There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers
Software submitted by jervis961
08/23/07 **REVIEWED**
Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?
"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"
Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast
Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Terminal Service Home computing solution
New Product Ideas, Small Business submitted by dvorchak
02/25/07
As a software engineer I may at times be connected into 3 or 4 machines at any given time via terminal services, but I am almost always working from my laptop. The same for home use, I have a powerful home PC that sits in a corner that runs all of the software applications I need and has all the computing power I need but I perfer to cary my laptop around with me and just connect into my Destop/server through a terminal service session. So basically I have a 2000$ laptop that does nothing more then act as an access point into a much more powerful Destop or Server. With improved Wirless connections and terminal service technologies the terminal sessions are all I could ever need, they may not be suitable for gaming but I've never tried. I don't need the 2000 dollar laptop, but I like the portability and usage of the laptop. I'd like to see the extention of this idea into both the home computing and possible Small business/educational sectors.
I'd like to purchase a powerful Destop machine for my home, and then have the option to purchase " thin client laptops" for lack of a better name for an additional price, say 200 bucks.. that offer nothing more then a good Keyboard, a crisp LCD display, and are preconfigured to terminal into my desktop via a wireless connection. I could then buy one Powerful desktop, and purchase an "access laptop" for myself, My wife, My son, My daughter etc.. to have in there own respective rooms, without having to give them there own personal computer to have there own space to use when ever they want.
The same principle could be applied to things such as "laptop carts" used in schools. Having built many of those myself, they are almost allways overkill. a 5000$ server running 20 terminal sessions would be much easier to maintian and configure then 20 laptops at 800$ each. The server would have more then enough computing power to handle the computing needs.

PRODUCT (RED)
Advertising and Marketing, Desktops and Laptops submitted by smotchberry
02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
Dell should join the product (red) initiative - launching the first (red) desktop or laptop could go a long way in giving Dell a better social reputation than the seemingly horrible (perhaps somewhar unwarranted) one it's products seem to project now.
Launching a special edition XPS notebook might be a great start - but I don't see why it couldn't be transfered down the line to it's other products, such as the television or montior range, so existing (and non) Dell customers could take the plunge without feeling left out. Check out the Idea in Action to find out how Dell is partnering with (PRODUCT) RED.

Dell Thin Clients
Servers and Storage submitted by beijaflor
02/19/07
Dell is able to make full PCs for $359.
Imagine what would be the prize of "terminals" for thin client computing ... - a low-consuming processor at 500-700 Mhz - no fan design - on-board 128 Mb flash - on board 512 Meg RAM - VESA mountable - solid state architecture - PXE bootable
- Remote OS and application : http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9097 Or even Windows Terminal Server for small deployment if people have the money to pay it.
Thin computing answers to 75% of needs related to computers in school, librairies, hospitals and more ...
Dell could even sell the servers coming with the "thin-clients solutions" ...
I also see the Screen+Keyboard+Mouse option
And think about the network ... With modern thin-computing solutions, the deployments are made on a larger scale (thousands of terminals across fiber networks) and with thin-clients provided by a large company like Dell, the savings could be on the hardware AND on the software ...

Promote IdeaStorm/Dell Blog/Studio Dell on homepage!
Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by explorer5
02/18/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell should put links (or even those nice looking graphics at the top of all the ideastorm webpages) on the homepage, or even on most pages within the dell.com site.
Show people that Dell Cares, and is trying to make changes based on peoples comments, complaints and experiences!
The average user will never hear about ideastorm via an rss feed (which is where i found it) nor will they come across the dell blog since it is not promoted within dell.com (who is going to go to "about dell" and expect it to be there?)
Dell is doing a GREAT job of trying to get customer's suggestions, comments, complaints, and i feel that they really will put those comments into consideration for future products, improvments, etc... Why not promote it more?!
We do now have link on Ideastorm to the other sites and at www.dell.com, bottom of page "about dell" takes you to the front of the corporate information page where "Dell Communities" are featured. You can go here: www.dell.com/conversations.

Dell Linux Launch Page
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by reg
03/12/07
Have a Dell Page that lists Links to Linux Distro download sites.
The Dell Linux Launch Page would also promote on-sale Dell products for Linux (notebooks, PCs, printers, network cards, video cards, etc) - all 'Linux Supported Devices'. It's a market category as well as a Dell Linux branding strategy.
Laptops / PC come installed with a Fast, Small Linux install, under 100 MB.
Just big enough to quickly boot, find the internet, and display the dell Linux Launch Page. [I recommend a Dell modified version of www.puppylinux.org, www.knoppix.org, or www.vectorlinux.org ]
Then the User can keep to mini install and use it for internet browsing and web email and basic documents and graphics - or use the Dell Linux Launch Page to find and download a 'Full Sized' Distro.
IDEAS IN ACTION STEPS: 1. Dell Builds and Posts its own Dell Linux Launch Page EASY! 2. Dell selects one of the above mentioned small fast linux systems, and works with that community to customize a Dell Hardware version - auto detects all Dell Hardware. 3. Install that little Dell Distro on Hard Drives, and include a Live Boot CD copy with each computer. ( for system restores if their downloaded Linux doesn't work out...) 4. Now people can select Dell Linux as one of the choices for OS - and not pay for Vista! 5. New PC/notebook owners boot up their machine with Dell's little linux, opens with a Welcome Page with 3 links - Help files (on PC), Manuals (on PC) and Dell's Linux Launch Page (internet). There is plenty of money to be made this way, all they need to do is get on the ball... It also has the added benefit of Saving Dell System Build Times, and reducing costs!
Any less than 100 MB partition image will copy onto a Hard Drive and CD very quickly.

Website Dedicated to Linux Support for all Dell Model Computers
Dell Web Site, Linux, Service and Support submitted by jthurst
02/19/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**
A website that dedicated to Linux On Dell. Recommendations for xorg.conf file configurations and power management configuration/drivers. It would be great if Dell would dedicate some resources to Linux Support on Dell. When I think of what laptop to buy I think about which Vendor is the most Linux friendly or else what Makes and Model's seem to be working out best for Linux users. Dell laptops seem to have a lot of new powerful hardware that's tough getting Linux to work well on it. For example, the drivers/modules for getting the power management features to work and the Alps/Synaptic drivers and configuration tools is also tricky. The X-windows monitor and graphics card detection and auto-configuration doesn't work well on many Dell Models. Dell has an opportunity to do a lot for the Linux community and in turn the Linux community could do a lot for Dell. I used to have a Dell D600 and now have a Dell 620 and I'm always spending weeks trying to get everything to work properly.

Become the open source OEM
Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909
02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.
In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart
02/17/07
Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)
Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.
Would you try Linux if it were this easy?
