Diagnostic device for automobiles

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by jamilhussain 02/16/07

Title : Diagnostic device for automobiles

Dell should enter in this huge market

Problem:

Currently whenever a car has a problem it generates a code …we have to take the car to auto shop they charge $75 to find out the problem by just hooking up a diagnostic hand held computer with the connector hanging out under the steering column. It takes only 5 to 10 minutes.

Solution:
1. If Dell develop a PDA size device which can permanently attached to the diag. port of the automobile and should translate the problem code into plain language and display it on the screen.
2. And in case when there is no problem in the car it will display the performance of the car.
3. I believe it will generate a lot of revenue.
4. We can bundle up with GPS system.

The whole product will consist on 3 components ( 2 physical and one service )

1. A PDA size device which will be connected to the automobiles diag. port.
2. A key which will be the license key connected to the device. (we can sell this key separately for each model of the car )
3. Pay per download diag. software from our website to that device ( which is also a big ongoing revenue generator )

What require:

1. A hand held PDA, GPS size HW device with special connecting port which can be connected via cable with car’s diag. port
2. A software development department which will manage all the diagnostic software ( may be purchase a similar company)
3. A support organization 3 Comments »

Put A DELL Direct store right next to all the APPLE stores!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by reg 06/27/07

Apple spent millions finding Retail Locations that generate large volume traffic and sell lots and lots of Mac stuff..

So, save money - where ever an Apple Retail store is located, put a DELL Direct store right beside it.

Have Apple trade in days so people can trade in their old G3 / G4 / G5 macs and get a real Intel machine that runs all versions of Linux and Windows, without any problems.

Where Ever Apple goes - be there to take their customers with low prices and better service. 10 Comments »

Two PCs in one box (I don't mean dual/quad core)

Desktops and Laptops submitted by si 06/28/07

1 box which contains two seperate personalities:

If you want to do light work like surfing the web and/or downloading files then press the green power-on button. This powers up a very simple processor, a reduced area of your LCD monitor, a light version of Windows/Linux and storage running on solid state memory e.g. memory stick. This means e.g. you can leave your big file downloads running while only using a fraction of the normal power required.

If you want to do heavy processing work then press the normal power-on button. This powers up all the things that eat power like 100% of your big LCD screen, fast processors/multi processors, HDDs, DVDs, high-end graphics cards and all the associated cooling fans etc.

Ideally the eco processor can even add an extra boost to the performance system when needed. What do you think? 19 Comments »

Sell Vista Starter Edition as an option.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/29/07

For those not familiar with it, Vista Starter Edition is a cheaper, less bloated version of Windows.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/starter/defau...

Windows Vista Starter provides everything you need to:Easily browse the Internet...Communicate with friends and family around the world...Listen to music and watch videos ...Use educational, productivity, small business, and other software designed for Windows

The Vista Starter restrictions of "no more than 3 applications at one time" are fine for me, since I can count on one hand (actually, one finger - Turbotax) the Windows applications I've ever wanted to run. And the fact that Vista Starter has graphics limitations (well, thanks to driver issues, all Vistas do) doesn't really affect TurboTax either.

It's rumored to be priced in the pennies; and since it's perfectly capable of doing everything I want Windows to do (run tax software once a year) - would be perfect for me.

For one more piece of evidence that this is a good idea: note that on the PCs that Microsoft themselves sells, they don't pick an overpriced version of Windows, they use Starter Edition.
http://origin.arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070627-microsoft-testing-pc-sal...< I know they didn't bring it to the US market yet - but for an important customer like Dell, they might do so. If Dell did offer this product for near cost, it would even convert me - who has only bought unix and apples for the last decade - to become a Windows customer.

So the Idea: Sell Vista Starter Edition for us light Windows users who only want Windows a few days a year. 7 Comments »

Support Microsoft's new streamlined process from Downgrading/Upgrading from Vista to XP.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/29/07

1. Better communicate to your customers the "Downgrade" (arguably "upgrade" is a better term from the customer's perspective, since it gives the customer what they want instead of something they don't) Rights that Microsoft describes here:

An OEM may facilitate the end user’s downgrade rights from Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate to a qualified version of Windows XP Professional (noted below) on the new computer system.
2. Use the new simplified downgrade process that Microsoft's enabling to make it quicker and easier to do

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=543
Under the current rules, OEMs must call about and file for each and every machine the license keys required to downgrade from Vista to XP. But Microsoft is planning to move to a new policy which will allow its top 170 OEM partners to submit these keys online for groups of machines, which will save them time and reduce complexity, Ball said.
For more: http://it.slashdot.org/it/07/06/29/1657256.shtml< Dell is in Microsoft's top 170 OEMs; so should be able to take advantage of this new simplified program. Since the process is less labor intensive, it should be less costly too.

I hope Dell passes down these savings to it's customers.

Dell and HP Unite!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by daniel117 06/29/07 **NOT LIKELY**

I was thinking of a merger of the two best-selling computer companies out there, HP and Dell. Merging these two together can do good, Dell can have more user-friendly and multimedia features while HP can have more financial support. And the power of these two can out-rival IBM. 11 Comments »

Offer A Free Downgrade From Vista To XP

Operating Systems submitted by huper 04/24/07

I for one have had it with Windows Vista. I find this software so full of bugs that I am spending more time transferring log files to Microsoft than getting actual work done. They are certainly not paying me for my time to repair their flaky software! When I got my Dimension E520 it came loaded with a 2.8Ghz Duo Dual Core Intel Processor, 2GB of RAM, 256MB on an NVIDIA card & 2 - 250GB hard drives. Surely this system would be powerful & I could focus on writing & getting work done quickly. But no, the slow speed of this operating system taxes the hard drives & CPU so they are regularly running at 75% & 89%. I have tried changing the swap file to use a different drive, removed non essential services as well as swapping out memory from one slot to another. I have used every OS both client & server since DOS 1.0 & this is by far the worst! (Except maybe BOB or ME). Dell wants to give users an upgrade to Windows Vista within a certain time frame. How about offering a downgrade to XP for people who don't want Vista? Otherwise I will be checking into which Linux version will best run on this hardware.
MCSE since 1996 & now an extremely disgruntled Windows Vista hostage! I will happily surrender my Windows Vista disk for one with XP it!! 18 Comments »

Stop gouging Windows Vista prices

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by cullend 04/29/07

Come on Dell! You charge an ADDITIONAL $200 to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. THAT IS ABSURD! We all know that you use OEM, as you are an OEM... The price for Windows Vista Home Premium is 111.99 from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116202) . For Ulimate OEM, it is 189.99 via (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116213) We all know Dell gets a way deeper discount, that is fine. But when you charge $200 for Ultimate, when the real price difference between the two is $78. Where does Dell get off charging a $200 difference?! Dell, lower the price of ultimate... 7 Comments »

Dual Boot XP and VISTA

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by tom 02/21/07

Due to the problems with Vista, Vista drivers, and Vista software compatibility, a dual boot system with XP and Vista should be the norm. An option should be provided to eliminate one or the other operating system at a later date. 1 Comment »

Not Vista Please

Operating Systems submitted by mhyst 02/27/07

Do whatever you want except preinstalling Windows Vista or any Microsoft future attempt to reduce our freedom.

I don't have any faith in DELL. You'll end up with Vista preinstalled.
Please, don't act as if you'd mind what buyers think. Most buyers are zombies after all.

Bye

PD: I forgot... My computer isn't DELL and I haven't any plan to became a DELL customer.

I've got already my compensation writing this message. Thanks 1 Comment »

XPS and Vista

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by malkir 03/09/07

Today my friend asked me what company I would recommend him buying a computer from, and looking over at my XPS Gen 5, I immediately said 'Dell!'

We looked at the XPS's, and noticed one very disturbing thing - unless he could pay the minimum $1,699 for the XPS 710, he would be locked into Vista. Now, I'm sure Vista is a "revolutionary" operating system, but in all honesty it has absolutely no appeal to us as gamers. Vista may or may not run our games, it may or may not like our OS optimizations and driver tweaks... so why should we buy an operating system that 'might' run games?

Personally, I'm happy to see that Dell is staying on the cutting edge of technology - but why completely dump Windows XP for an operating system that has only been out for a few months? What happened to the casual switch from XP to Vista? It's all too forceful. Comment »

XP Is A Better OS Than Vista - Vista Is Only An Income Generater

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by lancelot9201 04/21/07

When M$ relieased Vista, before HP even had a chance to develop drivers for their $500 laser printer, they did so in order to recoup some of their 5 yr. investment..
No other reason, its not a better OS.. Bill was only concerned with profit, not his customers.. Please expand your offering of XP to all desktop & lapton models.. 1 Comment »

Forcing Vista On US

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by am39053 02/22/07

There is a story on CNET today about hardware manufacturers only selling their newer models, (both Desk Tops and Notebooks), with Vista. http://news.com.com/Limited+choices+for+Windows+XP+holdouts/2100-1016_3-61612...
HP seems to be one of the biggest offender. It's even reported that Dell is doing this to some extent:

"Dell still offers Windows XP notebooks and desktops, but they can all be found under Dell's Latitude business notebook brand, with the exception of the XPS M1710 with the Blu-ray disc player."

I employ Dell not to follow suite. In addition to many initial documented problems with Vista, many businesses use professional applications, I.E. accounting and tax software, where the manufacturer of these applications have indicated they will not support Vista anytime soon. This is primarily due to the lack of programming resources on the part of these relatively small companies. Dell needs to continue to promote XP machines, both desktop and laptops, equally as they promote Vista machines. Especially their newest machines.

Stop forcing people in Ireland to buy Vista on low end desktops.

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jpl888 03/03/07

It seems the wind has been taken from my sails already on this one. I just checked the Irish Dell website and XP is an option now on Dimension desktops for small business, although it wasn't for approximately the last 2 months.

I am guessing there were so many complaints or sales dropped off so sharply that Dell backpedaled on it. I would however like to say this to Dell.

Who do you think you are trying to force an untried and untested operating system on small business users?

I am an IT consultant/engineer. I install Linux servers and Windows desktops in heterogeneous environments for small businesses. I maintain dozens of servers and hundreds of desktops, and thus far (since 2001) I have been recommending Dell. After this episode I am reconsidering my recommendation and I know I am not alone.

What I like about Dell:-

Ordering online.

Being able to forward shopping baskets to my customers so that they can order things themselves.

Cutting out the middle man.

Good quality machines at a reasonable price (if you don't buy all the extras).

What I don't like about Dell:-

Trying to force people into buying Vista (and Windows in general).

Making far reaching decisions with out consulting customers before hand.

Not offering an OS free option on ALL their machines and passing the saving on if customers avail.

Actively encouraging/capitulating with vendor lock in and the Microsoft monopoly.

I don't think it would be reasonable to expect Dell to support Linux straight off, BUT if customers are willing to install Linux and support the OS themselves or through Linux community forums they shouldn't be trying to prevent this by forcing Windows on everyone. Dell should take a look at these Linux community forums and realise how many people are using Linux with Dell PC's and servers and smell the coffee. 1 Comment »

All DELL Vista capable machines should have a flash card slot

Desktops and Laptops submitted by wictor 03/12/07

All DELL Vista capable machines should be equipped with a flash card slot (like for ecample XPS m120), preferrably located on notebooks so nothing sticks out. This would allow users to take advantage of the ReadyBoost function in Windows Vista, using for example SD flash cards instead of using big USB flash disks pointing out and possibly damaging the USB slots or the USB disk.
