Don't Get Rid of PDA's

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by scotty750 04/29/07

I realize fully that demand for PDA's has dropped. But many of us out there still use and plan to continue using straight PDAs. Here's Why.

I carry 2 cell phones and a PDA with me at all times. Yeah its a bit of a pain but, if I lose or break a phone, I can survive. If I lose or break my PDA, well I can go to paper for a couple of days until I replace it. HOWEVER, if I had a Smartphone (phone and PDA in one) and broke it, I'd be without BOTH devices and would be totally screwed for days until I got it replaced. I can live without one or the other, I can't live without both at the same time.

I much prefer the hassle of multiple devices to the cataclysmic failure of having neither at the same time. 3 Comments »

SDHC firmware update for dell axim pda's

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by simpsonsfan 04/03/07

Currently, dell axim pdas are limited to 2GB SD cards. A simple firmware update to add SDHC support would allow 8GB+ cards to be used with them. 9 Comments »

Provide 3rd Party WM6 and WM5 Upgrades for X51v

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by kbachler 08/10/07

Recently, users have developed ROM A17 for the Dell Axim X51v using AKU 3.5.2. Users have also developed a beta (near release) of WM6, including SDHC support.

Apple is a company that "man-upped" and provided -- even promoted -- Boot Camp to its users - software put together by 3rd parties -- rather than fighting such software.

While we realize Dell may be concerned about liability (they can disclaim) we hope that Dell will only not attack the users who have brought improved value to Dell customers on their own -- but we further hope that Dell would be supportive of the effort (although not offering official support -- no one would expect that.)

As a user, I hope that Dell will "bless" the recent ROM A17 and WM6 for the Dell Axim. 4 Comments »

Make an Axim with a bigger screen

Broadband and Mobility, Monitors and Displays submitted by tmcqueen 02/23/07

Wouldn't it be great to have a real tablet that you could use to take notes on? The reason that tablet PCs didn't take off was the price. I would love to see a handleld PC/Mobile device that had a screen that was big enough to use! Why do all Windows Mobile (or PalmOS, etc.) devices have to be 3x5? You can't do anything comfortably on that. I would like to see a Windows Mobile device that has a 5x8 or even an 8.5x11 display. Comment »

Handhelds

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by bgreer 05/15/07

I want do a editorial but I will let you know that I am not happy with your doing away with the hand helds. You make the best and I will not but any other company's product . I currently own the older but reliable Axim x5 it is still working just like new. My wife has the new version which I was looking forward to moving up to.

I am deeply sadden by your choice to do away with this AWESOME line of products. If you have one of the higher end handhelds laying around and want to sell it I would love a shot at it.

P.S. I own a Dell laptop as well. I believe in your product.

Respectfully
Bl Greer. 2 Comments »

Keep AXIM 51v...just upgrade it....would be AWSOME !!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by pillsbury 10/08/07

I want an Axim X51V that can make phone calls! Why not be able to have your cake and eat it too? I think Dell could market the PDA phone like they did the Axim line (and iMate is) by having different form factors and performances to chose from. The phone I desire, that is not made YET, would have the following essential specs listed in no particular order:
1. 3.5" VGA screen for viewing excel, word and pdf documents with tv out functionality
2. Fast processor, 520 mhz or better
3. GPU
4. Dual memory slots, preferably one of them being CF (for my 12g card), so I can watch movies, listen to music, iGuidance maps etc. and ability to recognize a SD, Mini SD, or Micro SD card larger than 2gs.
5. No QWERTY keyboard, I'd rather slim it down
6. WM 6
7. Quad band phone, triband is useless in the US
8. Obligatory bluetooth and wifi with the latest specs
9. A 3.5mm audio jack, not the mini usb jacks coming out now, for my Shure E2C headphones
10. 2gs of ROM
Desired features:
1. On board GPS receiver
2. FM radio
These specs are basically an improvement of the O2 XDA Flame or an Axim X51V that can make phone calls along with a couple of other features that were speculated to have been incorporated in future Axims. I'd shell out big money for this device but given Dell's past record of being able to control costs I'd bet that they would be a major player in this market.
This would be a rockin system, would sell like Hot cakes !! 1 Comment »

A new handheld PDA line

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by genjinaro 02/25/07

With the recent talks of Dell ending the Axim line of PDAs, it has hit our community hard.
Being that Dell has produced one of the most powerful handhelds ever manufactured and to this day few have come close to the hardware specs of this small but powerful unit. Even to this day it is recognized as the most powerful stand alone PDA in the market, the Axim X51v.

My proposal is that Dell continue to stay in the handheld market, it doesn't have to be a stand alone PDA, since recent models are now PDA phones. I'd love to see Dell make 2 different types of handhelds, 1 being a PDA type, and the othe,r a PDA/UMPC dual-unit with 2 Operationg systems, Windows Mobile & Windows Tablet (Vista).

In my honest opinion I would love to see a Dell handheld keeping both the CF & SD slots (favored but not necessary) with updated hardware and a Windows Mobile 6 or greater OS.
The twist is, is that each would have the same hardware specs but a different form factor, one similar to a traditional handheld and the other as a mini tablet form.

As for the PDA/UMPC dual unit, this would really make up for the current UMPC's downsides, one of them being the fact that you simply cannot effectively use a UMPC with instant on and good battery life and you don't have the same speeds as a mobile OS does. On the oither hand when using the mobile OS isn't enough for your specific tasks you can switch to the desktop OS ala the UMPC side of the unit.
I'd love to see a Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS & a Windows Vista Business combination all in one dual-unit.

I would also reccomend an Optional Dock Disk Drive Stand for CD/DVDRW etc. or similar to those lines for the PDA/UMPC dual unit.

I would also count the PDA/UMPC unit as being the high end unit in comparison to the PDA/ phone type unit.

I would direct the PDA type to college students & the UMPC/PDA type to business users. Also I would recommend bluetooth keyboards and mice with both, as separate purchase accessories or in bundle packs for fair pricing.

If priced competitively well as you have did the Axim I can see a future here.
They would also make for good display items at Dell Kiosks.
Keeping a price range of $400-$980 would be ideal, much bettter than what current competitors offer.

I'm sure the handheld community will agree, Dell shouldn't leave the handheld market, Dell is a powerful name in that community...

DON'T KILL THE AXIM PDA's platform

Broadband and Mobility submitted by optical10 02/23/07

The world leading x51v WM5 device is only now being bettered by HTC's future "Advantage” PDA / Smartphone matching the Axim 624 MHz power etc 2 years after the party started by Dell's forward thinking product!

Yes it may need to have GPS, EDGE, 3G etc to survive as a Smartphone in this mobile obsessed times but it can be done & the current Axim users will appreciate your efforts into the WM6 platform by buying your products if you reward their loyalty.

Obviously this may be previous if you’re not killing the Axim but most forums think you are so hence this post.

Ron Garriques ex - Motorola were counting on you.

Cheers

ps. For those who require other combi options like say PDA only I request the modarator to open a poll on this topic.

1. PDA only
2. Smartphone
3. PDA + GPS inc
4. Smartphone + GPS

I'm presuming it's a given on the two slots [CF/SD] staying in any of it's incarnations above as we have grown attached to their functionality as is also the case with BT & WiFi. Does much have to change for the Axim x51v to change to bring in inline with the soon to be released crop of WM6 units, I think not if the HTC WM6 units are any thing to go by. Heck the iPhone would also have some way to go to beat my current Axim x51v + Audiovox RTM 8000p voice & data CF card for phone usage. Plus don't get me started on all the add-on projects we at sites like aximsite.com have shared like afarre's X51V & Aximizer as Carputer: http://afarreAximCarputer.notlong.com & the Ratoc.com USB host controller CF card that allows me to use a 169 GB Seagate 2.5" HD portable battery caddy for ALL my media needs at home & on the go & soon a Logitech webcam! 28 Comments »

WM6

submitted by sjorge 04/27/07

My Axim x51v is great but WM6 would make it better.
A free update would be awsome but even one at a small fee would be great!
PS: don't cripple bluethooth if you do give Wm6 Comment »

Where is the Axiom?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by wilcoks 08/10/07

I work at kiosk and I still get a lot of people asking what happened to our PDAs. We had the fastest PDAs on the market but know one knew about them because it wasn't advertised. 4 Comments »

Revive Axim line, provide WM6 support

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by pdadigest 06/07/07

I too was dismayed that the Axim line was dropped. It is a great product that has fostered much loyalty among its users, who would very likely embrace an improved, more powerful, enhanced Axim line. Dell runs the risk of alienating many customers by dropping the Axim products. I would like to see Dell announce, at a minimum, Windows Mobile 6 support for the existing Axim X50/X51 products, so that the investment their customers have made in Dell products will be continued forward for a couple of years. Thank you. 4 Comments »

Axim - future and WM6

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by kbachler 05/01/07

1. I'd like to see a WM6 upgrade to the Axim X51v.
2. I'd like to see this line continue. I'm a former HP user and came to Dell because of the Axim. I am now looking at Fujitsu or HTC for my next device - probably a year from now.
3. I use the Axim nearly as a UMPC, and have looked at similar HTC devices. I'd like to see the following in a future Axim:

a) Continue with 2 memory cards, but both could be SDHC or 1 miniSDHC. I currently use 8 GB CF and 4 GB SD.
b) Cell connection with HSDPA
c) Bluetooth 2.0
d) Slightly larger device ok. mini keyboard nice, not required. Better way to attach extended batteries. Slightly lower voltage for charging if possible
e) Focus on being a UMPC. Add print drivers if needed. I use Softmaker, Textmaker, Westek Presentation (allows editing of PowerPoint also use Conduits pocket slides, Softmaker may come out with a new slide program - they could still be better than Conduits or Westek
f) Memory: 256 ROM, at least 128 RAM, prefer 256 if possible.

This would be a handheld UMPC. And it should be borderline doable now. Comment »

X51 WM5SE, Axim going is support also going?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support submitted by pedah 03/25/07

The Axim x51/51v is the most powerful PDA in the market today, that is not a combined device, will dell discontinue support when they have no more to sell? Will we as users see WM5SE upgrade, let alone WM6 upgrade released by dell? I would hope so, Don't leave faithful users high and dry. Comment »

Converged devices are too restrictive! I want my cell and PDA seperate! I love the Axim line and have been a staunch supporter for years. I'm sad to see it die. 4 Comments »

Put Dell Axim PDA Back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by daniel117 12/22/07

Dell Axim was introduced back in 2002, and recently dropped the PDA production recently on April 2007. PDA's are helpful devices and I wonder why Dell dropped the product so quickly. Of course Dell is better at desktops and notebooks, but it doesn't mean that they have to drop something Dell was new to. They are producing tablet PCs even though I hardly see them any where. Same should go with the Axim. 1 Comment »
