Stop gouging Windows Vista prices

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by cullend 04/29/07

Come on Dell! You charge an ADDITIONAL $200 to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. THAT IS ABSURD! We all know that you use OEM, as you are an OEM... The price for Windows Vista Home Premium is 111.99 from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116202) . For Ulimate OEM, it is 189.99 via (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116213) We all know Dell gets a way deeper discount, that is fine. But when you charge $200 for Ultimate, when the real price difference between the two is $78. Where does Dell get off charging a $200 difference?! Dell, lower the price of ultimate... 7 Comments »

Ask the customers, not the nerds!

IdeaStorm submitted by cullend 04/29/07

This isnt a rip on nerds/ geeks or people who use this site. The fundamental problem with ideastorm is that it is influenced by smart people, who have more time, and know more than the average customer. Why doesnt Dell make a runonce software, so on first bootup the user is presented with the top 10 ideas, and they can vote, or creat there own. That way, the real customers can decide! 8 Comments »

Shipping Costs

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by ohitschko 05/22/07

I think the price of a PC or a Notebook should be seenable at the main page with included shipping costs because so you can see how much the PC costs really. 1 Comment »

light up keyboards

Dell submitted by theonlyho 05/13/07

Maybe I'm not up to date, but since Apple has lighted up keyboards, it'd be awesome if laptops have lighted up keyboards also. It might be out on Dell now or not, lighted up keyboards are handy either way. 5 Comments »

re-embrace the 13.3 screen!

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jeffme 05/06/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I've always thought that the 13.3" screen was the ultimate laptop screen - it has a more eye-friendly dot pitch than the 12", isn't as ungainly or heavy as a 14.1" and it accommodates a wider keyboard quite easily.

Sony has it in the SZ series and Apple has it in the MacBook pro, but I'm a Dell guy - can you hook a brother up?
Check out the XPS M1330.

15" XPS Laptop

XPS products submitted by nosintake 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I think there should be a 15" XPS laptop. There are plenty of companies that have a 15" "gaming laptop". I think there should be a Dell XPS with a rotating camera, 1GB RAM, Blu-Ray player, and 80GB hard drive standard.

The XPS1510 - 15" Laptop with 512MB Video Card

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by greygabe 02/21/07

I know this may be a bit specific, but here are some ideas for a new XPS laptop. The XPS1710, kind of the cousin of the 1705, can be a bit heavy and unruley - so why not make a brother for the 1505, the XPS1510. A 15" laptop with the prized 512MB NVidea would appeal to many customers. It can be done. as ASUS and SAGER have already proven. The following list is more specific:

Core 2 Duo processors (similar selection to XPS1710)
Vista Sideshow monitor (as close to the ASUS at CES as possible)
Memory card reader
microphone built-in
wi-fi search function of the XPS1210
avalible 4GB of ram
At least 3 hours battery life
2 Headphone jacks (a very nice cheap feature)
hard button volume buttons (don't move to sliders like some companies)
hard switch for muting (can mute it before boot)
hard switch for wi-fi
Avalible LightScribe burner
7200 RPM hard drive
Battery meter on battery independant of computer
RESONABLE PRICE (every time Dell makes a computer they love the price is crazy, like the XPS 2010)

I know all of this is possible considering most the things are things that have already been done in Dell computers or others. The XPS1210 is an amazing size, but a lot of people would like to see a 15" with 512MB video. 8 Comments »

BOYCOTT VISTA!

Operating Systems submitted by reg 03/21/07

Dell Dudes,

Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.

The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.

US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.

The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.

Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,

The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.

Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.

Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?

BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!

If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.

Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?

Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista. 818 Comments »

6 major issues to be fixed by Dell

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.

1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.

2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".

3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.

4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.

5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.

6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company? 72 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Include power cord with Laptop Adapter Purchase

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dlevasseur 05/23/07

If you search and order a Laptop adater it does not come with a power cord to go from th wall to the adapter. The power cord is an additional $19.99 + Shipping.

Backstory:

My boss lost the power cord (Not the adapter, just the powercord) to our laptop in China. I talked with my Dell rep who thought I should order a new adapter. I searched the model number and placed the order.

Received the adapter... Just the adapter, not the cord. Now I have two adapters and no power cords. I call Dell and receive credit for the adapter and am told not to mail it back.

Look through the Mouser catalog and find the correct power cord for the adapter... $3 + $1.50 shipping. I immediately ordered two. Now I have two working adapters.

Looking through the Dell Reviews for Laptop adapters, this seems to be a common problem.

Dell: Add $3 to the price and include the power cord. Less headaches, and less free adapters given away. Given my above story... Thanks for the free adapter! 6 Comments »

Dell Logo Stickers

Advertising and Marketing submitted by jorge 05/23/07

Dell should provide a plethora of Dell Logo stickers with each system so its users can stamp them on their prized possessions to show their brand loyalty and show the world what they use for a computer.

Benefits: Dell gets free advertising, and when those rambunctious teens splatter them on the back of street signs, skateboards, surfboards, laptops, basketball backboards, cars, courthouses, friends, you name it. Dell will be entrenched in the teen market (the future purchasers and current technology pushers at home).

Hey Apple does it, so why not join the bandwagon, just put an environmental friendly disclaimer to ward off any lawsuits, but make the glue as good as krazy glue, we don't want them to fall off easily. 4 Comments »

Next step: most systems should have a choice of OS, including Linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 05/24/07

First step: offer Linux on -specific- systems
NEXT step: offer a CHOICE of OS on MOST systems

CHOICE is GOOD! Wouldn't it be SIMPLER FOR DELL to provide the same options for each class of system? So, a drop-down list of OS choices?

ONE web page for EACH model of system. SAME format for EVERY page! 18 Comments »

Retractable powers cords

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by rr 05/24/07

Dell Should start making Retractable power cords attached to the adapter especially for note books. This will prevent the users from winding the power cord around the adapter and fastening it using the rubber strap\belt. 6 Comments »

Nerd Discount + Support Option

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by dino 05/16/07

If a customer scores high on an optional technical quiz reward them with a nerd discount. Since Dell will be saving all that money on not having to support this type of user. Also the service tag could be flagged with a nerd alert so the technician only has to answer the phone with, “Hello nerd what part do you need me to send.” 36 Comments »

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us. 644 Comments »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Dual boot OS

Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by gpd 02/20/07

Could be great to have a dual boot OS, like Windows XP and Ubuntu. With a partition for shared data. It's not easy to do it on your own. 38 Comments »

Advertise Graphics RAM correctly

Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!)

Should read: 512Mb physical memory and it actually be 512Mb physical memory

NOT: 512Mb** and then some tiny asterixed disclaimer on a linked page that points out that the 512Mb is some funky combination of 3Mb physical and the rest being pulled from virtual memory - this kills many graphic intense apps and games...

suprised no-one has sued over this? Not sure many buyers are even aware....
