Smartphone

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by gautam 02/16/07

The Dell Axim PDA is not super-popular, but I think if it moved into the SmartPhone realm (especially in order to compete with upcoming iPhone) then it could pick up some market-share and be a great device for US cell phone providers. 92 Comments »

Now that HD-DVD is thoroughly dead and buried it's time for Dell to take the plunge and start adding Blue-Ray drives to all of it's desktop and laptop products. 25 Comments »

Come on Dell, put together a stylish PC that would look good under the TV. It should have a massive hard drive to hold all the downloaded music and movies, blue ray dvd player, excelent graphic card/sound cards, wireless keyboard, remote control..you get the picture.

It should have a VDU where you could access music and movies without having to load the operating system.

people have been building these pc's for years

Wi-Fi Catcher on Laptop, what is the point

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by lukemcurley Mar 31

Can Dell re-consider the inclusion of their Wi-Fi Catcher application as I do not see the point of it over the standard Windows Wi-Fi manager. It is to no benefit to me, actually I have found myself turning off Wi-Fi by accident when trying to use it, which means I pushed the switch the wrong way.

Also there is not need to have a physical switch to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, your switch turns off both. This should be a software implementation, a small icon on the notification area of the taskbar which has the option to turn off bluetooth and wifi with a click. This will cut a fraction off the cost to manufacture each laptop too. 4 Comments »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime

Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese 02/17/07

Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.

Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it! 168 Comments »

Driver Storage - Built-In

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by leolonewolf_nw08 Apr 2

How many times have you lost the driver disc for some errant piece of hardware? Or can't seem to find the website to download the driver from? Or can't even get on the internet becuase your system has crashed and you have no other computer available?

The Solution: A onboard (motherboard) compact flash slot that is completely internal from the chassis (physcially accessible only by opening the case) that allows you to store and access a compact flash card, your choice of size, and be able to replace it if need be. This flash drive would act not only as a storage location for drivers, which can be preloaded from the factory, but also updated by the dell update software or the user if non-dell parts are added to the system.

Additionally it could also be designed to create a bootable portion for the computer in the event of a HDD failure.

You could even take this as far as adding a second slot that would allow for encrypted file storage, being that they would have to be small files and not excessive in quantity. 23 Comments »

Make all laptops have universal docking port.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jrhoesly Mar 25

Make all laptops, no matter what product line or series, use a generic built-in docking port instead of the different ports being used on various systems. This will simplify the docking options and hardware required for adding docking capability for home or office. 5 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.
