Dell should sponser the Wayne county humane society

Advertising and Marketing submitted by theflykyle 04/14/07

The wayne county humane society has had low grade computers and it is hard for them to be able to do the jobs they need with the low end computers they have. The wayne county humane society is not able to purchace new computers, and upgrade their electronics because the are a non profit orginization and cannot afford to. If dell were to sponser them they would be able to show proof that dells sponsers the wayne county humane society. 1 Comment »

Solid State Drive as option in Notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tablet205 03/28/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Definition

A solid state drive is primarily a data storage device, for use in computing applications that traditionally use a hard disk drive.

A solid state drive is based on non-volatile memory instead of the spinning platter and mechanical-magnetic head found in a conventional hard disk drive. With no moving parts, a solid state drive eliminates seek time, latency and other electro-mechanical delays and failures associated with a conventional hard disk drive.

Advantages

* Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
* Faster read time – In some cases, twice or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
* Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk.
* Faster boot and application launch time - Result of the faster read and especially seek time. But only if application already resides in flash and is more dependent on read speed than other issues, eg. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks & reads.
* Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts results in less power consumption.
* No noise - Lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
* Better mechanical reliability - Lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures, which apply to laptops and other mobile devices, or when transported.
* Security - allowing a very quick "wipe" of all data stored.
* Deterministic performance - unlike mechanical hard drives, performance of SSDs is constant and deterministic across the entire storage. "Seek" time is constant, and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up (See: Fragmentation).
* Lower weight and (depending upon type) size
* Faster than conventional disks on random I/O

HP lets me choose which Vista Sticker (or none!!!) they glue on their laptops. Dell, let us choose none too.

Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 04/16/07

HP gives me the helpful option of letting me choose not to deface my laptop with a Vista sticker.
It also apparently saves me the $1 cost of the sticker.

VISTA label

- Microsoft® Vista Ready Label cannot be configured with Free DOS Operating System.
Please remove this label from your configuration. [3154]
- The Windows Vista™ Basic logo is not compatible with the 2 DIMM memory modules. [3769]

. No Item Selected <flash>[Subtract $1.00]</flash>
. Microsoft® Vista Ready Label [Subtract $1.00]
. Genuine Windows Vista™ Basic Logo
. Genuine Windows Vista™ Logo [Subtract $1.00]

Yes, they also give me the option of not getting Vista at all on that page (saving $75) but I think that's been pointed out in other ideas on ideastorm before.

Dell: Please give us the option not to get a sticker - and, like HP, to make the systems without a Vista Basic Logo cheaper than ones with the ugly sticker.

Laptop screen, that can switch between active and passive

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by steve2 04/17/07

If you are outdoors, with your laptop, the display has to be extremely bright, to compete with the sunlight. A better solution would be a passive display, like the ones on watches and calculators. Instead of competing against sunlight with a lamp, they use it itself for illumination. Downside is, it only has black and white, but that is enough colours to read and write a text.
I do not know, how it is done, but it is possible, to make an LCD switchable between active and passive (has nothing to do with active or passive matrix. I mean with lamp or with outside light). The olpc xo already does it. It would be ideal for taking your work into the garden or elsewhere. 2 Comments »

complete knowledge and complete control

Desktops and Laptops submitted by s 04/17/07

Security is the number one issue.

The personal computer user has purchased their system and demands that the computer manufacturer give them complete knowledge and complete control over every single bit of information processed and stored by their PC. Preventing viruses, trojans, malware, undetectable root kits, eBlaster software , and anything else that unknowingly records and secretly makes available user information to unknown parties, is critical. Additionally, computer manufacturers must provide a one click, one button solution that performs a low-level format of the hard drive and completely restores the operating system and all predetermined user approved applications, automatically installing all available updates, and restoring Internet service provider settings. 2 Comments »

24-hour System Replacement with Amazon S3 Backup

Service and Support submitted by tom2007 04/17/07

Offer the following support option (at least for standardized configurations of high-end Precision notebooks):

1. 24-hour worldwide replacement.
2. No-questions-asked replacement (don't want to deal with *any* techsupport)
3. Pre-paid package for return shipment (if applicable)
4. Ideally, preload internal hd with current backup data from an Amazon S3 service.

The service could be offered as a premium support option, or you could simply charge a one time fee plus the cost of the replacement system, etc.

Consultants who spend extensive time at customer sites would likely be willing to pay the cost of a day's lost revenue just for the service. I would :) Comment »

Mechanical Mouse Moratorium

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by sla161 04/19/07

The mechanical mouse is dead, or at least should be in my opinion. Anyone who has used one curses the mechanical mouse after a few days of use. Yet it costs approx $15 to upgrade from a mechanical mouse to an optical on Dell's website. I can get a basic Logitech optical two button mouse for under five bucks. Get rid of the mechanical mouse and give us an optical by default raising the system price a few dollars, or allow us to select no mouse and actually take a few dollars off each machine. It's not much, but for those of us who purchase huge quantities of systems, it all adds up. 7 Comments »

Suggestion: display comments in latest-first order

IdeaStorm submitted by phubert 02/23/07

A number of 'threads' are getting a bit long. It takes awhile to scroll down to the latest comments.

Latest-first (at least as an _option_) would eliminate this problem.

**

Also: PAGINATE thread displays so only the first page is loaded when the user selects the topic! 50 Comments »

Support Engineers that speak English

Service and Support submitted by scottgreer 04/19/07

Why is it so hard for Dell to hire call center employees that speak fluent, clear English? It, on average, doubles the length of a call (and my frustration) getting assistance on any issue. I can't imagine that it would cost so much to move those call centers back for all customers. Comment »

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Why cant Dell price consistently?

Sales Strategies submitted by larrykalpakoff 04/19/07

I work at a government agency which dictates price based on low cost. I cant buy it if it isnt the lowest price on your website. So I go onto the small business site and I get a price of lets say $500 for a 24 inch monitor. Then I go the CMAS contract price for the STate of California and it quotes me $700. I cant pay this price because of my local governments board of directors policy. Thats that.

But if I buy from the small business site my order gets cancelled because of my address, its flagged as government.

So we buy HP. For everything and I dont like that. But as long as Dell doesnt care about saving government agencies money all my servers and workstations will be HP because I'm forced by a policy.

And no Dell I dont want to call your nasty phone tree and go thru price matching. Which works sometimes. I dont want to waste my time on a call. 11 Comments »

Digital Media Player that supports xD Media Cards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by shinra 04/19/07

Given that many Digital Media Players today support media cards like the SD Format, or the Sony MemoryStick format, or USB Sticks, etc., I'd like to see support in the future for a media player that, while having a built in allocated memory of say, 1-2GB, you could expand that memory with an insertable media card, which holds so much more data.

I pick xD because its what I use in my digital camera, and I'd like the idea that I could take those photos that I have taken in my camera and upload them into my Media Player to use as an immediate wallpaper, show friends, or just to dump them and to free up room on my Camera. The xD format is widely supported in some areas, but not in other, and thus my Idea.

The side of the media cards is fairly small and so it would not take much room to add in the components to other functions and features of a media player. Comment »

Laptop raid array

Servers and Storage, Laptops submitted by mlipman 04/19/07

Since the hard drive is the limiting speed factor in most laptops, why not have a small raid array in the laptop. This could be done with a collection of low capacity drives, so wouldn't be expensive. 3 Comments »

Thin and Light Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by yaletownkid 04/19/07

I used to be all about performance and display with my choice of laptop. But I went "thin and light" about 3 years ago, and I will never go back!

I know the majority of buyers prefer the 15" (or bigger) screens, and big wrist-wrest keypads, but have you ever tried to use one on a plane? Send the Product Manager on a few cross-country, economy class flights and they'll see what I mean. I have an office, home office, and i"m mobile daily. Honestly try carrying around 8lbs and 15" form factor - its like carrying dumbbells.

Please look into:
1. Form factors of 12" screens, Less than 3lbs
2. try magnetitic power connection
3. solid state memory possibilities
4. Dire need of a style/design update. My 640m has all the sex appeal of a dial tone.
5. I would pay a premium to NOT have all that bloatware pre-installed.
6. the optical drive - can we make this totally optional?

Thanks for letting me participate. 1 Comment »
