Are you a NO BODY

Advertising and Marketing submitted by phillipbb 11/23/07

IT would appear that DELL feels that the lowly consumer is a NO BODY.

After watching the latest TV commercial, hosted by Bert Renyolds, I was rather upset by being refered to as a NO BODY.

Fact is I feel that I'm a rather special person in that I was smart enough to have purchased a DELL product.
Michael DELL's success has been founded on the shoulders of the people and corporation that have bough systems from DELL. I for one am one of those that own a DELL desktop computer, although it is a bit old -- 7 years, and it's still running fine -- a bit slow, but running well.

However, being refered to as a NO BODY, makes me wonder, since I'm looking at buying a new computer, if an IBM, HP, Emachine or an Apple -- yuk, is in the budget.

INNOVATE AND CHANGE THE WORLD!!! build an appliance that functions as an appliance should.

Desktops and Laptops submitted by macosxuser88 11/23/07

i've got an idea for dell, and this goes out to all you dell fanboys, why try creating an innovative computer that doesnt follow the design of apple products, do you and the rest of the industry just not get it? Dell likes to give the image that they are the best pc you can buy, Seriously, the name DELL is just a name with a fancy case, just as hewlett packard or compaq, gateway, etc, all components are the same in all these other brands, somewhat including apple ex. EFI, people are not wanting to buy dells and all other brands because windows stinks, theres no reason to really buy other than apple, what other computer from the factory can you run both mac os x and windows with enough ease for average joe to install? and the DELL ONE, aka iMac with BLURAY, i wont go there, well, how i look at it , computers are an appliance, just like an oven or microwave etc, running windows with the fear of getting a virus or fear of messing up a computer is unnacceptable, how would you like it if your microwave worked have the time because of a software issue, virus etc. thats why i stick with macs and away from windows only computers, because its not the hardwre, its the software. Windows VIsta is microsofts attempt to visually appeal to customers without actually adding easier functionality. and zune is a joke, what is a zoon? anyways, thought id convince you to see the truth and that dell like all other pc brands just plain suck.... its about time apple woke the industry back up. micheal dell, you should invest in some apple stock as its worth is much more than yours. 33 Comments »

Oil Cooled PCs

Desktops and Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie 11/24/07

While Dell has been busy patting it's self on the back for the XPS 720 H2C the rest of the world has begun to move on. Oil filled computers are what people are talking about now. These PCs are cooled with vegetable oil which is non-conductive unlike water so it doesn't short out the PC. The oil also fills the entire case meaning the whole PC is cooled.

Inspiron 1420 with NVIDIA 8600m GT 256mb

Gaming, Inspiron products submitted by npauly 11/24/07

Please offer the NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GT 256mb as an option on the Inspiron 1420. Not all gamers want to lug around a 15 inch or 17 inch laptop.

Asus, Zepto, and BenQ all recently introduced 14 inch widescreen laptops that are configured similarly to Dell's Inspiron 1420 except that they come stock with the NVIDIA 8600m GT standard.

Dell needs to upgrade their 14 inch Inspiron laptop GPU options so they can remain competitive.

XPS M1330 design with 15" and 17" screens

XPS products submitted by dentedhelmet 11/26/07

I would love to see two new XPS laptops with the XPS M1330 design, but with an available 15" and 17" screen. I have been holding off buying a new laptop hoping to see these soon. I am leaning toward the the new HP laptops - much nicer screen, thinner, MUCH MUCH better looking. 6 Comments »

Optimize laptop chassis size - do not add dead space around of the LCD's edges.

Laptops submitted by mandarinka 11/26/07

One of the main constraints laptop design should heed is that of maximum portability and minimal size at the given LCD size category. Why? The LCD is actually the sole component taht cannot be shrunk (if so, we would have a computer from lower size category) - so the size of the display is the minimum for the chassis size. Now what I think good design shouldn't fail in: there should be as little "dead space" along the LCD's edges as possible. I have seen 15,4" laptops that waste more than 3cm of width this way, while the excess height of the lid is even bigger (with widescreen units anyway). Off course, the new Asus Eee is an extrme example of this: 7" display in 10" size enclosure.

I suggest Dell should make sure the components are aranged in as compact way as possible inside the laptop, so that the chassis isn't bigger than necessary. Every 1cm in excess greatly reduces the maneuverabilty of the computer, especcially with 15,4" and 14" widescreen models, 12" ultraportable models on the other hand benefit from every milimeter of size reduction, as portability is of most importance in their segment; the size reduction also brings the weight down a bit. 3 Comments »

Revamp the entire dell line from the ground up

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by matthew2142 11/26/07

If your gonna add a new line of desktops or notebooks to replace the current line up. Do a revamp. Meaning build the design from the ground up. We want fresh, new looks that stand out from the rest. Don't just add a new color, or some new buttons here and there. Redesign it! move key features around, create some class. Enough of the boring designs we had for the past 10 years. all in ones, add some glass borders with lights shining through them, may be some wood.... you know make them stand out. Of course these are just ideas, you can add your own here.

do the same with all your products, make them stand out, dont do a refresh, do a revamp! 9 Comments »

Vista won another CNet award. Put it on your "help me choose OS" page.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 11/26/07

Ever the Microsoft cheerleader, even Mike Dell can't stop himself from saying things about Vista. Perhaps I can help them by providing a link to yet another Vista award they can talk about.

I see here that Vista won yet another award. Top ten terrible tech products on CNet UK. Perhaps add that new CNet award to your "help me choose: operating system" pages to help people make a more informative choice. 6 Comments »

Any news about an M2030 notebook?

XPS products submitted by kanoneno 11/26/07

Hi, I´m a fan of the XPS M2010, and I´m really looking foward for a XPS M2030. I´m a visual artist and video producer and editor and music composer, and for what I do, the XPS M1730 has it all. The thing is that the 17 inch display is not enough or at least not comftable enough for working, thats why I prefer the 20 inch display. I really don´t mind about the weight and those issues because, no matter what, is better to carry around a notebook of those dimensions than a desktop of any weight and size. As I dont have a specific place to work like an office, I usually have to keep moving from one place to another.
Anyway, there are some things that I would like to see in a upgraded version of the M2010, that is:
- A WXUGA display - I noticed that a big discussion about this issue is in the mind of all the enthusiasts. I don´t know if it´s posible.
- At least 512 MB in the graphics card.
- The Ageia PhysX processor available in the 1730
- And higher processor speeds. I realize that this don´t depend on you but in Intel or AMD, Anyway I´m more than happy with the 2.8Ghz of the Intel Dual Core Extreme processor but it would be nice to see it rise.

I don´t know if any of this things are technically posible for the time being, but those options will really increase the performance up to the level of working really comftable with heavy tasks such as video editing and music composing. 9 Comments »

CD and DVD Jukebox/Changer

submitted by crunch 11/26/07

A USB connected 500 Disc Carousel Jukebox/Changer with included database software (with a slick interface) to search for ...AND PLAY... a chosen DVD title. Much like the "Imation Disc Stakka"...

The only things about this device that makes it fall short is that it doesn't PLAY the chosen disc, and it only holds 100 discs. I've seen this Stakka unit priced at a mere $99. Consider that you can pick up a generic DVD player at your local "Mart" for around $40... makes ya wonder why they stopped before they were finished. I think the combination of both would fit right into the HTPC entertainment system... which is why I found myself at this site! If there isn't such a device already available, there needs to be! dont gouge customers on price of software depending on model

Sales Strategies submitted by ordinary_user 11/27/07

Its unfair that Dell charges differential pricing for4 the same software (e.g. MS Office) depending on whether the product being configured is a notebook or PC.

Why should MS Office (same edition) cost 12-15% more if loaded on laptops versus on PC?? this smacks of nickel and diming customers and only makes me choose to buy it from retail rather than Dell. why lose the sale opportunity and cause ill feeling for such things?? 1 Comment »

XPS M1330 Laptop with Docking Station

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Small Business, XPS products submitted by matto 11/27/07

The XPS M1330 Laptop is a stunning laptop, but is also ideal for a lot of business people on the move. It's lightweight, it's thin, it's got a slot-loading DVD drive. Dell seem to recognise this by listing it as an option in the Small Business section (here on the Dell.com.au website at least). And they're right - it would be perfect for me, except for the lack of a docking station.

I use my laptop both at work and at home. I have a docking station at each location. This means I simply need to drop the laptop in, and straight away it's hooked up to the mains power, to my keyboard and mouse, to the wired network and to my secondary monitor. You can see how the lack of a docking station makes this process a lot more tedious. Fair enough - the keyboard and mouse can be replaced with bluetooth items, but there's still the network (no wireless at work), the power and the secondary LCD. This constant need to plug and unplug would soon take the sheen of an otherwise perfect device, not to mention the likelihood of damaging the delicate connectors with daily use.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to use the XPS M1330 for work, if only this one little problem could be overcome. I understand the challenges in packaging such a thin and light notebook, but I'm sure that greater minds than mine are able to come up with something!

I know I'm probably just a bit lazy, but the docking station really is one of life's little luxuries. I dare anyone who's used one previously to try and do without!

Thanks for the chance to put it forward.

Regards,
Matto :) 3 Comments »

How about a Dell XPS m1410 notebook?

XPS products submitted by bigkris 11/27/07

I have for some time now been looking for a new notebook. My criteria’s have been portability, long battery life, design and functionality. I find the XPS m1330 very attractive in all these aspects, but the size of the screen is just a little too small for my needs, and the size on the new XPS m1530 is a little too big, since the laptop loses to much of its portability. In my opinion, the perfect size would be a 14.1 inch. Alternatively, I have looked at HP Pavilion dv2600 series, but the battery life and the weight of these notebooks can’t really match the XPS.
In my opinion a XPS m1410 notebook would be the ideal laptop as it would have a great design, great specs, portability, and a large degree of functionality. 5 Comments »

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.
