DELL POWER SUPPLY

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by ajmukon 12/21/07

this one is simple:
allow customers to specify what Power Supply they want;
(allow them to choose a 500W - 1000W Power Supplies (PSU)
like they can get a larger PSU for "future upgradability" of a smaller cheaper one for "general use" (of course an error will come up if they choose a PSU that is too small for their system.) 5 Comments »

Shipping Options - Local Pick Up

Sales Strategies submitted by pablohs May 13

I have seen several ideas and comments about how long it takes for items to get shipped, and I agree sometimes 20 days is just too long to wait for a new PC / laptop, specially if the date keeps changing.

I am a big Dell fan, and I try to purchase all my equipment from Dell, however sometimes I just go to the local store for some small stuff.

Here is an idea; now that you have these Dell kiosk at malls, and you are selling Dell PCs in retailers, what about giving customers the option to pick their purchase up at the closest retailer (if available).

For example I may want to buy a Midnight Blue XPS M1330 with 4GB of RAM – In the checkout section of dell.com it may say something like this…

The preliminary ship date for your system is 05/30/08 or you have the following options…

1) You can pick up a Tuxedo Black XPS M1130 with 4GB of RAM at the Dell Kiosk in Mall Z
2) You can pick up a Midnight Blue XPS M1130 with 2GB of RAM at your local Store X on Y Avenue.
3) You can pick up a Midnight Blue XPS M1150 with 4GB of RAM at your local Store A on B Avenue.

Here the customer has a choice to make – what is more important? He/She can wait to get exactly what they want, or they can get something similar right now.

I should be able to pay my purchase at Dell.com and receive a Receipt/Boucher to pick my laptop at the location of my choice.

Warning!!! - This will require you to have good inventory integration with your retailers – You do not want somebody to pick choice X to find out the that the computer described in the website is on back order. That will give DELL a bad PR. 8 Comments »

Power Button On Outside Casing

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bosweto May 11

An external power-on button would be very handy for those of us (and I know there are many) who have their laptop attached to an external monitor for most of the time. Having to open it every time you need to boot up is quite annoying, especially if you keep the laptop on a storage shelf. I understand that a lock button of some sort may need to be implemented along with this, as when transporting the laptop the power button may accidently be pressed and powered on.

Sell AC adapters at retail stores

Advertising and Marketing, Laptop Power submitted by undead999 May 7

Since Dell is selling computers at retail outlets offer ac adapters for laptops at best buy, staples and anywhere you sell laptops. Also offer ac adapters at your kiosks.

AC adapter usually fail without warning, waiting days or weeks for a replacement AC adapter is not always an option for many users. Generic adapters dont always work on Dells, in addition many are underpowered espicially for 17 inch models Comment »

Add USB port 5V supply to Laptop Powersupply units

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by michael.schwarz May 14

Today a travelling laptop user has often additional mobile devices which are charged by the USB port like Music players, mobile phones, PDA's etc. To charge these the Laptop unfortunate must be switched on. If the Transformator/ power supply for Laptops would have an USB power supply connector, - devices could be charged indendent from running the Laptop. (e.g. at nigth in Hotel)

I experienced such capability some time ago by an third party Power supply and found it very valuable.

If this would be added to Dell Laptop power adapters it would offer and added value to the today mobile Users. 1 Comment »

Offer new cheaper SSD's in XPS notebooks

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by redrubberpenguin May 7

Solid state drives have been ridiculously expensive for the last few years. The price is over $15 per GB of storage, as opposed to hard disk drives, which come for even less than $1 per GB of storage at times. But there's no arguing the benefits of SSD's... better performance, quicker boot times, and much better data protection all in exchange for a premium price.

Super Talent has just released a series of solid state drives that are actually AFFORDABLE. The series starts of with a 30GB ssd (120 mb/s read, 40 mb/s write)... FOR 300 DOLLARS. Compare that to Mtron's Mobi 6000 32GB solid state drive, which costs $699. Super Talent's 60GB version runs for $449, while Mtron's 64GB costs over $1000 at the moment.

http://www.supertalent.com/press_view.php?prid=ed3d2c21991e3bef5e069713af9fa6...

Note that the write speeds of these SSD's is lower than some other SSD's out there, but most consumers would agree that they were willing to sacrifice that write speed for the huge amount of money they save. Dell, please offer this SSD on your notebooks, especially on the XPS series, as quickly as you can! And readers, please promote this idea if you want cheap SSD's (and I know you do!). 2 Comments »

Let Home customers know it's OK to buy from the Business section and vice versa.

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by jmxz May 7

From a conversation with Dell's robert_p, under a different Idea it seems that "Home" customers are welcome to buy from Dell's "Small & Medium Business" section, and Dell's "small and/or medium business" customers are welcome to buy from Dell's "Home & Home Office" section.

This is very useful since often computers in the "Small Business" section may be more appropriate for home use (the Latitude's light weight and reliability make it a great college computer); and often computers in the "Home" section may be more appropriate for office use (where the better graphics options in Home are valuable for graphical visualization). It's also useful because an identically-spec'd system may be cheaper the Home Section one week, and then be cheaper in the Small Business section the next.

I think many Dell Business and Home customers are missing out on the best deals and failing to find machines that meet their needs because the home user's are afraid of falsely claiming to be a business and because the business customers are afraid of falsely claiming to by buying systems for personal use.

So a few ideas:

1. Assuming robert_p's right in saying Home Customers are welcome to buy from Small Business - add links to the Home product pages saying "If you don't see what you need here, check out Dell's Small Business section. You're welcome to buy those for Home use too".
2. Assuming robert_p's right in saying Small Business are welcome to buy from the Home section - add links to the Small Business product pages saying "If you don't see what you need here, check out Dell's Home section. You're welcome to buy those for Business Use too".
3. Extrapolating - if it's also OK for Home an Small Biz customers to buy from Dell's "Large Business" and "Government, Education, Healthcare & Life Sciences" section, add those links too.
4. Make a price comparison engine that compares the prices of an identically spec'd system from each of Dell's sections so I don't have to manually dig through all of your painful to navigate website sections to compare Home vs Small Business myself. 2 Comments »

Allow anyone to get any product in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site.

Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice May 4

Sometimes Dell posts some products only in certain channels; for example home offices cannot get Vostros.

It is like saying that business users want Vostros, but nobody in, for example, a home office, would want it. But some home offices might want it. For some people in home offices, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all products actually.

In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who do encounter this.

An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all products in all of your channels.

(I want to note that I posted this in an earlier post, but that was only for PCs. I decided to generalize it to all products). 3 Comments »

Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

Bigger font for ST# number

Servers and Storage submitted by handrianto May 16

Service tag font size located in front of the server is too small to read. this make hard for user to locate the service tag and also to read. the most easier part for user to look at ST# is
located at the back for the server & storage, and
if the user aware of Dell OMSA, read it in Dell OMSA.
It would be nicer if the Service tag printed in a bigger font, so make the user easy to locate th Service tag, especially for the new Dell Servr user. 4 Comments »

Do not scale back build-to-order systems

Desktops and Laptops submitted by masterr Apr 5 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Today in the news I read that Dell "is moving away from its build-to-order model to reduce costs. Dell is limiting the degree to which buyers can dictate specifications while expanding its line of prepackaged models". Please do not do this. The options build-to-order system is what sets Dell above some of the competition. By scaling this back and removing customization choices you remove some of the appeal of buying a Dell machine online. Please do not scale this back.

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Why not set up shop in the Philippines?

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by romeoescuyos 02/28/07

Why not create a havoc here by setting up dealerships and distribution centers here in the Philippines and give your competitors such us Acer, Toshiba and HP a run for their money.

And why not offer flexible choices such as pre-installed LInux/Ubuntu/Linspire/SUSE and open-source software that are stable and yet free (this will save you a lot of tech support calls I guarantee you that much since I worked in a call center before selling your products and services and I somehow have an idea of what customers truly want and they would truly appreciate it if you gave them a chance to be heard. They're not asking much.)

Allow your customers the freedom of defining their computing experience and surely you will reap not only profits but the genuine respect of your customers and that includes me as well.

p.s. I promise if you do decide to move here I will buy my first own PC from you guys and NOBODY ELSE. PERIOD. You guys are still the best!! 3 Comments »

Do not hire nontechnical people for techsupport

Service and Support submitted by jbrogers 02/17/07

This is the main problem with the India call centers - they have no idea what they are doing. They are obviously reading a scripted diagnosing tool and have no personal knowledge of computing issues.

I have both home and business accounts with Dell. When I call in for support on my Business account, I get a good old-fashioned American geek, who instantly understands that I am fairly technical, and doesn't treat me like an idiot.

The Indian call centers, not having knowledge themselves, do not recognize that I know anything, and treat me like an idiot as they read from the diagnosis tool. Yeah, I know the computer is plugged in. Yeah I know that I have internet connectivity. Sheesh.

gives a higher graphic card for 15 inch XPS laptop

Gaming, XPS products submitted by hanlya May 6

it is better if Dell offer a gaming product with high graphic in 15 inch laptop..for example m1530..dell should offer for an additional better video card such as 8800Gt or 8700 GT..and this m1530 will be like kaboom...1 of the best 15 inch laptop ever build..so i suggest dell put additional option for higher graphic or just build a new product 15 inch laptop with gaming characteristic..or maybe m1535..with a better video card.. 2 Comments »

Introduce a "No Component" Option When Customizing

Environment, Service and Support submitted by fahdriyami Apr 23

Intoduce an option to not choose a PC component especially for the XPS Desktop Range, most of Gaming Consumers have already built a PC before and have some of the essential components already, for example, i already have a compatible Intel processor and want my Dell shipped without a processor to save money. a "No Component" limit should also be applied, and not all components should have this option. Talking from a business point of view, this could reduce electronic waste in the long run, however it could also reduce sales of the components which could upset manufacturers...
BUT, the earth is more important. 28 Comments »
