Internally Dell might have it all together, but externally the Dell Laptops need a makeover. Compared to Sony's Laptops and Mac Notebooks, Dell looks like old uncle Tom in gray and back. Although they are a nice color combination, it would be awesome to see them in a better, more sleeker design. This wouldn't be hard to do for a company like Dell. 1 Comment »

Okay Dell, of couse you have had many succesions in your past, but: Welcome to the future. Look at the soft-core and hard-core apple fans, what is so catchy about a mac, an ipod? The design and most importantly, the LOGO. And look at Dell, look at the logo, I mean common' Dell just admit it, you logo's ugly. But Apple, a simple, wordless, picture of an apple with a curved bite. An instant classic that we remain through generations. Support Drivers for older Dell models on Ubuntu

I bought my e1505 under a year ago. I installed ubuntu myself shortly thereafter. I have an ati graphics card and a draft-n wireless. I love linux and ubuntu, but to install linux I have to use some hacks to get everything working. If dell is going to be offering ubuntu now there should be downloadable drivers for those who purchased their computers within the last two years. In my case I b elieve that everything on my laptop is still offered on the e1505. Just an idea. 2 Comments »

We want more variety of desktops and notbooks pc with UBUNTU linux pre-installed. And also to get a more significant difference in linux products than windows ones (no just $50)

The Windows o.s. is much more expensive than UBUNTU linux o.s. !!!

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Keep Ubuntu computer on the selves for at least a year

I don't know what your plans are Dell, but I know some companies often run experimental campaigns like your one with Ubuntu for just a couple months before deciding if it's a success or not. I'd recommend keeping Ubuntu available as an option for at least a year or more before shelving it (shouldn't cost you much to keep it) because that way you would give a better chance to plan on buying a Dell computer for their needs instead of some other one that they would have gotten otherwise, and it would allow more time for the word to spread to non-linux users about the "cheap new Dell computers," especially since it doesn't seem like you're trying hard to advertise them anyways 5 Comments »

Get the facts about Ubuntu

Dear Dell:

Thank you so much for offering GNU/Linux preloaded, but please, provide your clients with accurate information about this operating system:

1.- You said: "For advanced users and tech enthusiasts, we’re happy to offer a new open-source operating system"
Grab an everyday computer user and ask him to use Ubuntu. Then ask him how difficult it was for him to use it. Even monkeys can use Ubuntu!

How do you know that those who asked you to offer GNU/Linux preloaded are advanced users and tech enthusiasts? Please, show me your research.

2.- You said: "A downside is that some open source software requires intermediate or advanced knowledge to use".

Just like proprietary software!

- Do you think Windows bluescreens are easily dealt by an everyday computer user?
- Among Windows users it's quite normal to reinstall Windows once a year (at least)... Is it easy for them?
- Do Windows users get rid of adware, spyware and viruses easily?
- Is it easy for them to setup and use firewalls (a must-have in Windows)?

3.- You said: "may not be compatible with the same software applications and hardware as Windows operating systems'

You should add: "However, a huge amount of hardware works out-of-the-box on GNU/Linux, unlike Windows. Also, installing software on GNU/Linux is far easier than Windows".

If you're going to keep that message against GNU/Linux, please add this one about Windows: "Windows may not be compatible with the same software applications as GNU/Linux distributions and some hardware will not work out of the box on Windows, unlike GNU/Linux. Also, you don't have to worry about badware if you use GNU/Linux and you would enjoy freedom in computing, unlike Windows".

Why do you only talk about GNU/Linux drawbacks? Is Windows perfect in your opinion?

By the way, why is it so hard to find a GNU/Linux preloaded computer on your website?

Lighten the load and brighten the display.

I have a number of Dell laptops and what made me eventually buy a Macbook Pro was the lightweight and bright display. Of course, I could have never made the switch without Parallels, but after trying a MBP, I now know what's wrong with Dell's.

1. Too heavy. My MBP is light, svelte, and has great ergonomics. Dell needs to really trim the weight and shrink the box.

2. Too many choices and none of them are right. Apple, as an example, gives you far fewer choices and many less configuration options. Time to reduce the clutter and simplify the choices. I recently configured a XPS 1210 and by the time I was done, I couldn't remember all the options and canceled the order.

3. A nice bright, clear display can win the notebook war. I had a ACER 8104 and couldn't use it cause the display was so bad. The D620 and D820 are better, but not by much.

4. If you really want to start selling laptops, come out with a high end, less configurable, business laptop. Haven't you heard, we business people pay a premium for an Apple laptop and we're happy with them. Lenovo has stumbled with their Thinkpad line and I've just about given up on them. This would be an ideal time to come out with a very high end model for the business traveler. I'd order one right now if it was spec'd right and was lightweight with a great display.

I'd really like to see Dell back on top, but with what you offer me, I'd rather see you sell out to Apple. Get a new design team and get in the game! Believe me, there are users out there ready to spend upwards of $ 3K for a great laptop. 1 Comment »

Help create Open Source drivers - employ or hire a few developers

The Open Source market is growing - fast.
Dell should invest a small amount in this, in order to gain a huge market share and sales.
Employ or hire a few Open Source developers to create drivers for your products (for Open source operating systems).
Make sure that
- you support as many of the Open Source OS's as you can (Linux, *BSD, others)
- the drivers are completely open sourced (no binary blobs)
- that you take a long time view on this and support the drivers for as many years as you can
- you create open source drivers for ALL new products
- there are no strings attached to the use or further development of those drivers (ie. use an acceptable FOSS license)

IdeaStorm feature: Allow us to browse based on the Dell-assigned tags

Dell assign "status tags" to some of the popular/notable ideas on this website, but they are tiny little things under the title of each idea, and there is no way to search or browse by them.

If we had a page on IdeaStorm so we could see ideas based on each status tag it will let everybody see what effect IdeaStorm is having, in addition to the few ideas mentioned under "Ideas in Action". It might also reduce the number of duplicates for very popular ideas, if people can see what Dell has already acknowledged.

The status tags being used at the moment are as follows:

- Acknowledged
- Already Offered
- Coming Soon
- Fixed
- Implemented
- In Progress
- Not Likely
- Not Now
- Under Review (formerly, Under Consideration)
- Partially Implemented

I propose that Dell puts a large counter in bold on http://linux.dell.com which shows the number of Dell machines sold with Gnu/Linux on in realtime.
