Dell Spirit!

Sales Strategies submitted by captainsensible 02/28/07

In the old days Dell used to give out a birth certificate with every Dell system, like having a geek cabbage patch doll or something. Dell should include something like this, along with a tshirt, coffee cup, bumper sticker, keychain, and anything else that users could show off their new system with! We need spirit! 10 Comments »

Top Ten/Demoting Stories/Clear the Clutter

IdeaStorm submitted by captainsensible 03/26/07

After about 8 hours of demoting linux repeats, suggesting changes to Windows (where's Microsoft's IdeaStorm), all kinds of 3rd party hardware Dell should sell, people posting their personal information, and blank posts galore, there should really be a Top Ten for the day/week/month/year.

Heey, throw in Top Demoted Posters too, for fun!

Don’t waste my time – I’m certified and a DCSE tech.

Service and Support submitted by mizsteel66 02/26/07

Here is a suggestion for us small business owner techs that don’t purchase “gold or platinum” level support for our in-house desktops. We have or are qualified in-house technical support. We have or hold numerous industry certifications, including Associate DSCE certification status. However our company isn’t big enough to qualify for the warranty parts direct program.

Stop making me deal with a level one or newbie tech, someone who clearly is reading off a screen following step by step and doesn’t really have a good working knowledge of computers. When im helping YOUR tech support, there is clearly an issue here. (US or India based)

If I have already ran through the whole gauntlet of “recommended steps” and can give them the information and errors from dell diagnostics or the DSET reports, please don’t waste my time asking me to do them again or to so stupid steps or asking me stupid questions. “is the computer plugged in?”

You already have a list of DCSE techs, use it and grant them some type of higher access. On our business accounts when we call in, verify who we are and flag our accounts so we can get what we need and move onto our next project. 12 Comments »

Replace the Start Button graphic with Dell logo.

Advertising and Marketing submitted by arclight 02/26/07

Replace the Start Button graphic with Dell Logo. Rather then have the Windows logo in the start button, replace it with the blue Dell logo on Dell systems.

It could be enabled by default or as selectable option- either way it could help make Dell systems feel special to customers and boost brand recognition. 5 Comments »

CDs included.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by brandner 02/26/07

I like to format my PC and give it a clean install once every year or so. It just makes everything run faster and keeps the system stable. When I bought my Dell Inspiron, it came with a picture of a CD and a note, saying something to the effect of "please contact Dell if you need original software".

I think that a Windows CD should be included with every Dell computer (that has Windows pre-loaded). At the very least, an ISO should be on the hard drive so that the customer can create their own install CD. Comment »

vanilla kernel ".config" file for major point releases...

Linux, Service and Support submitted by inspiron_6000_ubuntu 02/26/07

If the following quotes are accurate...

"There is no single customer preference for a distribution of Linux"

"We don't want to pick one distribution and alienate users with a preference for another."

An unsupported .config file for the major point releases from kernel.org for particular hardware would eliminate the above conflicts.

If a complete .config file for a kernel is to complex and subjective, a file of specific kernel drivers and modules that match up with X hardware would be helpful. My guess is that the hardware engineers at Dell would only need a couple of days to come up with such a list. Comment »

Consultants Corp

Service and Support submitted by rbaideme 02/26/07

Maintain a database of consultants by location that Dell could refer customers to when they need some hands on support with a user problem.

1. The consultants would be independent and Dell would have disclaimers concerning independent consultants.

2. There would be a rating and survey similar to Ebay seller evaluations that would rate each consultant and how many support calls they took and how sucessfull they were.

3. Top consultants could earn Dell equipment and/or services each year.

4. Database would be geocoded so consultants could be listed by highest rating scores by 50 mile radius (ex).

5. Consultants results would be entered into a knowledge base for use by users and orther consultants.

6. Hire me to run your customer service program. 3 Comments »

my own look+feel

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by arohrmann 02/26/07

Isn't it easy to give users there own designed notebook cover or PC box?
No!

Look at Postbank in germany. There you can create your own Visa Card design.
Look at other notebook seller. They have many designs to make cool notebooks. Look at this page: http://www.cyber-system.de/

Isn't it cool :-) 1 Comment »

No-MS Windows Option

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by arohrmann 02/26/07

Please give buyer the option to save money and deliver a software license free product.
If DELL hardware is Linux compatible, users can install their own operation system...

At the moment it's not so easy to use DELL notebooks and PC with regular Linux distributions like Debian or Ubuntu, Red Hat ... Comment »

More and bigger link jumps between IdeaStorm pages

IdeaStorm submitted by arclight 02/26/07

To aid moving through lists, more and bigger sized IdeaStorm jump links (the ones at the bottom of a page). For example for a page '5', rather then-

« Previous 1 ... 3 4 5 6 7 ... 143 Next »

have more links like-

« Previous 1 ... 3 4 5 6 7 ... 10 20 30 ... 100 .. 143 Next »

or

Next 10 » Next 50 » Next 100

Intelligent port placement

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by ubondell 02/26/07

Please place the ports of your laptops where they make sense, and not where they are a nuisance. For example, on my Inspiron 8100 the ethernet port is on the lower right corner of the case which is exacly where a right-handed user wants to have his/her mouse. You are not alone. I have an IBM (now Lenovo) laptop at work that has the PC card interface on the lower left corner. Try plugging an 802.11 wireless card into it and not have your hand act as an RF absorber so that access point connectivity is poor. Do you guys ever use a system before you commit it to market? Embedded OS

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by sangelnet 02/26/07

The great thing would be to have and embedded OS(in the laptop or desktop), that by passes all the booting delay.

We should be able to boot and in no time be in our desktops or login screen. The same way we boot and see right away the bios, we should see the OS. Just a thought! Comment »

Bluetooth devices for all systems

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by xcasto 02/26/07

I've been seeing a lot of people talking USB connections, these are nice but often increase the foot print of a computer.

If there was a standard option of Bluetooth for all devices this would make life easier with those of us who need a wireless mouse/keyboard setup and wanting to communicate with our cell phones (transfer images/ringtones) or even taking things a step further by making our laptops into a cell phone with an optional phone card (like those offered through Sprint, Verizon, or other cellular services) and a Bluetooth ear piece.

Offer a GPS mapping system as well for laptops and it would be a great traveling machine (if it had all the other required options, see other posts). Comment »

Product ideas

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by jknott67 02/26/07

Expand your personal / consumer electronics market. You already have TVs, etc. How about:

* Home Theater systems (that integrate easily w/ Dell PCs)
* DVRs
* Intelligent devices for the home that integrate with the "intelligent home" (video cameras, temperature control, etc.)

Car audio/video systems (that easily interface w/ existing laptop/PDA/MP3 devices)

Also - a decent Dell branded NAS (network attached storage) w/ RJ45, wireless (?) & USB capability. Optional expandibility w/ multiple drives, RAID capable, etc.

Just my 2 cents.... Thanks! Comment »
