car headunit radio/mp3 player with builtin hard drive

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by fernando 06/28/07

A car headunit with radio (AM/FM)/mp3 player with a hard drive built-in. This way you can have your entire MP3 collection on your car. There will be no need of any cabling, expensive adapters, etc to hook up your portable MP3 players.

There are very few companies doing this out there and they are missing a nice UI and software tools to enhance the head-unit ease of use. 4 Comments »

English Speaking Support in the Caribbean

Service and Support submitted by creativepragmatic 06/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

I am based on an island in the English speaking Caribbean. Every time I order from Dell, I use the website because I fear not understanding or being misunderstood by the Spanish speaking reps assigned to my country. While I appreciate the Spanish speaking reps' efforts, communicating with them is frustrating for me and when I make a large order on behalf of a client, it is important that each order be 100% correct. Mistakes are costly for me, my clients and Dell. Dell should either set up a small sale/service center staffed by native English speakers to service customers in the English speaking Caribbean or route our calls to a North American center staffed by native English speakers. I live in a country where I know Dell sells a lot of computers, will likely sell more in the future as the country develops, and where people love famous brands. Providing native English support to native English customers should not be that difficult.

FlightGear open source flight simulator pre-install option

Gaming, Software submitted by arclight 02/24/07

It is a free open source flight simulator that could be offered on systems. Dell could charge to have it pre-installed with scenery (or for a certain amount of software support). Im not suggesting just installing it on everything, but offering it as an option along with the other software that can be selected when configuring a system.

Sell US PCs everywhere

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by davewizard 06/28/07

We all know that Dell sells excellent machines but... some hardware and OS (linux) options are only valid in the US!, here in the non US world we would really love to have the same buying options and benefits

PS.. I've noticed that in other countries, customizing PCs and notebooks is lots more expensive than the same customatization in the US 1 Comment »

Design a new XPS laptop in a 13" form factor

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, XPS products submitted by jorge 06/05/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Dell design and implement a new 13" XPS Laptop!

Include the following:
1. Option of color on the outside of the screen, like silver, red and black!
2. Make it thinner than your current XPS offerings.
3. Introduce a round shaped hinge that opens at the back of the case.
4. Include the fingerprint reader.
5. With the new Duo Core processor at a fast 2.4 GHz and with the Santa Rosa chipset!
6. Make sure it can handle 4 gig of RAM.
7. Incorporate the new solid state hard drive, I think its called SSD drive? Or a large spinning drive like 250 gigs.
8. Slot-loading dual-layer DVD±RW drive!
9. Optional NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS / 128MB
10. WWAN option for Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T
11. Ethernet, 802.11a, a/g, or n options, Bluetooth option
12. Integrated 2 megapixel webcam (VGA only on LED-backlit display)
13. HDMI, VGA, 1394, (2) USB 2.0, integrated media reader (MS, SD, xD), dual mini-PCI slots
14. Approx. Dimensions with LED 12.5 x 9.4 x 0.87 - 1.33-inches (318 x 238 x 22.1 - 33.8mm) / with CCFL 12.5 x 9.4 x 0.97 - 1.43-inches (318 x 238 x 24.6 - 36.3mm)
15 Keep the weight around 4 pounds
16. Include headphones and a remote that slides into the computer case so we can hide it and take it along without much fuss.
17. LED lit back screen.
18. Make it so it releases next week if not the end of this week!

This will sell like hot cakes! I can provide a few sketches of what it should look like if my description was not clear.

PS: Can you offer a Ubuntu version as well? If not how about a FreeDOS version? Come on you sell those already whats it cost to throw in a Ubuntu CD? I can install it if you don't want to. I understand by the way.

Check out the XPS M1330, which also has the option for Ubuntu!

Amiga OS4 on Customised Dell Computers

Operating Systems submitted by badblood 06/06/07

The AmigaOS has been characterized as “the best operating system ever developed”.

The "Amiga Operating System" originally targeted the desktop computing market. It was built around tightly integrated hardware and software. The hardware was originally based on proprietary chips running the Motorola 68000 series of processors. The AmigaOS was designed from its inception as a true multi-threaded, multi-tasking, multi-media operating system. This combination of hardware and software produced a very fast, powerful and easy to use computing platform. Over 6 million Amiga computers were sold.

The Amiga platform was readily adopted by the television, motion picture and video game development communities.

This system was the enabler for the birth of Newtek's Video Toaster -- the first real-time video editing system. AmigaOS was also the first commercially available operating system to implement pre-emptive multitasking.

Over the years the computing industry moved from proprietary hardware to pluggable components. Stability and security became critical concerns for all operating systems. Support for 3D and easy access to and through the Internet drove development. Amiga responded to these market changes by releasing OS 4.

Make more profit

Dell submitted by mistern 06/06/07

Dell should make more profit in order to become more valuable. Shares must rise!

I don't only mean more profit, no! I mean more profit than anybody else thinks Dell can do.

So, don't plant trees and stuff if the customer doesn't pay for it. 15 Comments »

SAVE PAPER - Include Whole Project Gutenberg 20,000 free books on all new Dells

Environment, Education submitted by reg 06/06/07 **NOT NOW**

PROJECT GUTENBERG: 20,000 BOOKS *TOTALLY* FREE - AS TEXT FILES

By including Project Gutenberg's whole collection of ASCII books on every new Dell,Millions of kilograms of paper will NOT be used to actually print those books -
you can just read it on the screen, or have the computer's voice read the book to you.

For added educational benefit, include the past 5 years of Project Censored topics too:

Project Censored.

Project Censored covers the news that no one else has been willing - or allowed - to talk about.

All the books could be placed in a single Directory - full of alphabetically sorted by author directories. If you want to read - just click down to the author of your choice and open one of their book files. If you want your hard drive space back, click the top directory: BOOKS - and delete it. All space returned.

Protect the Environment, and save some trees while learning !

Another benefit of books without the paper, in a Dell laptop:
It is easier to carry 20,000 book files in your backpack,
than actually carrying 20,000 books on your back! OUCH!

Thank you.

the DELL shop ..

Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by emacsuser 06/06/07

Do a deal with the high street electronic shops to sell Dell/Ubuntu direct to the public. They can deal direct with the customers and returned goods and you get to sell more units. A high end multimedia unit would fly off the shelves. People don't care what's under the hood as long as it works.

Some kind of franchise deal. You can then dispense with your call centers in India which are next to useless. Also stop being a one product company, start selling those portable Linux units like Hitachi and the rest are doing. Blackberry type things etc.

If you really wanted to make money out of Linux, then buy your own distro, while there stil any left that haven't signed the covenant with his billness.

Dell Ambassadors

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood 06/05/07

There is a tendency to communicate tech products to the main purchasing audience - people between 20-40, people who are often more technically knowledgeable. This is because the people who sell or market these products are often from these groups But people outside these groups have a stake in Dell products and services and they should be communicated with too.

To communicate with these people Dell needs ambassadors, respected and popular characters of appeal to a particular age group, to a class or gender. They should communicate to that group why Dell products are for them.

The same applies for people of different nationalities.

Dell embrace diversity! 8 Comments »

Support Telecommuting work from home 2 days a week - and make a Telecommuting IT system 'turnkey' product to sell to others

Dell, Environment submitted by reg 06/06/07

Support Telecommuting and Work from home 2 days a week. That's like a $100+ a month bonus right there, saving money on gas, parking, and tolls.

Get those cars off the road! Especially during 'Rush Hour' (when traffic is slowest and the fuel wasted is at a maximum - you can see the pollution in the air and taste its poison every morning).

If you have a few thousand employees working from home two days a week,
you'll take those cars off the road, save the employees rush hour time wasted in traffic, and have yet another PR project to tout:

Dell TeleOffice System

'The New Dell' - Thinking Green by keeping the Air Clean.

If your employees work at a desk, answering the phone, typing on a computer: why get into a metal box, burn hydrocarbons, ride an elevator, and sit under expensive lights, to do what could be done by logging into the network from home,
and routing all network traffic and phone calls over VoIP to the employee's house?

A bet a lot of Dell employees would be willing to try the Work From Home 2 Days a Week program.

DELL - Be Green, and save green ($) too!

After you've perfected a DELL work at home system, bundle it as a package setup and sell it to thousands of corporate customers.

1. Citrix Servers
2. VoIP setup
3. Client - At Home - PCs.

The new Dell WorkFromHome System would allow tens of thousands of other employees to work from home a couple days a week, just log into the network and receive calls, email, and files directly at home through a secure, encrypted internet and Citrix session. Dell - THINK GREEN!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 5 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.
