Threre is not point in sticking with old fast ethernet, particularly, when gigabit ethernet is so cheap. Use gigabit ethernet in all your products. 5 Comments »

HDMI on all laptops

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by blackkitty 06/27/07

I would like to see all Inspiron laptops have HDMI connectors standard, or at a minimum make it an option on the 17" screen version. 3 Comments »

DVI or HDMI out on all laptops models?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tommarnk 07/06/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

this would be a big jump, if dell add "DVI out" on all dell laptops, so people can connect to there LCD Displays or LCD HDTVs natively

the picture quality will be grealy improved

this should be easy to do as most of new chipsets has dvi out

not many laptop manufacturers add "dvi out" to there lower end products, so it might be a wise move to do so

all LCD monitors and lcd hdtvs has dvi or hdmi in so it might work well

and meybe remove the old VGA out and put a singel DVI-I, it can be used as analog (VGA) to, by using VGA-to-DVI-I adapter like tose used on

standard computer graphic cards for years now

many people like me connect monitor via dvi or hdmi to get the best picture and color quality

The offerings for the XPS M1730: Dual-link DVI-I (support for 30-inch displays) and HDMI via DVI adapter. Check out all the specs for the new systems.

DVI for Notebooks

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by dellmanfred 02/20/07

I cannot understand why we still have to be punished with these vga plugs build into notebooks. Who's actually buying a CRT monitor these days so that he/she would need a vga plug?!?!
On top of that it must be cheaper too to have a straight digital ouptut without a D/A converter. So please, get rid of the vga plug and put a proper DVI plug into your notebooks. For the sake of our eyes!!!! 10 Comments »

Drive adoption of up-to-date hardware (no more legacy ports!)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by fabricationarbory 02/19/07

There's an analog VGA port on my brand new Latitude. A serial port. A 56K modem. This is on a laptop purchased in 2006!

Where's my Firewire, my digital DVI, my optical audio-out jack? My Mom's iBook seems more advanced than my $3000 Latitude.

I'd like to see Dell building ALL of its desktop and notebook machines, even the cheapest, with up-to-date hardware interfaces.

Beyond that, take the lead! Standardize smart-card readers and fingerprint readers on both consumer and business machines. Maybe microphones and webcams on consumer models. Drive adoption of these technologies and see where it takes you. Show some vision.

I know that businesses want backwards compatibility, and that's what converters are for. Need a serial port? Order a $5 USB-serial converter. Got an old monitor? $2 DVI-to-VGA thingy.

Come on, Dell, use your market position and drive adoption of up-to-date hardware standards! 9 Comments »

USB and headphone ports on or near the front of laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theblackcat 02/17/07

Having the USB ports near the back of the laptop is a pain. It would be nice if there was a little flip-down panel on the front edge of the laptops that had 2-4 usb ports, a microphone and headphone port, and maybe a firewire port. Currently the front of the laptops is just wasted space. The cover would prevent it from looking ugly or getting damaged when not in use. Especially with the growth of thumbnail drives having easy access to USB ports is essential. Having them near the back on the side is very difficult, as is having the the headphone and microphone ports so far back. They are also much more likely to get blocked there. If the fold-down panel was near one corner, or better yet one at both, it would not interfere with existing docking solutions, either. The vents that are currently in the front in some models and elsewhere in others could then be moved to the sides where they are closer to the heat-producing components anyway.

Alternatively, the ports could still be on the side, but near the front corner of the side as opposed to the back corner. That way they would not be blocked when the laptop is actually on your lap. A flip-down panel protecting them would not be necessary in this case.

Or combine both, with a flip-down panel on the front near the left corner and open ports on the right side near the front corner. The headphone and microphone port would most likely be on the side, along with probably 2 regular USB ports, a mini-USB port, and 1 firewire. The ones on the front would probably have another 2+ regular USB ports, 1 mini-USB, and 1-2 firewire. An additional eSATA port could be placed on the side near the back corner where the side USB ports currently are, since that would not need to be accessed as often.

A flip-down panel can't be that expensive, large ones are already present in many desktop brands.

Note: This would not involve getting rid of the ports on the back, only the ones on the side (maybe). The ones one side, at least in latitudes, are near the back already, only about two inches from the ones on the very back. So the ones on the back are not that much harder to get to than the ones on the side as it is. 5 Comments »
