INSPIRON 1720

Inspiron products submitted by srikapardhi Aug 14

THE INSPIRON 1720 MODEL IS ONE OF THE BEST MODELS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET WITH EVERY FEATURE ENABLED IN IT.IT HAS ALSO SOME BASIC BACKLOGS TO BE DEALT WITH . THEY ARE
1)ITS SOME WHAT HEAVY(THE WEIGHT SHOULD BE REDUCED)
2)THRE ARE NO SEPARATE ON AND OFF BUTTONS FOR BLUE TOOTH AND FOR WI-FI TO BE HANDLED ON.IF THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE BUTTONS IT WOULD CONSERVE BATTERY LIFE.
3)IT DOES NOT HAVE HDMI PORT
4)AND IT DOES NOT HAVE BACKLIT LEYBOARD LIGHT
------------------------------------------------------------------------... THAT MAKE US THINK IT WOULD BE NICE IF 1720 HAVE IT
1)A FM RADIO WHICH IS COMMON IN THE MOBILE PHONES IN THESE DAYS
2)AN IR PORT USEFUL TO TRANSFER DATA
3)THE BACKLITE KEYBOARD
4)THE DOCK APPLICATION WHICH IS PRESENTLY INSTALLED BY THE DELL COMPANY.
5)A FINGER PRINT READER OR A FACE DETECTION SECURITY SYSTEM WOULD BE AMAZING IN THIS MODEL
------------------------------------------------------------------------... I HAVE VISTA HOME PREMIUM INSTALLED ON MY LAPTOP EVEN THOUGH I TRIED MANY TIMES TO DUAL BOOT IT WITH XP PROFESSIONAL SP2 IT IS COPYING FILES AND NOT AT ALL INSTALLING THE MULTI OS MEANS XP INSTALLATION IS FAILING DUE TO SOME HARD DRIVE DRIVER PROBLEMS. TOTALLY I RATE INSPIRON 1720 AS 4.5 ON A SCALE OF 5 . I REOMEND ANY ONE TO SIMPLY BUY IT WITHOUT ANY FURTHER THOUGHT , WHEN U READ ALL THE ABOVE CIRCUMSTANCES.
------------------------------------------------------------------------...
I ALSO REQUEST THE DELL TEAM TO PUBLISH A DOCUMENTATION ON 1)
HOW TO INSTALL DELL MEDIA DIRECT AND THE VISTA OS IF IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO RE INSTALL THE OS ALSO
2) ANOTHER DOCUMENTATION ON HOW TO DUAL BOOT IT WITH VISTA AND XP SP2 , ALSO THE DRIVERS REQIRED FOR VISTA AND XP ARE SAME ARE SAME OR NOT. WAITHING FOR THE DELL TEAM TO PUBLISH THE DOCUMENTATION ON DUAL BOOT FOR VISTA AND XP AND ITS TROBLE SHHTING METHODS .
THANKS TO DELL FOR THE GIVEN OPPORTUNITY. 9 Comments »

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments »

Become the open source OEM

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Can we get Studio Hybrid with Ubuntu?

Desktops, Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by arhere Aug 1

I LOVE the new Studio Hybrid PC's. Can we get it preinstalled with Ubuntu? This would drop the price even more and be a GREAT PC for surfing the Web and such.

If you say no to this idea, can we at least get a "Ubuntu capable" certification for the hardware?

Include Matte Sunfilter for Glossy-Screen Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by tigerforce Apr 17 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Many people (including me) love Dell's high resolution, high contrast glossy laptop displays. However they can become annoyingly unusable under harsh sun or florescent lighting. It would be nice if Dell included an optional filter that could be attached to the screen to block glare. I think more people would get the High-Def screens if Dell did this. (I'm thinking of something similar to this http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/ComputerFilter/Home/ only with a matte anti-glare coating).

Offer a 14.1" Vostro again!!

Monitors and Displays, Vostro products submitted by winoffice Aug 2

Why do you offer THREE 15.4" Vostros, but not even ONE 14.1"??

I am disappointed that Dell no longer offers this very common screen size on what would otherwise be one of the best notebook lines, and that they replaced it with a 13.3" one.

I have compared 14.1" to both 15.4" and 13.3", and 14.1" is far better than both

Please Dell, offer a 14.1" Vostro notebook PC again. I do not want to be forced into buying another notebook line to get a 14.1" screen size.

Yes I know that this is a duplicate, even of my own idea, but I want a Vostro, and it must be a 14.1".

And if you demote this idea I expect a good reason why. 14 Comments »

discontinue all Celeron processors!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by ptcase 04/20/07

I know that Celeron processors had their place in the computing world. Maybe they still in the educational arena where most have "dummy consoles" hooked up to a really fast T-1. With the edition of Vista now added to our headache, Dell please don't sell Celeron based computers with inferior RAM and other peripherals along w/ very unnecessary pre-installed programs. Most of them are useless and just piss of the customer or other repeat would be buyers. 18 Comments »

ELectronic calendar

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by tawbb1 Jul 24

This is not exactly a computer idea, but sort of something new. I would like to be able to buy an electronic calendar for my sister, but I don't know if they are made. Not one for the computer, a calendar that is separate from the computer that she can hang on her wall and that will remind her say an hour ahead of time of appointments she has by voice. Basically one that says, "you have an appointment in one hour". I don't know if anyone even makes such a thing, but I think it would be cool for her to have it since she has 4 kids and has a hard time remembering appointments. Maybe other people could use it too. 2 Comments »

Dell should offer a cheaper 14.1" notebook PC in the small business section

Sales Strategies, Small Business, Laptops submitted by winoffice Jul 24

Why is it that in the small business section the cheapest 13.3" notebook PC is $749 but the cheapest 14.1" is $779. That means that 14.1" is a more expensive screen size than 13.3"?? It should be the other way around! And $779 IS WAY TOO HIGH of a starting price for the 14.1" screen size in small business notebooks. I have seen other 14.1" notebooks for far less, for $499/$599 if not less.

Dell should offer a cheaper 14.1" notebook ($499/$599 instead of $779 base starting price) for the small business section. Oh, and it had better be a Vostro. 1 Comment »

Avoid FOXCONN motherboards in later models

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by tom66 Jul 27

Foxconn, a major manufacturer of motherboards, has switched to not support Linux by feeding it bogus data:

if(linux) send(*****)

This is entirely non-competitive only allowing Windows OSes. Some people like to install Linux on their DELLs and they are being deliberately censored.

Try to avoid Foxconn motherboards, or, if impossible, avoid the BIOS versions with this 'feature'. 13 Comments »

My "Personal" Trainer

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Healthcare, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mistasims Jul 28

I would love to help develop a device similar to the ipod or mp3 player that would allow you to upload your fitness profile(stats including age, height/weight, body fat, and circumference measurements) and download personalized workouts, tips, and video/audio training. memory card would allow for personal security and would be easily compatible with laptop and/or pc for printable results as well as allowing individual to monitor results at own leisure. 3 Comments »

Internal storage/ports

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by daewootech Jul 28

I think like a internal storage tray would be cool, like something to the sides of the touchpad that you could pop up and stuck things like money or a usb key other small items, also could be a nice hidden spot for internal connections like a micro usb reciever for the logitech mice or other small usb devices so you can have they plugged in all the time and not worry about breaking the usb port or key.
