Provide option of HDD which can be replaced with SSD in near future..

Servers and Storage submitted by vikramchauhan10 Feb 12

The time has come when DELL should provide option of HDD which can be replaced with SSD in near future. This is because in near future price of flash based SSD will drop, and then customer would like to replace the HDD with SSD, and carry HDD as a backup memory in separate case. This will also add to battery time due to low power consumption of SSD, along with faster response. hope DELL will start thinking and working on this idea. 6 Comments »

Make peace with Apple

Dell submitted by juanteje Feb 7

Make peace with Apple and provide support for MacOS when it comes to drivers for all products other than computers. At the end of the day it is lucrative for both parties to come to an understanding. 3 Comments »

partner with APPLE: sell MacOS for Dell hardware

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Software submitted by zanlok Feb 2

Seriously! Consider this: MacOS now runs on top of Linux with PC hardware - Intel and Nvidia. Why not? This can be more choice for the consumer. Also, why not create new products with them in the iPod space. 13 Comments »

advanced port replicator docking solution for XPS 1730

Gaming, Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by zanlok Jan 25

Something that I really see as missing for the 1730 is an integrated docking solution. I mean a motherboard-direct dock that locks in to something like the D/Port. I am especially interested in one that offers a high resolution DVI video connection. I mean, we are definitely paying for supreme video features when we drop $5,000 (or more) on an SLi gaming laptop, right?

I want to be able to dock my 1730 onto a replicated connection to my 24" flat panel running at 1920x1200.

Replicating all standard cable connections would be an awesome feature: DVI, VGA, LAN, PS2 kb/mouse, and maybe 6 USB ports. We probably don't really even need serial, parallel, or modem ports on a dock these days. If serial and parallel make it in the mix, fine. But lots of USB is highly adviseable. Many printers are USB now. Most mass storage devices I would want on the dock are also USB, so lots of those is great. And, hello Nellie (!), but if an eSATA connection was available on the dock, that would truly set Dell and the XPS 1730 apart from the rest!

The third-party USB and xpress card solutions out there are totally unacceptable, because they only support lower resolutions, and they don't even support very good refresh rates, either. I understand that the bandwidth required is the limitation. Maybe if an xpress connection were developed, that could be used. But nothing IEEE like that is in the works. Also, who wants to have to keep plugging in an xpress card? USB 2.0 isn't that much of a hassle, but there is absolutely no way it can support all of the bandwidth for video, networking, keyboard, etc, etc.

So please, Dell, engineer a dock that *does* support the bandwidth required for high resolution video. Better yet, engineer a dock for my 1730 with SLi 8800M GTX cards that supports *DUAL* monitors! Aim high and set yourselves apart!

I loved my old D600 and the D/Port. I never bought a D/View, but I'll bet I would have loved that as well. I would to lock the D600 into the dock, and say hello to video at any resolution I wanted to use on my monitor. I actually remember playing UT2004 with a very reasonable performance / framerate.

But, these days I'm more into gaming performance rigs. I've been very blessed and being in a good financial place affords me this luxury :)

If you demote, let me know why! 4 Comments »

Bluetooth Number Keypad Option for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by rietnau Jan 27

I would like to see Dell offer a Bluetooth number pad option for laptops. The world is adopting wireless options and a search for bluetooth number pad's has turned up nothing. The closest options to external number pads are 2.4 ghz and cable based. There is one option though, and it is the Logitech Dinovo Keyboard set. I am not about to pay $170 for a keyboard set when all I want is a number pad.

The XPS M1330 only has two usb ports and connecting a number pad (whether 2.4 ghz or cable based) to it would limit it to one. I would also like to keep the number of peripherals sticking out of my laptop to a minimum, so a Bluetooth number pad would be ideal.

Dell has done a great job offering the Bluetooh travel mouse and a number pad would probably be well received. The technology is already out. Dell should be the first to offer the Bluetooth number pad option. 2 Comments »

Can we have multi touch trackpads on all dell models? i know the technology used by apple in its products is probably patented, so maybe theres a different technology that dell could use? I know that there have been several projects by other people who investigated multi touch technologies in the past. 1 Comment »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Dell... Offer Faster RAM!

Sales Strategies submitted by incubus240 Jan 20

Dell needs to offer faster RAM (i.e. If the FSB on the laptop is 800Mhz then match with 800Mhz RAM rather than 667Mhz RAM). I always have to buy the minimum amount of RAM for the system and end up throwing it away. They charge me $350 for 2GB of 667Mhz then I turn around and purchase 4GB of 800Mhz for $130. Since they make you buy at least 2GB... it is such a waiste! 7 Comments »

Add Service Tag for DELL LCD Monitors

Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by lucida Jan 18

As you might have known, there is no service tag for LCD Monitors if you purchase them separately, otherwise, they share the same service tags as the whole system.

In order to get tech. support of monitor, one has to call instead of using online chat/email support. And, even on call, its still very annoying to repeat "there is no service tag for my monitor".

So why can't DELL just add the little sticker on a LCD, some LCDs cost more than a desktop, even laptop, and usually carry a longer warranty(3yr by default as 1yr for PC). 3 Comments »

Dell should discuss the rumored ultraportable with us

Latitude products, Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jan 17

There has been much speculation about a leaked picture of a possible upcoming Dell ultraportable. Some say 13.3 inch others think it is 15" and some even speculate it is the 16" from the XPS they showed at CES. Upon magnification you can see it has the following visable: Slot load DVD, 2 USB, Ethernet and 2 other ports (display port and power?) on the left side. Also visable is built in web cam on the LED lit screen. It doesn't appear to have media buttons or a fingerprint reader.

The guys in marketing and developement must be getting sick of being scouped by Engadget and with all the flack they have gotten over the other recent releases (XT, M1330 and M1530). Why not create some good PR, scoup Engadget for once and find out some of the complaints while there is still time to tweak the system. Discuss this system Dell as it can only lead to a better product and greater buzz for it in the process. 45 Comments »

OS X on Dell Hardware

New Product Ideas submitted by daveander Jan 18

Remember when Michael Dell expressed interest in licensing OS X for Dell PCs? Apple responded with an emphatic NO, but there's a way to accomplish this without Apple's blessing. Simply offer an Inspiron model (Desktop and Notebook) with the exact same hardware as the MacBooks/iMac. Then let the end users install OS X themselves via one of the methods described on sites such as www.osx86project.org. Many of us have been using OS X on our Dells for quite some time now, but we've run into problems with unsupported hardware. Making a Dell with the same hardware the Macs use would help us out immensely. It should be an Inspiron model to keep prices low, since most of the OSx86 users would just buy real Macs if they could afford them. Please consider this request. There are many people in the OSx86 community who would jump at the chance to buy a MacBook compatible Inspiron. This could be done with little effort on Dell's part and with no risk of litigation from apple, since the end users would be doing the OS X installations. 16 Comments »

Light up KeyBoard for all Devices.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by jillykae2012 Jan 16

My Idea is for all keyboards on desktops and/or laptops to have LED lights to actually light up the keys. There can be a button that you can push to either turn on or off the LED lights. Now not necessarily each key,but a light in each corner. I know I can get frustrated if I cannot see the keyboard at night. Thank you. I hope my Idea was helpful. 4 Comments »

Emailing the order details to friends and kin

Advertising and Marketing, Service and Support submitted by gopinath.subbegowda Jan 11

Hi,

When I purchased some thing for a friend or a relative thru dell online, when I check the order status I would also like to email that page to the person for whom I am buying the item. Please include the PRINTER icon on each page so that any relavent page and information can be mailed. This would also mean you can easily get in touch with new prospective customers.

Thanks and Regards,

TrueLife LCD Display Screens Should Have An Optional Anti-Glare Coating (like camera lenses & eye-glasses)!

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by hjwasson 05/09/07

There are many posts regarding the fact that TrueLife displays are far too reflective for brightly backlit conditions. User responses to the complaints suggest getting a business class display with anti-glare filter - but these displays have not kept pace, are too dim, have poor pixel response rates and often have poor color rendition.

My suggestion is a compromise: Have the option to have TrueLife displays with an Anti-Reflective coating applied - just like those found on photographic optics or eye glasses! Such coatings are not as effective as traditional anti-glare matte screens, but significantly reduce reflections without greatly impacting light transmission (which is why they are used in photographic optics - they actually enhance contrast and reduce unwanted light scatter). They would moderately eliminate most reflections, while still allowing TrueLife displays to be bright and punchy.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-reflective_coating
http://www.firstvisionmedia.com/uww/2005_ar/enhance_properties.html
http://www.firstvisionmedia.com/uww/2004_ar/ar_product_showcase.html
I'm sure that Seiko, Hoya, Essilor, iCoat and others would vie for the chance to open up a new market for their coatings, and thus bring more profits to them (and lower costs to us). Some IdeaStorm members might be concerned about scratching the coating - but consider:

1. LCD panels are already prone to scratching, and care must be taken in their cleaning.
2. Modern Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings, with their multiple layers, are far more resistant to scratching than they used to be.
3. AR coatings tend to repel dust, so the need for cleaning would be less frequent.
4. With the use of a microfiber cloth (and mild liquid cleaning formulations when needed), the AR coating and display will remain pristine for many years of service.

If you would like to see modern Anti-Reflective coatings applied to TrueLife displays (as an optional upgrade) please promote this post.

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit 06/21/07

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.

With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...

Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...

The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.

Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*

Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o

* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi. 11 Comments »
