Ad Campaign: What can you do with Ubuntu?

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by limulus 09/04/07

There are currently ideas under review, such as "make ubuntu shine" which relate to advertising Dell's Ubuntu systems. If Dell decides to do some ads, here's an idea for an ad campaign:

"What can you do with Ubuntu?"

Find one or more people who have bought a Dell Ubuntu system and have them show off what they can do with their systems; string the clips those together into a commercial. Some themes that should become obvious:

* easy software installation and updates

* command line not necessary (Ubuntu is very much a GUI OS)

* compiling software not necessary

* full range of applications

* 3rd party proprietary apps, like Flash and Google Earth

* all the little games you could ever want (e.g. Sudoku)

* 'it just works'

* "wobbly windows" and other spiffy cool effects for fun :)

Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 10/10/07 **REVIEWED**

An Open BIOS for Linux would free it from the DOS legacy code and speed boot times.

The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!

Our current priority is to expand Linux availability by bringing more platforms and languages to market. Read what daniel_j has to say.

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Ubuntu Dell Repo

Linux, Service and Support submitted by tekhawk 07/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments »

Update Drivers for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by benjamin89 09/22/07

Example: nVidia has released multiple new drivers continuing to tweak settings and making them more compatible with Vista and games. Dell has not updated its drivers for nVidia products since June, and one only can install Dell drivers for Dell laptops.

Update the drivers for your products regularly or allow the manufacturer of the product's drivers to install. 9 Comments »

Dell; PROMOTE Linux and OSS in Education

Advertising and Marketing, Education, Linux submitted by phubert 09/24/07

*
Learning Linux and _using_ OSS in education at all levels (primary, middle school, secondary, college and university, trades) will provide BETTER, FOUNDATIONAL education than the proprietary alternatives (Windows and Apple OS).
*
In addition this will result in significant cost savings for schools.
*
My original idea was _merged_ with one that did _not_ address these points! 24 Comments »

No Limits! Make **all** choices available **anywhere** in the world

Sales Strategies submitted by mrw 09/16/07

First example: The Germans are second class customers, because they don't get the same choices for Ubuntu Laptops as in the USA. We here in Switzerland are even third class customers, because we do not get an Ubuntu Laptop at all.

Other example: The choices I can make for a notebook depends on how I walked through your shop! Sometimes for the same Model, I can chose a low end Harddisk, sometimes not. That's absolutely ridiculous! Please allow any possible hardware combination!

Allow to select any matching hard disk in any laptop (or desktop)! Allow to setup any kind of memory, especially e.g. one(!) 2GB module instead of two 1GB modules, give the choice for between either a mirroring display or an anti-glare display for any available display size and resolution. If technically possible, allow to choose between NVidia and ATI, and allow to chose the Memory of the card. Allow to completely deselect the operating system and all kind of installed software.

First: Make all offers available anywhere in the world!

Second: Do not limit the possible combinations!

Shouldn't the customer be king? Let us all choices! 34 Comments »

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

The next Step, Dell offers More Pre-Installed Linux

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by tripleii 03/29/07

I read the announcement about Dell offering more Linux pre-installed choices. I have been scanning newsgroups and wanted to consolidate some ideas. I am sure you have thought of most of these, but just in case. Everyone, put in your tips on any "gotcha" you think might come up for customers, so Dell can proactively eliminate problems.

1) Whatever the distro (I suspect Ubuntu), make a KDE/Gnome choice available. Not two distro's, but one distro with both desktops installed. The user gets to pick at login which to use (you can default to Gnome or KDE). Minimal extra work.

2) On the desktop, and on the purchase page and for all your sales reps, where to get software. On the desktop an icon called "Get Software" that brings up the package manager. On the website, a notice stating that Linux software is almost all free and available through the web, that's why you don't find it at Best Buy.

3) For the web page and the sales staff, a list of fully functioning Linux supported peripherals. Why not sell the extra's when a Linux PC is purchased, just make sure that the MFC printer is fully functional before you sell it.

4) It must be cheaper. All of this is for naught if the same machine costs the same as the Windows machine (or more than the Windows machine). I am not sure how you are going to avoid the MS tax when you sell another OS pre-installed. The Linux community avoided all earlier offerings because MS was paid anyway.

5) Include the image DVD (nominal charge of say $2 OK). No one, Windows, Linux, anyone wants to burn the backup CDs/DVDs when they get their computer home. Slide in the DVD, boot the machine and in 15 minutes you are back to the stock install.

6) Proprietary Codecs, etc. We know MS and many others truly want you to fail and lose money. What better way than to promote a less rich multi-media experience. Here your lawyers can help, but I a link on the desktop called "Investigate Multimedia" that links to a 3rd party site with no affiliation with Dell ( ;-) ) that outlines in devastatingly easy terms how to get MP3, WMV, all that working for your customers. I would suggest similar for Nvidia or ATI is they are not amenable to your including it with your offering.

Take this link off your Ubuntu page

Linux submitted by badblood 07/05/07

The Dell Ubuntu page (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/ubuntu?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs) has this link on the page:

LINK : "Shop Dell PCs with Windows"

For the sake of decency remove it! 15 Comments »

Linux Drivers

Linux submitted by gdadd 03/13/07

In the linux world a hacker is someone that writes code for the good of the community. There are sooooo many linux "HACKERS" out there that your hardware vendors, video card-printer-router-etc., could get them for a dime, or even free. I'm sure the allure of 600,000 plus new customers would tempt vendors to look into at least hiring liaison to the linux community. Comment »

GIVE UBUNTU USERS BACK THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY OPTIONS!

Linux, Service and Support submitted by starks 06/04/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I find it rather atrocious that Dell has decided to remove extended warranty options on all new Ubuntu systems. GIVE US BACK WHAT WE DESERVE!

If you want proof that Dell has shafted us, here it is:

This was an ordering system glitch (which is now fixed), for more details click here.

Firefox, Mozilla thunderbird as well as mozilla sunbird

Linux, Software submitted by rakeshinnovation 02/27/07

I have been an internet user for the past 5 years, I have used all almost all the browsers, and without doubt i can say that in terms of performance, security, and user interface the open source browsers are the best, the kind of addons and features i get with Firefox i will never be getting with internet explorer, so i was thinking why do not dell ship computers with Firefox Mozilla thunderbird and the calendar software subird???? it could add to the efforts of the open source community, me as a supporter for the open source community would love to see Dell systems with open source applications, I would request that all people who support open source please cast your valuable vote for this idea, I was also thinking that if the Mozilla community cooperates with Dell , Dell could have a customized browser which will be really good for the customers of the Dell and it could add value to the Dell line of products, lets see the what Dell's thinks about this idea//?

Do post your feedbacks,
