.dell.com. If I went digging for it, it would have taken me hours to do I am sure. Make it easier to search for what you are looking for. 15 minutes to find a document to fix the issue is not acceptable. The document referenced here said to use windows. These are things I’m already familiar with but since it’s your software I figured their was a reason why it was installed. Quite frankly it looks like some crapware that I don’t need, if the document says please check “Use Windows to manage my wireless network” http://www.support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/P94583/en/index.htm
• In the past, dell provided support case numbers. I spoke to both an escalations manager to today and he had no idea what the case was about. He wrote the following to me (remember the system is in NJ about deleting and adding a profile setting in dell software)
My name is XXX and I work at the Dell Headquarters in Round Rock, Texas. Currently...I see where a call in to Gold Tech Support took place earlier today (around 3pm CDT), where a Motherboard replacement is being sent to "XXX" in San Antonio. I'm not seeing exactly what is or is not taking place for this system...however, due to the new age of the system, I would like to offer a system replacement, if part the will ship out overnight, does not work out. If you would please follow-up with me on exactly what is taking place, I will be more than happy to assist you with this.
My computer works fine, why are they sending me a motherboard to an address that I do not know about a wireless network issue. He eventually wrote me back another e-mail that states:
I have a placed a note in the dispatch for this part that "was not" shipped to you, where the dispatch is DPS #092300072. I have placed the following in the note:
"This part "was not" setup correctly, where the end customer is actually in NJ, and not TX. Please expect this part to be coming back to Dell, since the end system is in NJ, not TX."
If anyone at dell is reading this and wants to contact my office tomorrow, the case number assigned by the person above was 2100204. At this point, the user who has the system is fed up and wants to send the system back. Nobody at Dell has yet to provide me with the returns procedure for sending it back.

Rechargeable Batteries

In quite a few recent posts, there have been frequent mentions about the need for Rechargeable batteries for use within the Wireless Kit (Wireless keyboard and mouse) for starters.
My idea is for Dell to start shipping out USB Batteries.
These revolutionary USB batteries can be used in any normal Battery devices and can be simply recharged by plugging them into the USB port.
Future products from this company include: new battery formats, and batteries for mobile phones, cameras and other devices.
