Improve the web configuration - recommend based on what parts I desire

Dell, Dell Web Site submitted by clohman Mar 11

The Dell Web Site is frustrating. I have a few very specific components in mind that I want in a computer, but the web site makes it difficult to find what I want.

I would like to see a configurator added to the website that allows me to choose components, and then tells me which systems can include those components.

For example:
I tell it that I want:
A dual core processor between 2.8 and 3.2
4 gigs of ram
an nVidia gfx card with 512 ram
a 10k rpm sata drive

The site responds with: The following systems can be configured to contain your desired components:

Optiplex xxx
Precision xxx
Inspiron xxx 6 Comments »

Hire someone that knows gaming PCs so you don't have to ask...

Gaming submitted by pattyboy Mar 11

spend some time on the HardOCP forums, or the Tom's Hardware forums, and find someone that really knows what they are talking about and then hire them to consult. I doubt that it would cost much, shunt some free hardware their way and I'm sure they would be ecstatic.

Do we really have to think for you?

Or start a gaming club within Dell's employees, (manufacturing and sales, not corporate) and use them as a sounding board for new ideas. 17 Comments »

Dell: Make the Default RAM selection Range from Zero (0) Bytes (or Gigabytes) to the Max Possible and preset it to the "Dell Recommended" selection on all Systems in all Countries and Galaxy's

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge Feb 29

Dell, much like the OS the RAM selection should make available None or Zero to the Max allowable by the computer hardware, with the "Dell Recommended" the default selection.

This will allow the customer the OPTION of selecting the exact amount they want from the ground up. Yes, some of your customers need that extra coaching to select the proper amount, for them you can use your highlighted option selection of (Dell Recommends). Then your other more astute customers can then choose what they need based on their known knowledge and supply or inventory.

Yes, you can also give the RAM at a "Lower" Dell price if they buy it with the system like you do now (I'm holding back laughing).

Remember Options!

(See I'm flexible, its no longer Zero default, thanks for your input) 11 Comments »

Dell: Make the Default Hard Drive selection Range from None to the Largest allowable on that system and preset it to the "Dell Recommended" selection on all Systems in all Countries and Galaxy's

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge Feb 29

Dell, much like the way the OS selection is the Hard Drive selection should allow for all possible selections from None to the Largest hard drive you sell for that system at begin of the customers selection process of a Hard Drives.

This will allow the customer the OPTION of selecting the exact amount of Hard Drive space they want from the ground up. Yes , some of your customers need that extra coaching to select the proper or sufficient amount, for them you can use your highlighted option selection of (Dell Recommends). Then you other more astute customers can then choose what they need based on their knowledge and supply or inventory.

Yes, you can also give the Hard Drive at a "Lower" Dell price if they buy it with the system like you do now (I'm holding back laughing).

Remember Options!

(Again, updated per feedback on the RAM idea) 2 Comments »

Dell: The Dell Browser Computer

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge Mar 3

Dell! Create the first Dell Browser Computer!

Yes you read it right, I'll repeat it for those who have a tough time, Dell Browser Computer!

The computer will not have an OS or at least not an OS in the true sense of the word, yes it needs an underlying support system to prop up the Browser (using as many neutral words here to not lean on any side of the fence). Dell will construct this system to boot up and pop up a browser to interact with the computer world as seen by this computer. All interactions will be done solely through the browser, from surfing the net to accessing files which of course have to be browser compatible through addon's and special "Dell" provided services to process these files correctly.

So what do you do with this computer, well pretty much everything you do today but through the browser. Any service such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file management, calculator will all be accessible via the browser, yet I know I didn't mention every possible app in the planet but this is an example so if your app isn't listed fill it in here ______. Dell will provide the services to these applications so Dell will get the customers's service from day one! New Browser App, well its accessible through the Dell service, lost the computer well don't worry your files are on the Dell storage server, just power up, update the computer go get your files as you had been doing previous to the crash, death of the other Browser computer. Yes all interaction with the Dell services will be Secure using the latest in Cryptography to satisfy even the CIA director and of course in regulation with the NSA (making sure to cover for any people who don't trust this) of course for out of the US sales those countries will have to set their requirements.

All in all its a win-win for both the Dell Customer and Dell, customers always get latest and greatest app and Dell reaps the rewards of supplying the service (and monthly service charge, wink wink).

Yes I probably left out a few wrinkles and intracaties but hey thats what the discussion to follow is for, right. 27 Comments »

IdeaStorm: This Idea is for Idea's as what the Current Lighting Rod Should be (you seem to loose focus and leave the old ones eventhough they're dead)

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge Mar 3

Well lately we've seen the Lighting Rod topic to be left stale and dangling.

Lets use this idea to start our brainstorm of what the Lighting Rod Topic should be. At least allow for a list of them so it doesn't get stale and boring if not just stale and non-idea producing. (like we need even more ideas) 6 Comments »

Fix XPS 630 front panel

XPS products submitted by doomlord52 Feb 15

Ok, as some of us know, Dell is making an 'XPS 630'. Looks cool, but a pic from CES 2008 makes it look BAD. the fron fan is much to obviouse, and it looks like a bad window. Other than that.... cant wait!

More feedback from Dell on popular ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by pjeff Feb 15

I would like to see more (official) feedback from Dell on popular ideas eg. +1000 ideas.
For example, many people have been requesting an LED backlit screen for the XPS M1530. Look on any forum where this model is being discussed and you will see people saying that they are holding off on purchasing until it becomes available (I'm one of them!) so it would be helpful to know what is happening.

Another example would be illuminated keyboards. Saying it is "partially implemented" doesn't really tell us anything. We know you have done that! If a popular idea is not practical or its implementation is problematic for whatever reason, communicate back so discussion can take place. This is how brainstorming works!

I also wonder how many good ideas are overlooked because Dell believe the cost would be too great for the product in question. Be upfront about your concerns regarding costs. For example, you may find that Inspiron/Vostro customers would not be prepared to pay extra for a premium screen and illuminated keyboard but XPS customers are. Post polls so that members can vote on these issues and provide you with accurate data. We are here to help so use us. 7 Comments »

Release Systems with new major components on the same day they are annouced by the Hardware/Software Vendors

New Product Ideas, Service and Support submitted by lugo02 Feb 15

-Subtittle, Or at least on the day after.
e.g. When Nvdida announces a new Graphic Processor you can pick one up at Newegg.com and e-tailer that same day.

When ATI announce a new Graphics Card, you can bet that newegg.com has it.

I've have Seen Alienware have systems availble the same day that Intel/AMD/NVIDIA announces a new major component, yet I have to wait weeks or months before those new components can be configured on a Dell, but by then another major coponent is already out the door.

I am still waiting for you(Dell) to update the XPS 7xx with an NVidia 780i Motherboard chipset, until then I am holding my money.

Dell, we need faster development fom you.
oh yeah, I am still waiting on the 2408-HC 2 Comments »

Rename IdeaStorm To SuggestionBox

IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Feb 16

When I signed up to IdeaStorm I thought the whole point was for people to get together and come up with awesome ideas for Dell to implement. We could all vote up or down the idea and Dell would take on the most popular ideas.

It would seem however that I was wrong as the current moderators continually discourage conversation amongst IdeaStorm members. It seems like a very strange thing to do. To restrict creativity in an environment designed and intended to encourage creativity.

Granted some of the conversation does go off on a tangent. But that is part and parcel of creative discussion. Sooner or later someone, a member of the group and not a mod, will bring us back on track. That is how life works on an open forum on the internet. A lesson Dell clearly has not learned yet.

While some conversations don't seem to have anything to do with IdeaStorm at first glance they do serve to inspire IdeaStorm members. Personally I have found the suggestion to use Dell Forums for such conversation wanting for some stimulation. I prefer to discuss ideas in the ideas own thread. Not only is this a more familiar environment but it is also more appropriate as the idea it's self will attract participants who are interested in "participating".

So here is my suggestion. As Dell are clearly only interested in headline ideas created by individuals, rename IdeaStorm to SuggestionBox. Because that's all you'll ever have when ideas are created purely by individuals alone. 11 Comments »

Separate Hardware and Software Warranties

Service and Support submitted by lugo02 Feb 16

Dell, there are many people who would like a long hardware warranty without also having to pay for your software support warrantly.

You can continue offering the bundled warranty, but I believe many technical users would simple prefer paying for the hardware warranty only. Comment »

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

Konqueror-Compatible Dell Configurator

Dell Web Site submitted by zero79 Feb 17

Many Linux users use the Konqueror web browser, which is an alternative to Firefox. However, Dell's computer configurator site does not work very well with konqueror. The pictures of the computer are not shown, and it is not possible to progress through the steps to configure the computer. Please make the configurator compatible with Konqueror. 3 Comments »

IdeaStorm: Remove the Team Picture area on IdeaStorm

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge Feb 18

Some of the new add-ons, especially the "The Team" pictures has no business on IdeaStorm, a Business WebSite who's goal is to improve Dell not to "caricature" it.

In addition, this is offensive, the caricature of the Dell employees is offensive and demeaning, I mean does Dell do this to put them at a lower level than a regular employee? Does Dell feel they can't put the real picture up for any particular reason? I'm sure the feminism organization would throw a hissy fit if they saw this. Well I just forwarded it to them. The whole business aspect alone is really wrong, as far as taking them seriously, or am I the only one laughing at them? (the caricature's, not the persons, I know you were thinking the wrong thing, typical Dell assumptions)

Besides, those links only go on to waste precious time, I mean don't we want the ideas processed and implemented? Or does Dell want to spend time converting all its employee's pictures to caricatures? I'm sure if any IdeaStormer posted a caricature of a Dell employee they'd be banned or sent a nasty e-mail. Or are we also free to post caricature's of Dell employee's?

Edited per .chris's request or comment, see comments do add to the idea Dell, get with the program! 11 Comments »

Allow LCD screen of a Laptop to be turned OFF - provide a power button

Laptops submitted by greatidea Feb 18

Allow LCD screen of a Laptop to be turned OFF - provide a power button.

I observed that we can save a lot of battery power by turning off the screen. But when would we like to do that ? Yes, when we want to just listen to something while not watching or working on our PC, for ex. listen to songs (use it like a music player) or just when we want to do some long s/w installation,/maintenance but still save batteries. In such cases we can turn could be able to turn off the screen to save power.

Encourage Dell to make this change guys ! 15 Comments »

Same Day Computer Delivery

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by doctorcox Feb 18

This involves UPS’s new “package intercept” service to intercept a package that is in route to a store that sells Dell products. Customers could buy a computer and then intercept it just before it is delivered to a store. Dell could provide a web site that lists each computer shipment and the current location of the shipment. If it’s a computer that the customer wants and it is nearby it would be possible to get the computer delivered within a few hours. Eventually Dell could ship higher volumes in anticipation of a package intercept. 6 Comments »
