What is missing: Inspiron 1720

Inspiron products, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by albano 08/16/07

URGENT:
RAID support. It is ridiculous that a two HD bay notebook does not offer this;
Gigabit Ethernet. I don’t believe that my wireless LAN is fastest that my wired LAN;
HDMI / DVI support. A notebook with Blue Ray without HDMI. No comments;
Nvidia 8700M GT. The Windows Vista Experience Index is limited by the 8600M GT.

Will be a must:
Choice of OS. All Vista and Linux;
Car power adapter accessory;
Backlight keyboard;
Fingerprint scanner;
A bigger battery. It’s a lot of space in the back of this notebook to attach a bigger battery. 6 Comments »

Dell needs to pick up the pace in releasing new designs

Dell, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Mar 13

Dell is notorious for lack of innovation and has been making strides to change. Unfortunately they are still loosing out because they take to long to get to market and by the time they do someone else has usually beat them to the punch.

Here is an example: At CES this year Dell showed off an XPS 16 inch Laptop concept that has yet to make it to market.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/06/dell-showing-off-16-inch-xps-concept-laptop/

Yesterday Acer (who overtook Dell in notebook sales recently) came out with its Gemstone line of notebooks.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/acer-unveils-the-second-gen-gemstone/

"Coming in a special blue ("Gemstone Blue," how wild), the new 16- and 18.4-inch machines feature 16:9 1080p screens, 1.5GHz Penryn processors, 512MB NVIDIA 9650m GS graphics, and those Blu-ray drives we heard about. The graphics chip is at the center of Acer's new CineReal system, which offloads BD playback to the GPU and provides Dolby headphone output (and real 5.1 sound on the bigger model)."

Pick up the pace Dell. 30 Comments »

Make Next-Gen Connectors Standard on all XPS Models

XPS products, Desktops and Laptops submitted by icarus75 Apr 15

Dell, please make these connectors STANDARD on all upcoming XPS Desktops and Notebooks:

1) eSATA (Self-Powered)

2) DisplayPort 1.1 and / or HDMI 1.3b (both with Audio)

3) FireWire 3200 - IEEE 1394c (9-pin Powered)
or at minimum, FireWire 800 i.e. Alienware m15x

Please kill off 4-pin Firewire ports. They're unpowered, relatively slow, and flimsy.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Add E-SATA Ports to notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dvt 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

E-SATA provides a way to add fast external storage with much better performance than USB or Firewire. Adding an E-SATA port would greatly improve the expandabiliy of Dell's notebook computers.

Multiple HDD option on higher end notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by hjwasson 04/23/07

I would like to see two hard drive bays on higher end "performance" notebook computers, like the XPS line. Two bays would allow for RAID 0 striping (increased performance and capacity) or RAID 1 mirroring (data redundancy) as well as more prosaic "second drive for more storage capacity" options. People interested in saving money or weight could simply opt to keep the second HDD bay empty. 3 bays would allow for RAID 5, but is probably not feasible on a notebook - but 2 bays are. Alienware (lately acquired by Dell) has them on their performance notebooks (http://www.alienware.com/product_pages/notebook_all_default.aspx)

The current XPS M1710 is getting long in the tooth, and could certainly do with an update. Options such as dual HDD's, dual (SLI) GPU's, and the A/V Communications module (an option on the current XPS M1210) would be a good start! 5 Comments »

Upgrade XPS M1710 to have Dual Hard Drive Bays (Duall HDD)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage, Laptops submitted by wmfoster 04/09/07

When you update the XPS M1710 laptop in May / June for with the new Intel Centrino Pro chipset, can you add a 2nd SATA drive bay to the laptop?

This would allow running a very low latency SSD for the OS and a separate 160 or 200G drive for data files.

It would also make your top end laptop more competitive against the Toshiba Qosmio and HP Pavilion dv9000t.

Dual HDD (ie. Dual SATA HDDs) are potentially very useful. And in a high end desktop replacement Laptop I don't think the little bit of extra weight is such a big deal. 1 Comment »
