Undertake a real customer survey

Service and Support submitted by badblood 04/07/07

Undertake a real, customer survey to see what people want in their computer, from the browser, to the OS.

Linux users have had their say on this website (actually probably every Linux user in the world voted - all 200,000 of them), but what do the millions of other Dell customers want. Do they want change for the sake of change. Is there a question you can ask that shows how Linux is better than Windows. Do most computer users even know what Linux is? 1 Comment »

New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 04/08/07

The Auto Industry has run out of ideas to improve the basics of cars. Mechanics have stalled and they just can't improve on the wheel. So they are desperately adding gadgets to vehicles, from iPod docs, to satellite navigation, cup warmers and vibrating seats.

Keep up with latest vehicle developments. Develop special Dell components for cars. 1 Comment »

Increase the Salary of all Dell Staff - except senior managers/execs

Dell submitted by badblood 04/08/07

Dell profits are grand, even during low seasons. Give a little more back to all those people that make it possible - DELL EMPLOYEES! And I don't mean a bonus, I mean an honest to god meaningful salary increase. Include in that all the Dell Dudes working in call centres around the globe.

Go DELL! 56 Comments »

Make them LOVE TO WORK AT DELL!

Service and Support submitted by badblood 04/09/07

Up the stakes and make Dell a 'desirable' place to work. How do you do that, well attractive packages help, so does the 'cool' factor. 'Cool' means a creative and colorful environment - lava lamps, and a management team that dresses modestly and roams among the plebes. A place where creativity, individuality and individual work performance are praised and measured and rewarded. A place where there is genuine encouragement and mutual support. Right now, Dell is about as hipp as the Dept of Transportation! It makes me shudder to think of all the suits down there...

There are too many ideas...

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 04/10/07

There are so many ideas and so many pages on this site, that ideas get pushed off the 'recent ideas' first few pages as new ideas are submitted, or ideas that are not among the 'popular ideas' get less attention and thereby less votes. People simply do not wade through the pages to the middle. The upshot is that no idea will ever reach the lofty heights of the first few that were generated at the beginnings of ideastorm - i.e., Linux, openoffice.org, and the rest.

The moderators need to have a look at this. One way is to remove ideas that have been implemented. Fortunately for all of us, this is idea number 1 (linux) and about a trillion duplicates. Please shift them into a new section called 'Ideas Being Implemented', with an explanation of how they are being implemented.

(please note: This idea is also a duplicate, but it needs to because the originals are somewhere in the middle of the storm and no one votes for them anymore.)

PROMOTE this idea to remove from ideastorm those ideas which are being implemented to a new section.

DEMOTE this idea if you really don't care.

DON"T VOTE either way if your really, really don't care. 2 Comments »

Offer the Dvorak Keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 04/11/07

The Dvorak keyboard is an ergonomic alternative to the layout commonly found on typewriters and computers known as "Qwerty". The Qwerty keyboard was designed in the 1870s to accommodate the slow mechanical movement of early typewriters. When it was designed, touch typing literally hadn't even been thought of yet! It's hardly an efficient design for today's use. By contrast, the Dvorak (pronounced "duh-VOR-ack", not like the Czech composer!) keyboard was designed with emphasis on typist comfort, high productivity and ease of learning -- it's much easier to learn! There were several variations in the Dvorak's design in its first few decades, but these were settled when the American National Standards Institute approved a standard for the layout of the Dvorak in 1982. The diagram above shows the standard layout as adapted for PC use. 13 Comments »

Get a Mascot

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood 04/11/07

Many popular consumer electronics companies have mascots that their customers can remember and identify with. Microsoft has the paperclip and the 'blue screen', Apple has the Apple, Sun has well the Sun, the USA has the Bald Eagle, there's those cavemen and the gecko from some insurance company, and so on.

Part of Dell's problem is it doesn't evoke any image, except computers. There is nothing fluffy for us to identify with, to sing songs with children, to encourage us to spend. Originally mascots were to bring luck, now they bring IDENTITY. Dell needs a Mascot 46 Comments »

Promote the advancement and involvement of women in computer use and design

Education submitted by badblood 04/16/07

In the United States, the number of women represented in engineering and information technology peaked in the late 1980s. Since then, the percentage of women in the computing profession declined from 35.2% in 1990 to 28.4% in 2000. In computer science in particular, there has been a dramatic drop in women earning bachelor's degrees. A report from the Computing Research Association indicated that the number recently fell below 20%, from nearly 40% in the mid 80s. Research has shown that many misperceptions about computing persist and may discourage women.

Braille computer monitor

Monitors and Displays submitted by badblood 05/03/07

A tactual computer monitor includes rows and columns of rectangular cells. Each cell includes four rows and two columns of movable pins which are felt and read by a blind person. The pins are driven by electromechanical impact drivers and are held in position by resilient elastomeric cords. The impact drivers are carried on a bi-directional printhead which travels beneath the movable pins. An erasing mechanism is provided to positively drive the pins downwardly to erase the characters produced by the printhead. Comment »

ubuntu on my computer: open source for education

Education, Linux submitted by raymako 03/23/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

I am a french teacher working in the south of France .The school's computers are Dell and Nec computers.
Like most of my colleagues, I am using "opensource" (free) softwares, and specially Ubuntu for 2 years.
It works perfectly and the pupils who tried Ubuntu like it very much. I hope it will be possible to buy a Dell computer without Windows very soon and I hope that all the Dell computers of my school will use Ubuntu.
Not only because Ubuntu is free (even if it's not insignificant in a french school...) , but because working with Ubuntu forces you to understand and to think how and why you are using your (Dell) computer.
I know that I'm speaking and writing english language like a spanish cow, so I'm sorry.
I just want to finish my message with this: please be the first big computer manufacturer offering Ubuntu or Windows (which is very performant, but not the only one and specially at school) .
