Illuminate, Improve 64-bit Vista support

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by gregw 04/10/07

I paid for a high-end Dell laptop and have made it last for the last five years. I want to future-proof my next laptop purchase and take advantage of some of the 64-bit Vista security capabilities. So I'd like to be running 64-bit Windows Vista (Business) and I've learned I'd need to have a 64-bit-capable CPU like the Core2 Duo.

I would like Dell to make it clearer on its website and configurator (and/or at, say, 64bit.dell.com):
- Whether 32-bit or 64-bit Vista is installed by default (I strongly presume 32-bit)
- Whether 64-bit Vista is available from Dell... does it come on the installation CD if I reinstall the OS? Can it be preinstalled with 64-bit Vista?
- Which of the system's options do or don't have 64-bit signed drivers?

I'd also like to understand the current status and/or roadmap: I don't know if Dell is semi-supporting 64-bit Vista now, will support it once the April 21 machines come out, will support it in Q3 or maybe not till Vista SP1 or maybe Dell doesn't expect it to be an issue for a few years? What expectations can I as a customer have?? 5 Comments »

Dell should upgrade customers with Windows Vista 32bit to Windows Vista 64-bit for free

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems submitted by helmecj01 12/26/07

I think Dell should upgrade customers with Windows Vista 32bit to Windows Vista 64-bit for free and with all the new product Dell have to Windows Vista 64-bit drivers as well or Windows XP Pro 64-bit drivers.

On all new Dell computer have preinstall Windows Vista 64-bit 4 Comments »

Put the 64bit drivers back up. You will lose a lot of customers by doing this.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by majortom1981 10/24/07

You should put back the 64bit drivers. Just look on dig, your own forums, and on NEOWIN.net. People are upset at this. We are the people who recommend your computers to people who dont know any better. We buy your computers for our companies.

If you are going to do this to your consumers we will go to companies like hp . 1 Comment »

64 bit drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jjkoch 08/14/07

It's sad to see all these core 2 duo's out there and no one is using 64 bit XP or Vista. this is mostly because of driver issues. So Dell, since there is plenty of proprietary tech in your notebooks, it would be nice to have a CD or dvd with all the 64 bit drivers you would need for your system to come with your brand new Dell. That way in case someone may want to upgrade they are ready to go. 4 Comments »

64 bit operating systems

Desktops and Laptops submitted by jeffcityjon 02/20/07

If your processor is 64 bit (Core 2 duo), then you should have the option of receiving the system pre-installed with a 64 bit OS. 5 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

No Extra Software Option

Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Automatic Dell Update Notifications.

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by davidshq 02/16/07

It would be really nice if Dell had an automatic update program for servers, desktops, and notebooks. It should be highly configurable but notify a user when a new firmware or driver upgrade was available. This would help users keep their systems patched. How many grandmas and grandpas are going to go looking for new drivers or firmware for their SATA hard drive? 11 Comments »

Automatically Check For Dell Driver Updates

Software submitted by mabeaver 09/27/07

Write some software which automatically checks your system and offers you the latest drivers, bios & utilities.

This would save a lot of time and effort for companies who do not use the Dells default installation image.

IBM have some software to do this and it works very well. 6 Comments »
