Have a series of laptops geared towards students.

Laptops submitted by hollyberry 3 days ago

I think there should be a series of laptops geared towards students looking for a laptop with word processing and internet at a cheaper price. students don't need a fancy laptop with a fancy pricetag. they just need a basic, small laptop that is affordable to them. 4 Comments »

Media Direct 4 for everyone

Software submitted by mrzero Jul 15

Dell, it makes no sense not to allow users of Media Direct access to the new version (version 4). Version 4 (see http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=... for details).

Consider posting this as a download... 1 Comment »

"Advanced" mode option

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by playmariokong Jul 11

I realize that by offering limited choices at each step in the purchase process, you are helping those who are not familiar with building out a PC from scratch. However, for those of us who HAVE built a PC before and don't really want to have to do it ourselves, having more options is ideal and important.

What I propose is an "Advanced" option that presents a much larger number of options to the user. The average user has been trained to stay away from and not click anything that says "Advanced" thanks to Microsoft and other companies. This would allow you to offer additional options to more knowledgeable users. Comment »

Dell, please let ME create a desktop I would be proud to display. Give me a choice between a handful of chassis designs and colors for the front and side panels. 3 Comments »

Fast Computers

Operating Systems submitted by gamer128 Jul 6

On PCWorld and PCMag, they say that when Windows is loaded onto an Apple, Windows runs faster! That is a big shame to all Windows fans. I mean if Dell could make all their computers run as fast as possible, without their preloaded junk, which I'm pretty sure that's what makes it go slow, then consumers, especially gamers would start to consider Dell's computers 33 Comments »

a top-of-the-line tablet PC

Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 1

It seems that tablet PCs have gotten worse in the last 4 years; 4 years ago I got a 1400x1050 resolution 2GHz single-core tablet from an unnamed competitor. Such things are non-existent today.

I'm searching for these specs cannot find them anywhere (even in Dell's Latitude XT) and would be willing to pay almost twice the price of a regular computer to get them.

Use case:
* modern artist who might use software like Photoshop/CAD/whatever and needs speed, high resolution, and touch
* students who need a fast computer but also with touch (at the very least tablet) functionality for taking notes

absolutely necessary:
- fast CPU: >2GHz dual or quad core
- UXGA screen (1400x1050) absolute minimum, QXGA preferred
- multitouch touch screen with pen
- power cord which is guaranteed for 4+ years not to break, reasonably light too
- mouse buttons on top of trackpad... preferably options to have no trackpad but rather one of those rubbery sticks
- no number pad, since that forces one to type with one's hand twisted to the left
- full-size backspace key (which I assume is standard by now)
- not necessarily a top-of-the-line graphics card, but sufficient to for example run Compiz at a 1400x1050 or higher resolution or games from 2 years ago or so
- good speakers, unlikes some competitors

highly preferable:
- option not to install Windows in favor of installing Linux myself
- 5-year warranty, minimum 4-year
- long battery life, but not at the expense of safety (see recent explosive battery incidents) (4hr life at an absolute minimum)
- battery does not die after a year or two like some manufacturers out there; replacement battery is cheap
- S-VIdeo output
- high-res video camera with zoom (to do eye-tracking)
- [keyboard:] ctrl, fn, meta(win), and alt modifiers all to the left of the spacebar
- [keyboard:] tilde/backtick key not hidden away
- [keyboard:] menu-open key and del keys close to center of keyboard

doesn't matter:
- [keyboard:] very small space key on keyboard, split into two halves (so they can be rebound in function; see common Asian keyboards)... may want to do some usability testing on this
- weight doesn't matter
- cost doesn't matter within reason
- size doesn't matter within reason 3 Comments »

Scanner built to Notebook lid

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by class2008 05/19/07

I think Dell should build a scanner onto the lid of a notebook(s). If someone did not have a scanner with them, on the road for example, or wi-fi hotspot, and needed to scan something, they would have one on their notebook. A scanner does not consist of much, so it would not be hard, and they are not that thick. The largest capacity battery should be included with the notebook at purchase though. What does everyone else think? 15 Comments »

Make longer lasting batteries for better portability

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice 05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery.

Basic laptops: at least 2 1/2 hours battery life
Entertainment laptops: at least 3 1/2 hours battery life
XPS laptops: at least 4 1/2 hours battery life 31 Comments »

Dell E Slim with NON-glossy panel

Monitors and Displays submitted by happymaster23 Jun 15

I have falled in love to new Dell E lineup and Dell E Slim specially. This product looks superb, with no badness, but I found one - this is glossy panel. I hate glossy panels, so Dell please make customization selection between glossy or non-glossy.

Thank you 8 Comments »

Dell Home Server

Servers and Storage submitted by plafay Jun 16

Hello,

I would be very interesting of Dell based Microsoft Home Server.
To have the best usage per watt, cool features could be :
- Atom processoirs
- 2,5' HDD (up to 4)
- Close to 10w in idle
- No more than 30w in use
Of course, the price is important and it has to compete with the Nas systems.
For example, I'm ready to buy at $600 :
- Atom processor
- 1 Gb of Ram
- 2*320 Gb HDD 6 Comments »

Laptop Hard Drive slide out (removable) tray

Laptops submitted by toyota_supra Jun 15

I would really like to see some sort of a slide out tray with a hard drive. It would be so convenient to slide in a hard drive with different operating system (XP, Vista, Linux), without going through the hustle of multi boot, confusing partitioning and last but not least, in case of a hard drive failure (even on multi boot systems) there would a quick and easy way to get up and running on a previously set up operating system(s).

I know that some 17 inch laptops offer optional second hard drive, but this idea is for a removable HD on any size laptop.

Regards,
T.S. 4 Comments »

Touch screen on laptops, with Microsoft Origami

Laptops submitted by matts Jun 14

If the iPhone can have a touch screen, why not a laptop? :)

Seriously, a small (or large!) XPS laptop with a touch screen would open up a lot of possibilities. Microsoft just came out with a new version of its Origami interface, which Dell could customize very nicely: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsexperience/archive/2008/06/13/origam... 2 Comments »

Supply a 'free'good quality bag/sleeve with new Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by missdiva Jun 8

Dell should supply a FREE good quality bag and sleeve with all new Laptops, bearing in mind that customers have spent a considerable amount of money on their product.

Customers wouldn't then have to rush out to buy a bag/sleeve to protect their purchase. 9 Comments »

Hot-swappable laptop batteries.

Laptop Power submitted by jmxz May 31

I'd like to be able to swap the battery on my laptop without having to turn it off or hibernate it. It seems you could do this by putting a large capacitor or tiny internal battery that could provide power for the 30 seconds or so it takes to switch to a spare battery. Another way you might be able to do this is instead of having one big battery in each laptop, have 2 small ones instead; and you could swap them one at a time.

If it was really easy to swap them I'd probably buy more spare batteries; so I could go most of the day without plugging in the laptop (and then I'd want an external charger so I could charge them all overnight). 26 Comments »

Lower Prices of Batteries, especially Replacements

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by gear Apr 18

I realize there is a temporary battery shortage that is driving up prices and also the high cost associated with getting bad batteries that have to be recalled.

However, I know that there are many Li-Ion battery suppliers in China that are currently not qualified as Dell Suppliers and will need a certain amount of work to come up to your quality specs.

Why not begin a program to upgrade their capabilities leading to a more diversified source of batteries, and hopefully, lower prices?

In the mean time, I understand that there are shortages, but it is unconsciousable to raise your prices for replacement batteries to $300 for a 9 cell battery.

That is the level of robbery associated with Sony.

If there is a shortage, hold prices stable but impose rationing instead. 3 Comments »
