Beware of your new, well-funded (bigger than Dell) and well connected competitor.

Dell submitted by jmxz 06/28/07

Seems Dell has a new competitor in the computer business. ...

http://origin.arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070627-microsoft-testing-pc-sal...

Microsoft will begin selling PCs in India next month [...]

I would hope that Dell's not too dependent on this competitor; and if it is, that it takes steps to become less dependent on them in case the competition heats up. It'd be a shame if this new PC company could, for example, acquire their software more profitably than Dell giving them a competitive advantage in the PC business.

Note, that there's a word for getting backstabbed by your partners like this in the consumer electronics industry: "Zunked" http://gigaom.com/2006/07/22/zune/ 20 Comments »

Modular Webcam, any one?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by kschang 06/28/07

Not the next best thing since sliced bread for sure... but... Think about it...

One of the problems with webcam is mounting, and the fact that it's a separate piece of hardware.

Perhaps it's time to introduce a small port on the top of the screen, where a special webcam can be added later? This can be done to all laptops and notebooks. On models without the option, it's just a piece of plastic cover. On models with the option, it's a rotatable webcam with webcam, almost a snap-in installation.

You can put the SAME PORT on the next generation of LCD monitors. Home PC's need webcams too, albeit they may not need it "built-in" as much as notebooks and laptops, but they'll need them sooner or later. And having them built into the monitor should even accelerate their acceptance.

Sony's VAIO line of home PCs already have several models with built-in webcams. Extremely slick and stylish, but they're not modular. In fact, nobody else offers a modular webcam that fits into a monitor (or a notebook) that I can think of. 6 Comments »

Two PCs in one box (I don't mean dual/quad core)

Desktops and Laptops submitted by si 06/28/07

1 box which contains two seperate personalities:

If you want to do light work like surfing the web and/or downloading files then press the green power-on button. This powers up a very simple processor, a reduced area of your LCD monitor, a light version of Windows/Linux and storage running on solid state memory e.g. memory stick. This means e.g. you can leave your big file downloads running while only using a fraction of the normal power required.

If you want to do heavy processing work then press the normal power-on button. This powers up all the things that eat power like 100% of your big LCD screen, fast processors/multi processors, HDDs, DVDs, high-end graphics cards and all the associated cooling fans etc.

Ideally the eco processor can even add an extra boost to the performance system when needed. What do you think? 19 Comments »

Slot Loading Drives

Laptops submitted by drew08867 06/28/07

All dell notebooks should be fitted with slot loading drives similar to the macbook, ps3, and the recently released XPS 1330. They are less prone to damage, slimmer, and all together cooler. It fits with the direction dell is going. The new inspiron line is fantastic! Great job Dell! 4 Comments »

Make the option to upgrade to 4 gb of RAM

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by johnpro 06/28/07

Many of the new computers are not giving consumers the option to install more than 2 gb of ram. It would be nice to make computers with the ability to hold more than 2 gb. 6 Comments »

Quote screen sizes in metric

Monitors and Displays submitted by avoura 06/28/07

I think that it is about time that screen sizes were quoted in metric. All other parts of a PC are now quoted in metric, so why not the screen size? Instead of inches, give us a size in centimetres. For small screens use millimetres.
Which sounds bigger? 15 inches or 38 centimetres?
Dell could really lead the way here, with much larger sounding screens and using a measurement system that the majority of the world uses, i.e. metric. Outside of the USA, it seems that inches are only ever used now for 2 things, one of which is screen sizes, the other is too rude to say.
Things like kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes are all metric terms.
CDs and DVDs are designed to be 120 mm in diameter, or 80 mm for the smaller ones.
All fan sizes are quoted in cm or mm.
The overall size of notebooks is in cm or mm.
I have seen vertical and horizontal dimensions of screens given in cm, but for some reason, companies are reluctant to quote the diagonal measure in metric.
It is time to change and quote all screen sizes in metric. 22 Comments »

LED Back Lighting

Monitors and Displays submitted by drew08867 06/28/07

Dell should transition all monitors to LED back lighting. More cost effective (in terms of energy use), greener, longer life. 11 Comments »

Two 'Headed' Core 2 Duo

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by reg 06/28/07

Another company did this with the Pentium D:

1 Dual Core PC (box) - 2 keyboards, 2 mice, 2 monitors = 2 workstations.

Sharing a single copy of windows, legally - and even running MS Office, etc. for both clients.

Time slicing and the dual cores creates Two PCs for the price of one.

Even cut & paste between the two clients or lock that feature out. 4 Comments »
