Offer Windows XP SP3 when it comes out - now is the time to make sure Microsoft will let you.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 10/09/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Sounds like WinXP Service Pack 3 will be coming out soon.

Dell: Please remember who your customer is.

It's time for you to start making sure Microsoft lets you ship WinXP-SP3 pre-installed on Dells.

I believe Microsoft's current thinking is that they won't let you and want you to force Vista on your customers instead.

Why might one want XP-SP3? Well - XP-SP2 leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to security (even according to Microsoft's Vista PR); and Vista leaves a lot to be desired in general. XP-SP3 might be the most viable windows OS for businesses.

Hello Again - Dedicated Teams

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering a dedicated team approach for customer service, where a customer would interact with the same people whenever they need customer care or technical support.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 84 Comments »

Advertise Graphics RAM correctly

Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!)

Should read: 512Mb physical memory and it actually be 512Mb physical memory

NOT: 512Mb** and then some tiny asterixed disclaimer on a linked page that points out that the 512Mb is some funky combination of 3Mb physical and the rest being pulled from virtual memory - this kills many graphic intense apps and games...

suprised no-one has sued over this? Not sure many buyers are even aware....

Improve the Idea Process on IdeaStorm

Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jan 31

The current way this site works lacks proper feedback and process to show the customer that their ideas are important to Dell. The process also does not allow the ideas to gain proper exposure from visitors that is needed to propel the ideas to the popular ideas front page. Here are some suggestions for improvement.

1. All ideas should be read by a Dell representative and tagged as acknowledged within 3 days of being posted. I know this will be difficult on old ideas but if you go through and read them you will spot lots of duplicates to merge in the process.

2. Every time Dell has a meeting to discuss the top ideas they should change the tag to appropriately identify Dell's reaction to the idea. Currently there are several ideas on the front page without a status tag that should have been discussed by Dell already.

3. When users visit the site they should be taken to the recent ideas page to give those ideas more visability. I'm sure that Dell's own research shows that most users only visit the first page or two of the popular ideas tab which is unfair to all the other ideas submitted.

4. Don't just delete ideas and send off an email to the poster, allow them to defend themselves first. While it only takes a minute to read an idea, some users have spent a lot of time creating it. Dell should ask for clarification or post a comment on why they feels it should be deleted and the poster should be given 3 days to respond (unless there is a TOU violation involved).

5. Have an open mind and quit being a bunch of bean counters. We have read responses from Dell worried about profitability of ideas. While profit is the primary goal of the company, sometimes you have to take a chance. A truely innovative idea may not earn direct profits but may garner significant press and show Dell as the leader is should be rather than just another follower.

Feel free to post any other ways you feel the process can be improved inside the comments of this idea. 38 Comments »

Add E-SATA Ports to notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dvt 02/17/07

E-SATA provides a way to add fast external storage with much better performance than USB or Firewire. Adding an E-SATA port would greatly improve the expandabiliy of Dell's notebook computers. 30 Comments »

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Help your customers through the Vista-SP1-making-machines-unbootable problems.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz Feb 15

Ideas for Dell:

  • Dell: Be aware that upgrading to SP1 can leave machines unbootable.
  • Dell: Be prepared to help your customers through these problems. A workaround from the microsoft forums is quoted below

From the forums.microsoft.com

[some guy] My install of the SP1 RC Refesh has gone wrong.
Everytime I start the computer it says:
Configurating updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
And then reboots, and reboots, and reboots ... I had it rebooting for over an hour before I stopped the madness. All the safe modes does the same, so how do I uninstall the installer, without being able to log in?

[someone else] I'm having exactly the same problem. HELP!

[and someone found a fix]
found a brute force solution to my problem.

I yanked the power coord when it said ”do not turn off your computer”. That resulted in a trashed filesystem - it wouldn't even boot (they weren't kidding).

I put the disk in another computer running XP, there I ran chkdisk which fixed the filesystem (took 2 hours).

When I put the disk back it booted into vista with no mention of the 'configurating updates'. But now I'm not sure if I dare try windows update again ...

Guess this is is the kind of quality and support people pay for when they buy proprietary software? ;-) 5 Comments »

Drivers & Downloads RSS

Simplify IT submitted by henkw Jan 28

It would be a nice addition to the Drivers & Downloads pages to have a RSS feed for every Product Model / OS / Language combination. This way, I could have all new downloads appear in Google Reader. 3 Comments »

Add Sales Support Area To Dell Forums

Dell Community, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie Feb 11

The "Sales Support" area would be specifically for people who are experiencing problems with the sales process.

For example advice on what to do if your order doesn't arrive, if you're not happy with the time it took for your order to arrive or if you're simply having trouble understanding Dells gobbledy gook. 9 Comments »

Consultant laptop .... More Ram ... More Hard drives

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by bigranger75th Feb 15

I am a Microsoft Certified Trainer, I also consultant for many large companies. I carry a terabyte of storage in external drives as well as 360 gig of storage on my laptop. Mostly this is taken up with VM's (virtual machines). I want a laptop with min of 8 gb or ram, and three hard drive bays. I don't use a CD/dvd drive much as I work all with ISO mount or unmount those. The Dell laptop I need, and would pay for, has to handle what I do. Carrying even a portable computer would be fine but where is the screen and keyboard/mouse. I know there is a lot of software companies which need a demo laptop system to do such things. I think demand would be higer then you think. Did I also mention a Quad core proc? 2 Comments »

Bring More Support positions to North America

Service and Support submitted by johnsteffens Feb 11

I know for the sites in Canada that this post is far too late but people do not want to speak to individuals whose primary language is not English. This makes communication difficult for several reasons, the person calling in cannot understand the support personal the support personnel may not understand what the caller is stating and there are also large social differences that affect the way people from different cultures interact. I myself have work for Dell in their Edmonton location in the Dell on Call Department and myself have had difficult times conducting a conversations with people in other departments. Also many Dell customers are not aware of the correct terminology for what they are trying to reference and thus making it more difficult to understand what they are trying to get across, this would be a much harder task if your grasp on the language was not 100%. 1 Comment »

Separate Hardware and Software Warranties

Service and Support submitted by lugo02 Feb 16

Dell, there are many people who would like a long hardware warranty without also having to pay for your software support warrantly.

You can continue offering the bundled warranty, but I believe many technical users would simple prefer paying for the hardware warranty only. Comment »

Price To High When Adding Components Configuring New XPS Systems

XPS products submitted by syrics06 Feb 4

When configuring an XPS system on the dell website I noticed the prices were very high when adding or upgrading parts.

Examples:

1) 2GB DDR2 667 TO 4GB DDR2 667 $150?
This shouldn't cost the customer more then $50.00.

2) 8800GT 512MB TO 8800 GTX $400?
The 8800GT is already a $300.00 card...shouldn't this be more like $200??

Vote for Dell to LOWER PRICING ON UPGRADES for XPS systems. 5 Comments »

Don't multiply votes by 10

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood Feb 18

When you cast a vote the idea gets +/- 10 points, while the user who submitted the idea gets 1 point. This distorts the real number of votes and voters.

Please give an idea +/-1 point for 1 vote and don't multiply by 10. 13 Comments »

Don't Disable HTML!

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood Feb 18

I just noticed that the idea to disable HTML is 'in progress' If you disable it we won't be able to post pictures anymore, which isn't very good.Lots of people use pictures to highlight their thoughts and ideas. Some ideas wouldn't be possible without pictures or they wouldn't make any sense.

So please don't disable HTML. Allow us to post pictures, add links, change text font, etc.

Do not sacrifice our creativity and freedom for security.

Add newer processor for a reasonable price like LENOVO

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by busterlee Feb 20

The following link shows how logically prices and current LENOVO has priced its upgrades. Dell should immediately upgrade to the current processor, remove all the extra overpriced memory on the package deals, and have reasonable pricing for upgrades.

Global Purchasing and Support

Dell, Service and Support submitted by albertane Feb 22

One thing that would make Dell invaluable as a business partner to medium and large business customers would be to offer global purchasing and support.

Our company has offices and sales reps around the world and they all need computers. Right now, we have to get our Dell Sales Rep in the US to give us contact information for a Sales Rep in whatever country we need to purchase for. Then we have to work with that Sales Rep, who usually has poor English skills to get new computers specified, quoted and ordered. This is very long, error prone process.

Dell should work to allow US Sales Reps to order systems with localized OS, applications, keyboard and power and for them to be able to ship anywhere in the world.

We should be able to call up our US Sales Rep, order a notebook with a Traditional Chinese OS and Office, and a Taiwan keyboard and power cord and have it shipped directly to our employee in Taiwan.

Please standardize the models and options that are available in different countries so that we can have a worldwide standard for our computers and don't have to choose different configurations for each country.

You should also provide global support so that we don't have to transfer warranties around if we move systems between countries or if an employee is traveling overseas and needs their computer fixed while they are away.

If Dell could do this, it would be invaluable to our company and would save us tons of time and money and give us more reason to continue purchasing from Dell. Comment »
