Please update your N-series pages to be less Windows centric.

submitted by jmxz 05/03/07

On your "open source notebooks" page linked below [1] you state

It is not a Microsoft operating system and is not qualified for Windows licensing use under any existing Microsoft Volume Licensing Program (OPEN, Enterprise, etc.)
It seems silly to be focusing on Windows there - but if you really feel you need a paragraph about Windows there how about adding similar information about other OS's you sell. Perhaps something parallel to your Windows verbage like:
It is not a Canonical operating system either, but it is qualified for running Canonical's OS's like Ubuntu.
It's not a Red Hat operating system either, but you can run that OS on these systems too.
But better - just remove the Windows-centric focus of those pages; and focus on what the title of the page says it's about "Open Source Notebooks".

While you're at it - offer some other Open Source OS's on them - after all, Ubuntu supports that hardware better than FreeDOS anyway - so there's little reason for you to keep making FreeDOS the only option. Yes, I know you said you'll have some Ubuntu laptops at some indefinite future date; but so far haven't seen the Latitudes on the list that you're currently selling with FreeDOS.

Professional Apps and Popular Games..for Linux??

Gaming, Linux, Software submitted by kdubber 05/01/07

Until a Linux distro will support such popular apps as PhotoShop or AutoCAD and others that are necessary for some of us to make a living Linux is stuck in the also ran category.. this is unfortunate.
Dell could lead the way by working with AutoDesk, Adobe and others to provide this application availability in Linux. NO these apps would not be free.. but if the price to buy a Linux version was in line with the Windows version? Not immensely higher like some Mac application of WinSoftware.. then a REAL alternative is showing up on the scene..
If this same distro was to support most games that are hugely popular.. WHOLESALE migration would start to take place.. IMHO anyway.. what do you think?
I think a DellLinux distro makes sense.. or some other named distro supported by a consortium of non-Windows hardware and software suppliers.. do they all like being tied to Windows for their success?

Why shall we pay extra dollars for Windows Vista when we have a free operating system?

Please install Linux by default! 7 Comments »

Dont force people to choose Windows Vista

Operating Systems submitted by gaborlake 03/13/07

When buying a new Dell computer, Windows Vista is the only OS of choice. So far, with all I have seen about Vista, I would rather want to stick with XP, since Microsoft announced that it would support XP even longer than Vista. There is no real reason for having a computer with Vista installed at the moment. So it would be a good thing to still have the option to have Windows XP installed instead. 9 Comments »

Dockingstation for Inspirons

submitted by amdohmen 05/03/07

Hi,
I´m missing a good dockingstation for Inspiron Notebooks.

What I expect when I return home is to connect the Notebook to a Dockingstation whithout having to connect anything else. If you use Portreplicators like those for any Notebook, you further have to connect Powersupply and so on.
That also means that you have a lot of cables on your desk. I also can´t beleave that the performance over a USB- Port is as fast as over a special connector. 1 Comment »

Pre-Installed Linux on Desktops and Laptops and offer AMD

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nukem 02/20/07

Dell I hope you're beginning to see the picture of why HP is kicking your [profanity removed by moderator]. You need to ask your customers what they want, don't assume.. It sounds like they want an alternative to Windows! Dahhh..

If you want to be number one offer the three top Linux Version pre-installed on you systems. You just might move back to the top.. Oh and while you're about it install AMD and do yourself a favor.. They may no longer be the top dog, but some of us want an alternative to Intel..

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

Include IMAGED HARD DRIVE on Disc with purchase

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by tripmeist 04/29/07

When a customer buys a system from Dell, you should include an EXACT IMAGE of the Hard Drive "as shipped from the factory." This would include all drivers, preinstalled software, etc. Put it in a BRIGHT ORANGE CARDBOARD SLEEVE WITH A WARNING TO KEEP WITH OR NEAR SYSTEM. Make the disc BOOTABLE, obviously.

Talk about CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE ... No more OS Reinstall, followed by Drivers and Utilities, etc. Take a 90-120 minute process and allow the customer to do a reinstall in just 10-15 minutes. Obviously, put a warning on the disc sleeve that it will only work as long as the hardware configuration has not changed. Make it work with any new Hard Drive, as Dell often has to send replacement hard drives that are different.

PUT AN IMAGE OF THE SYSTEM AS SHIPPED ONTO A DISC. INCLUDE THIS WITH EVERY SYSTEM. 1 Comment »

Open Drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by d0t-bat 05/02/07

Allowing the ability to download drivers from companies other than Dell (ie. Perc RAID controllers and being able to use drivers from LSI). Also providing up-to date drivers for old hardware that is "locked" such as laptops with outdated video drivers which cant be upgraded easily due to software restrictions. 1 Comment »

Ubuntu LAPTOP

Linux, Laptops submitted by coldstatue 05/02/07

Linux fans are thrilled about the new image at
http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/IMAGE_Dell_Makes_Ubuntu_Official/
(you took down the original, probably due to the Digg Effect, so our feelings are obvious.)

The problem here is that geeks often build their own desktops, and it would be a shame for this venture to return lackluster sales, causing Dell to regret the decision.

PLEASE offer Ubuntu laptops with wireless support. If video cards and drivers were installed that would allow Beryl/Compiz functionality, I can pretty much guarantee that I would buy one. So would many others.

ONE SHOPPING CART PLEASE (dell.com)

Dell Web Site submitted by ootleman 02/16/07

Why split it up into 4 different shopping carts (home, small business, etc)? I still don't know how it works. 1/2 my products go into one cart, 1/2 my orders go into the other, possibly depending on where I was browsing from.

And, then, seems like the shopping carts expire after a few hours. After all that time spent configuring, why not keep it around longer.

Matter of fact, why not split the site up at all? If I click on desktops - show me all desktops. Do I, as a small company, need differ computers then a medium business? Please show me everything and let me figure out what works best.

DON'T KILL THE AXIM PDA's platform

Broadband and Mobility submitted by optical10 02/23/07

The world leading x51v WM5 device is only now being bettered by HTC's future "Advantage” PDA / Smartphone matching the Axim 624 MHz power etc 2 years after the party started by Dell's forward thinking product!

Yes it may need to have GPS, EDGE, 3G etc to survive as a Smartphone in this mobile obsessed times but it can be done & the current Axim users will appreciate your efforts into the WM6 platform by buying your products if you reward their loyalty.

Obviously this may be previous if you’re not killing the Axim but most forums think you are so hence this post.

Ron Garriques ex - Motorola were counting on you.

Cheers

ps. For those who require other combi options like say PDA only I request the modarator to open a poll on this topic.

1. PDA only
2. Smartphone
3. PDA + GPS inc
4. Smartphone + GPS

I'm presuming it's a given on the two slots [CF/SD] staying in any of it's incarnations above as we have grown attached to their functionality as is also the case with BT & WiFi. Does much have to change for the Axim x51v to change to bring in inline with the soon to be released crop of WM6 units, I think not if the HTC WM6 units are any thing to go by. Heck the iPhone would also have some way to go to beat my current Axim x51v + Audiovox RTM 8000p voice & data CF card for phone usage. Plus don't get me started on all the add-on projects we at sites like aximsite.com have shared like afarre's X51V & Aximizer as Carputer: http://afarreAximCarputer.notlong.com & the Ratoc.com USB host controller CF card that allows me to use a 169 GB Seagate 2.5" HD portable battery caddy for ALL my media needs at home & on the go & soon a Logitech webcam! 28 Comments »

No extra software

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by richhannon 04/23/07

Please stop putting all the junk software on new Dell systems, it takes me many hours and a lot of work to take it off before I send the Dell to my client. I only order Dell systems, desktops and laptops, for clients and I make no money doing so and the extra time to get rid of the garbage useless LITE versions of all the software comes out of my pocket. Most of it doesn't work anyway.

Also, PLEASE continue to allow us to order ANY Dell system with Windows XP Professional on it. I will not be using Vista any time soon and for sure until Microsoft gets it right. I did the same when XP came out, used NT for several years for my Windows system. I have to support clients long distance and we can not handle all the problems with new Windows versions. None of my clients have an in-house IT department I am it and that is how I make my living.

Thanks for great products and support over the many years I have dealt with Dell. No telling how many systems I have "sold"/recommended to clients for you, I have been doing this since 1986.

Thanks again.

One World, One Dell

Service and Support submitted by mistern 05/04/07

We live in a global world. And so should Dell.

I don't think, say, Americans and Europeans differ so vastly in hardware taste.

So why has every country its own product palette?

Please! Let me buy the greatest Dell products from everywhere. Anytime.

Thank you. 5 Comments »

OS Reinstall CD's

Service and Support submitted by xhotardx 02/24/07

How about auctually including real install cd's for the original OS. So when you have to reimage I dont have to spend 2 hours uninstalling stuff that I dont want. Why can these not be provided for free? If a consumer is paying for a license there is no reason that you cant front the 4 cents and give them a copy of that software (even microsoft is cool with that). 10 Comments »

Better cooling... more efficient design ...more maintenance friendly

Precision Workstations submitted by phubert 05/04/07

Recently noticing the HUGE heatsink on the CPU of a Dell Precision Workstation 370, I wonder if some passive water-cooled or even, say, closed system alcohol cooled device could provide lower CPU temps at a lower cost in actual resources... and hopefully a smaller -space-.

How much research has gone into the design of cases for:
-ease of maintenance
-cooling
-overall use of resources (more environmentally friendly)
-prevention of or easy maintenance for dust-clogging 5 Comments »

Recovery Hard Drive partitions are not needed, other solutions are better

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by carganegativa18 04/22/07

When I ordered my laptop, I selected the 120 HD, thinking it would be enough for my school work and photography. To my surprice when the laptop arrived, I only had 85 gigs available. I then took a look at "my computer" and wala, there it was

1. A ten gig partition for Recovery purpuses:
Althoug there are times when one really needs to have a computer back to its factory setting, I think its unfar that the user has to give up 10 GB of disk storage.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
1. Give the consumer a DVD of the recovery ISO,
2. Give the consumer the option, either have it installed or have a DVD for it, I rather pay for DVD, than pay for a larger HD.

2. There are tons of pre-installed software that takes up huge amounts of disk space. Some of that stuff we don't need it, and sometimes we dn't know how to get that software out of our systems.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
1. Ship installations CD's to consumers, and let the consumer deside which software they want to install. Hence allowing consumer enjoy more HD space.

2. Advice the consumer when they are buying the laptop/pc of how much "possible" available HD is going to be available upon arrival of laptop. Had I known I was only going to have 85 gigs left, I would have gotten a bigger HD.

I hope this gets promoted, and I hope that many people feel the same way, that we want what is adverticed (120 gigs, not 85 when the laptop arrives) 21 Comments »

Enable Advanced Configuration Options in BIOS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by ski4404 05/01/07

It's great that Dell is using the latest chipsets from Intel, but really what use is it if we cannot take advantage of the new features offered? Many if not all of the advanced BIOS configuration features that are present in Intel boards not supplied by Dell are missing in the Dell bios. Simple items like SATA mode switching are strangely absent (at least in the desktops -- don't know about servers). I might understand if Dell doesn't want people to overclock for support reasons, but there are many other options that should be available in the bios. 3 Comments »
