Better selection of Linux notebooks

Linux submitted by kasoroth 08/07/07

An Ubuntu notebook with higher specs would be nice. At a minimum, I'd want a decent monitor option (1920x1200 resolution), a decent NVIDIA video card option, and gigabit ethernet. I'd also prefer an AMD processor, and a price point about $50 less than an equivalent Windows system. 5 Comments »

Say No to Microsoft SuSe Linux

Linux, Small Business submitted by dbyte32 08/08/07

Dell is offering Microsoft's SuSe Linux pre-installed in China, and plans to do the same in the US. MicroSoft shouldn't be allowed to profit from Linux. One of the founding ideas of Linux is freedom from Microsoft and this inferior software. 20 Comments »

Add 802.11n wireless option for your Linux offerings.

Linux submitted by jmxz 08/15/07

I can't find any of your Linux offerings with a 802.11n offering. Seems most 802.11n chipsets have pretty weak driver support right now; but fundamentally 802.11n does work with Linux (heck, Cisco 802.11n devices are even linux based). Adding 802.11n as an option along - even in a partially working state with a disclaimer that drivers are not stable - would help some linux customers including (a) those people who don't mind helping debugging the driver, and (b) those people willing to use wired networking until the drivers get more mature.

Also, of course Dell could tell the vendors to provide a working driver as Michael Dell himself suggested
http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB20000815S0014

"One of the big challenges has been the driver world," Dell said. "Chipset companies and peripheral companies need to develop for Linux. Dell can be a powerful ally. We can say, 'if you want to work for Dell give us drivers with support for Linux.'

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..
  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Business class Linux notebooks with large screens.

Linux, Monitors and Displays, Small Business submitted by nategoose 09/19/07

I check the dell.com/open everyday looking for the day when you have a higher end Linux notebook. Bigger screen and possibly 2 hard drive bays. Maybe a docking station, but not necessary. 1 Comment »

Ubuntu PCs need more video card options

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nkmhutirv 06/13/07

Dell desktops and notebooks preloaded with Ubuntu should have more video cards to choose from!

I do not know how Nvidia 7300LE compares to other video cards, but I do not belive TurboCache is suitable even for the most casual gaming.TurboCache's memory sharing technology is just not suitable. Yes, I do play 3d accelerated games from time to time on Ubuntu! You could offer some Nvidia 7600, 7800 or some other medium range video card. Nothing fancy, just something to allow some 3d effects.

Even Dell PCs preloaded with FreeDos have 2 video cards to choose from:

128MB ATI Radeon X1300 [Included in Price]

256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro [add $50 or $2/month1]

With Ubuntu PCs you have to choose between a range of just one video card:

correction: you have 2 options:

IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 [Included in Price]

256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache [add $50 or $2/month1]

But what's the difference between them? I want to play games 1-2 years old. I do not belive this will be posible with this kind of cards.

You could say Dell does not address gamers, but Dell's Windows based PCs have a lot more advanced video cards: "Stunning 3D graphics performance with the latest single and dual graphics cards in the market available". Unfortunately such advanced graphics is available only to Vista users, not even XP buyers!

Have you seen the noise (fuzz, amazement) 3d effects in Ubuntu have generated? You see, Ubuntu users appreciate 3d acceleration in Linux. Don't restrict them to just integrated graphics and TurboCache! 5 Comments »

High-end Linux laptop

Linux, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by teron 07/10/07

Currently, the Inspiron 1505N can be customized to be rather high-end, but it lacks one crucial component: A really high-end graphics card.

This is a request to provide a Linux laptop that can be fitted with a huge hard disk, lots of RAM and a high-end Nvidia graphics card, preferably in a 15" design with lots of USB ports. 8 Comments »

Linux Printing Solutions

Linux, Printers and Ink, Service and Support submitted by jfelisky 02/21/07

I have a Dell 3100cn laser printer, which was a nice purchase until I dropped Windows XP and moved to OpenSuSE on my home computer.

I've tried a lot of different message boards looking for a way to keep that printer, but I'm so frustrated with Dell's lack of Linux support that I have to consider HP, since the LaserJet family is more broadly supported. 53 Comments »

Improve linux notebook line

Linux, Laptops submitted by della 07/19/07

Hi. I actually use a macbook with Ubuntu Fesisty Fawn on it.
I would be *very* pleased to switch to Dell cause:
1. I will not pay for a OS, MacOSX, that I do not use.
2. A Dell with Ubuntu preinstalled works out of the box while the macbook has to be configured and not everything is possible.
3. I would be happy to support a company that has been the first to make a choice that I consider important.

But something retains me to do so:
1. linux dell notebook are not sell outside US
2. dell notebook are ugly to see. Come on guys, a macbook is very beautiful. Is not a matter of "cool" vs "serious", is about "beautiful" and "ugly". We spend a lot of money in technology, we spend the most of our days in front of a notebook, we want that it is powerful and beautiful and comfortable and so on.
3. linux dell notebook linup have poor choice, I need at least a model with a serious graphic card (nvidia or ati) with it's own memory, a integrated camera and such things. I am sure you are already working on this, just my +1 here.

This is my thoughts.
I hope I could buy a dell notebook in Europe soon :) 5 Comments »

AMD for LINUX PCS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by seniormartinez 07/28/07

I think Dell should use AMD processors instead of INTEL, or at least give you the option to customize, first of all i think it would make the computer performance increase and also it would be more affordable especially if you make a back-to-school package.

Thanks, and cheers! 1 Comment »

Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon 07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.

My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.

Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

Linux Laptops with the Cost-Effective AMD Processors

Linux, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by lamar_air 06/18/07

Linux supporters are often attracted to linux OS distros for a number of reasons but some of the more popular are its open source licensing agreement, stability, and cost. There is also often a focus on supporting a company who is not a market dominator and growing support towards the rivalries. For the hardware side of your linux laptop the AMD processor can often offer the same performances as the Dell dominating Intel but at a lower cost.

An Ubuntu-AMD laptop could be a popular request.

GNU/Linux + AMD64 + NVIDIA/ATI Graphic

Desktops, Gaming, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by ebrahim 07/06/07

I've seen ideas about "GNU/Linux + AMD" and "GNU/Linux gaming system", but I think this combination would be great:

GNU/Linux + AMD64 + NVIDIA/ATI Graphic

especially on DELL laptops. For example imagine this notebook:

OS: Ubuntu 7.04 GNU/Linux
CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60
Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce 8800M
RAM: 2 x 2GB

or this one as a cheaper choice:

OS: Ubuntu 7.04 GNU/Linux
CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52
Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600
RAM: 2 x 1GB 3 Comments »

All operating systems on all platforms!

Operating Systems submitted by markvs624 07/09/07

Do just what the title says: offer all operating systems on all platforms with full support. Don't restrict Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Unbuntu to certain models.

Make the base price for all base operating systems the same: XP Home = Vista Home Basic = Unbuntu. No discounts at the entry level. No $50 cheaper for Unbuntu. No $50 more for Vista.

Give no incentive either way The same customers who buy XP Pro and Vista Ultimate now will still buy those versions in the future. LET THE CUSTOMER DECIDE. 48 Comments »

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments »

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page

Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07

These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one)
only list some of the operating systems Dell sells.

I assume you also recommend Ubuntu for some home users (those who want better security and performance, I imagine) and FreeDOS for business (since that's what you sell on your Latitudes - even though I can't imagine why you prefer FreeDOS there over Ubuntu). But unless you put them in those pages, we can't easily make an informed choice. 15 Comments »
