Music during initial setup

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by patrick72 May 12

Disable music during the initial setup of business class laptops.

I work in a shared office and every time I setup a new laptop everyone has to listen to the annoying music until setup is complete. I can't find any way turn it off, the volume and mute buttons do not work until I get to the desktop.

This may seem petty but my co-workers are trying to talk to customers and distractions like Dell startup music are not appreciated. Comment »

Start offering DELL products to the general public in Poland

Dell, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lukasz.wisniewski 11/12/07

According to today's local newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza [1], by 20th November, 11:30 to be more exact, Dell will just have manufactured their first notebook in Lodz, Poland. Unfortunately, even though I am inhabitant of this city, it is more than unlikely I will buy DELL notebook anytime soon.

Firstly, the current policy of your company in Poland is "Only for enterprises and institutions" (original in Polish: Tylko dla firm i instytucji). Such a approach seems to me to be more than just bizarre. Do you happen to realize Poland is something like 38 milions of your potential customers? Just for instance, in my city, there are two big public universities, several private ones - you see the universities but not the students. Is this of your concern? I guess not but Apple is already there offering discounts for students.

Secondly, start distributing preinstalled Ubuntu for Poland as well. I actually do not see the point why you do this in UK, Germany or France and not in Poland. People of Poland are more eager to install open-source products, just let me remind you that according to XiTi monitor [2] open-source Firefox browser has market share of 39.6% in Poland, whereas in Germany - 38%, France - 23.9% and UK just 18.7%.

Thirdly, by preinstalling Ubuntu I mean making it an option anywhere where there is an OS selection option on your website. I clearly see no reason in the world why you keep offering such a miserable Ubuntu notebook in Europe instead of something more powerful - Inspiron 6400n with Intel T2130 processor. In your opinion, how impressive is that nowadays?

Last but not least, DELL, please stop participating in this devoid of good sense campaign "Dell recommends Vista..." which is sarcastic. You really do not have to put down this sentence on your website as in Poland you force people to use Vista leaving no other choice.

Take all these remarks under your consideration unless it is OK with you that Poles should travel to Germany in order to buy your notebooks. Hear our voice, DELL!

Lukasz Wisniewski

Stop charging the battery when it is full

Laptop Power submitted by anordal 08/12/07

Make laptops that only connect power to the battery when the battery is in use. Disconnect when fully charged, and reconnect immediately when AC-power is unplugged. This would prevent overcharging, we wouldn't need to unplug the laptop from the wall socket or take out the battery, and we wouldn't need to worry.

This could be implemented by having two power circuits connected to the battery: The first has a simple one-way diode that lets the computer run on battery power but doesn't allow the battery to be charged. The other is the charging circuit that turns off when the battery is fully charged. This should not be expensive or require any software. 19 Comments »

Frequent Buyers Program

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by sgrabinar 02/26/07

I've nought two Dell notebooks in the last 7 years. Now, I'm wondering if I should be buying an XPS. Or a cute little iBook .

Maybe I should look at the Sony and Tosh too.

If that 4th or 5th Dell notebook were free...

If I could use my Amex or Qanats reward points at the Dell store _in conjunction_ with my previous Dell purchases....

Michael, all my bases would belong to you. 26 Comments »

Don't eliminate Microsoft Office 2003 just yet. Let us get both Office 2003 and Windows 2003!

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Software submitted by winoffice 05/10/07

OK, I know that I may be scolded by open-source software fans for saying this...but like Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2007 is also rather new and has its own problems, and until Office 2007 becomes at least a year old (if not longer!), I think that the following should also be offered (let us choose both the individual progams and the suites):

Suites (choices below):
None
Student and Teacher add $149
Small Business add $199
Professional Edition add $249

Individual programs (let us choose more than one if we wish):
None
FrontPage add $149
OneNote add $99
InfoPath add $199
Visio (choice of Standard or Professional) Standard add $199
Visio Professional add $499
Project Standard (choice of Standard or Professional) add $499
Project Professional add $749

For those who think that new software should mature before "digging in". I intend to acquire a new desktop as well as a notebook...and I want to make sure that I won't have to choose between Office 2007 and Open Office...instead, this way I will have what I need and want...choice, that is.

Besides, Dell was able to bring back Windows XP...so why can't it bring back Office 2003...? By the way, I would like to see Windows Server 2003 as another option as well -- see my article Preinstalled Windows Server 2003

Since Office 2003 runs best on Windows Server 2003, and, in fact, Windows SharePoint Services 2 (which can enhance Office, Windows and FrontPage-based Web sites, as well as collaboration on Windows systems) requires it, let us get Windows Server 2003 in the Home Office section as well -- don't make us go to the Business or make us buy expesive $3,000 Poweredges. Offer the following versions for preinstallation on all Dell PCs:

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

This post is for the following:
To bring back Office 2003
To make Dell offer Windows Server 2003 as another Windows option.

Actually promote Desktop Linux

Advertising and Marketing, Desktops, Linux submitted by mrvertigo 05/10/07

Dell offered desktop Linux once but seemingly did not market it as much as it could have, the company did not make money on a Linux desktop and decided to stop offering it, this is one reason that dell needs to effectively market its newest offertings
as a desktop alternative!!!

Without a REAL attempt to market this it will die like attempts by so many others, Dell has the resources to market this!

Lets get desktop lnux out there guys! 4 Comments »

can dell become as a new "apple" with linux

Linux submitted by davidene 05/10/07

it will be interesting an accord of dell with novel redhat or ubuntu to develope a linux OS only for dell pc... I like very much idea of dell to implement linux on its devices, but it is a little difficult to use linux for novice users... overall to install new software... it is not easy to find the right software for your specific distribution... it will be a good idea also that dell give this software on its site...or as i told to produce a linux for dell pc that uses an apart installation packet as rpm or exe or... i don't know...it will semplificates the consumers life...

always new and user friendly software is power

IdeaStorm and Balanced Opinion

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/10/07

Don't just listen to the geeks who have time to sit around on IdeaStorm all day every day waiting for you start distributing preinstalled Linux. IdeaStorm is a terribly unbalanced idea really. Get out there and find out what your average customers wants.

There was an excellent suggestion made for surveys: 65714: Undertake a real customer survey

An another to simply survey users of this site: 65482: Who is suggesting? Dell should know. ...a new survey? 6 Comments »

Offer computers running XP, but including an upgrade to Vista that can be done whenever a customer is ready

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by wallyhorse 05/10/07

A way perhaps around the current problems with Vista:

Tiger Direct is now offering computers that come with Vista, but are running XP where customers can upgrade to Vista when they want to. This perhaps is what Dell should also be doing, as those who still want XP now can get a computer with XP, but then can upgrade to Vista whenever they want to do so (with Dell providing the media for both in case someone has to completely reboot their hard drive).

Sounds like a fair compromise to me. 3 Comments »

No Extra Software Option

Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

Check out jeremy_f's update on our current software options.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:

- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!

- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls

- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]

- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program

- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing

- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell

Dell is constantly reviewing options to offer to customers. As this is available for free today, we do not currently plan on offering this as an option to factory install.
