giving old computers to underpriveleged people

Environment, Education submitted by drorb73 May 25 **REVIEWED**

An acquaintance of mine is going to start college soon on financial aid, and does not have the resources to purchase a new computer. Currently lots of people send their old computers back to "recycling" programs whereby the machines are shipped to China where some kid breaks them open bare-handed. Instead, computer manufacturers could reinstall some reasonable software on them and give them away (perhaps at a token cost) to under-priveleged people here in developed countries. I have no doubt that lots of perfectly decent 3 year old computers get junked - and there are lots of poor Americans and Europeans that could use these machines for another several years. Wouldn't this be more "green"? Thanks!

Stop Being A Microsoft Poodle!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by aikiwolfie May 26

Stop being a Microsoft poodle and start featuring some of the other products Dell carries on it's web site more prominently. I'm not just talking about Linux here. I'm also talking about all of the other great products Dell carries from other manufacturers like Belkin and Logitech.

Unfortunately however as soon as we get anywhere on Dell.com it's all "Dell Recommends Windows Vista". I find this very off putting and it ruins the whole experience of shopping on-line. I don't want to be constantly bombarded with Microsoft adds.

Making the shopping experience more pleasant for consumers helps to simplify their IT experiences by removing stress, which reduces confusion, which leads to better purchasing decisions, which results in happy customers, which generates awesome word of mouth advertising, which brings in bundles of cash for Dell and huge dividends for your shareholders! 4 Comments »

Business Useful Laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by johnmc May 27

I'd like to see Dell offer a laptop, designed for mobile business. Specifically one with a built in "signature pad" so that a form could be designed in Microsoft Word or even better in Infopath and the client could sign using a stylus on the laptop itself. Forms could be created entirely on the laptop in the field from templates, signed in the field and then printed on a mobile printer, with a copy given to the client and an electronic signed copy synchronized as soon as they return to the office. I realize that a tablet pc can do this now, but this would be a more simple and effective way to fill out the forms, most supermarkets have a signature pad that almost everyone is familiar with, an area on the laptop with a signature block should not be that hard to build in. Other features should include wireless, solid state memory hard drive, and the built in lighting like some of the other "rugged" models, and the availability of a port replicator or docking station. Also I'd like to see a docking station with a built in external hard drive so that while in the car you could create a backup of the laptop for emergency recovery in case the laptop itself gets stolen or damaged, at least you would not have lost files. 1 Comment »

Ubuntu Linux systems Down Under

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by finkisadink May 10

At present it's not possible to buy a Dell system with Linux preinstalled within Australia. This is something that I believe should be resolved as soon as practicable — at present I'm having to buy systems with Windows preinstalled, only to never use that license... and this also costs me time & money as I have to perform a full SOE build from scratch. 5 Comments »

Stop Advertising Windows Vista On Your Linux Pages

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 11

A while ago I noticed the Latitude XT promotional demo video in the Linux section of the Dell community page. And questioned it's relevance then. In the open source page on Dell.com Dell is still trying to steer open source users back to Windows.

The Latitude XT is a Microsoft Windows only product and is not offered with Ubuntu or any other form of Linux so far as i know. In fact the demo video shows the Latitude XT running Windows Vista. Please stop badgering open source users and stop hounding them with this Windows Vista nonsense. We've already decided we're not interested. 7 Comments »

cable hook up

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by bari4896 May 11 **ALREADY OFFERED**

bear in mind that I'm part of the dinosaur generation that isn't exactly computer savy. Would it not be possible to add to a tower to allow cable tv hookup so that I wouldn't need a separate monitor and television?

You can get a TV Tuner card to perform this function

Industrial Grade Laptops

Environment, Laptops submitted by mauribe May 7

I work in energy consultancy in industrial environments. I have to use a laptop by [sometimes upon] industrial equipment. Industrial environments feature vibrations, high temperatures, dirt and magnetic fields. Also, when you're walking down the aisle you can't type, but take notes instead.

These being the requirements, I'd love to have a 13" tablet computer with a sturdy easy-to-clean screen cover, XP (hate Vista... I'd really prefer linux, but windows is the standard here as well), SSD disk (to withstand vibrations), wristband (for portability), loaded with audio (memo-taking) applications, handwriting recognition and graphic memo pad. 3 Comments »

Let Home customers know it's OK to buy from the Business section and vice versa.

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by jmxz May 7

From a conversation with Dell's robert_p, under a different Idea it seems that "Home" customers are welcome to buy from Dell's "Small & Medium Business" section, and Dell's "small and/or medium business" customers are welcome to buy from Dell's "Home & Home Office" section.

This is very useful since often computers in the "Small Business" section may be more appropriate for home use (the Latitude's light weight and reliability make it a great college computer); and often computers in the "Home" section may be more appropriate for office use (where the better graphics options in Home are valuable for graphical visualization). It's also useful because an identically-spec'd system may be cheaper the Home Section one week, and then be cheaper in the Small Business section the next.

I think many Dell Business and Home customers are missing out on the best deals and failing to find machines that meet their needs because the home user's are afraid of falsely claiming to be a business and because the business customers are afraid of falsely claiming to by buying systems for personal use.

So a few ideas:

1. Assuming robert_p's right in saying Home Customers are welcome to buy from Small Business - add links to the Home product pages saying "If you don't see what you need here, check out Dell's Small Business section. You're welcome to buy those for Home use too".
2. Assuming robert_p's right in saying Small Business are welcome to buy from the Home section - add links to the Small Business product pages saying "If you don't see what you need here, check out Dell's Home section. You're welcome to buy those for Business Use too".
3. Extrapolating - if it's also OK for Home an Small Biz customers to buy from Dell's "Large Business" and "Government, Education, Healthcare & Life Sciences" section, add those links too.
4. Make a price comparison engine that compares the prices of an identically spec'd system from each of Dell's sections so I don't have to manually dig through all of your painful to navigate website sections to compare Home vs Small Business myself. 2 Comments »

gives a higher graphic card for 15 inch XPS laptop

Gaming, XPS products submitted by hanlya May 6

it is better if Dell offer a gaming product with high graphic in 15 inch laptop..for example m1530..dell should offer for an additional better video card such as 8800Gt or 8700 GT..and this m1530 will be like kaboom...1 of the best 15 inch laptop ever build..so i suggest dell put additional option for higher graphic or just build a new product 15 inch laptop with gaming characteristic..or maybe m1535..with a better video card.. 2 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Do not scale back build-to-order systems

Desktops and Laptops submitted by masterr Apr 5 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Today in the news I read that Dell "is moving away from its build-to-order model to reduce costs. Dell is limiting the degree to which buyers can dictate specifications while expanding its line of prepackaged models". Please do not do this. The options build-to-order system is what sets Dell above some of the competition. By scaling this back and removing customization choices you remove some of the appeal of buying a Dell machine online. Please do not scale this back.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.

Allow anyone to get any product in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site.

Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice May 4

Sometimes Dell posts some products only in certain channels; for example home offices cannot get Vostros.

It is like saying that business users want Vostros, but nobody in, for example, a home office, would want it. But some home offices might want it. For some people in home offices, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all products actually.

In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who do encounter this.

An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all products in all of your channels.

(I want to note that I posted this in an earlier post, but that was only for PCs. I decided to generalize it to all products). 3 Comments »

Drop the Inspiron line of notebooks

Laptops submitted by canadaboy May 5

caveat: I'm writing this from an Inspiron 9400

I'm checking through all the laptop brands I can find on the Dell.ca website (as grouped by Dell on the site):

XPS Gaming Laptops
XPS Laptops
Inspiron Laptops
Vostro Laptops
Latitude Laptops
Dell Percision Mobile
Alienware Laptops (not on the site, but now made by Dell)
A ruggedized version (not sure under what line)

That's 7 (or 8) laptop brands, and I wouldn't mind less brands (many are very very similar, older Vostro's were essentially Inspirons in dull clothing).

I suggest removing the Inspiron as the XPS models effectively fill the same role, are new, and look nice. Create the 1730 XPS and retire the Inspiron line.

I was hoping for the Inspiron line, because I've used it as my budget gaming/office computer (the 9400 still has a good video card compared to current models), but it looks from your releases that the Inspiron line isn't getting high end gaming video cards. So please put them into the XPS line, and streamline your offering.

My suggested breakdown -

Consumer Budget:
Vostro

Consumer Primary Brands:
XPS
XPS Gaming

Consumer High-End:
Alienware

Business Standard:
Vostro

Business Specialized:
Latitude Laptops
Dell Percision Mobile 7 Comments »

Public Education

Education, Desktops and Laptops submitted by infinitelink May 6

While SSDs are increasingly more popular in lay-media, I recommend that Dell ensure that well into the future the traditional HD will be nigh available: reason being that SSDs, far as I know, wear-out very quickly after a certain number of write cycles.

Personally for important data and, well, unimportant data, as it's my data, I want to ensure it'll keep on being available and safe-enough, which the good 'ol platter-drive provides. SSDs are too fashionable and for being soft and quick to die. I wish that the media would make this more known: buy an ipod touch today...expect it to die in, maybe, a few years. : (

I like this order: SSDs backed-up by HDs, and only used in those little gadgets rather than for important stuff; tape to back-up HDs for especially long-term uses (suprisingly the tape holds up quite well when preserved correctly). Note: not saying Dell should (or should even consider) tape, just saying I hope it keeps HDs around for quite a while, even considering that HDs are less reliable than advertised, they're more dependable than SSDs.

Thus it would be nice that, when SSDs become more available at Dell, that education be provided (i.e. pages describing the pros, cons, and these details--more ably than I can!). 24 Comments »

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.
